Liverpool eye up Federico Chiesa move

Liverpool are reportedly showing “strong interest” in signing Juventus and Italy star Federico Chiesa in the near future, but they face competition to sign him.

The Lowdown: Chiesa excelled at Euro 2020

There were a number of excellent performers at Euro 2020, but Chiesa was undoubtedly one of the attacking standouts, winning the tournament with Italy.

The 23-year-old ran England ragged at times in the final and ended up scoring twice overall during the competition, being hailed as “world-class” by former Azzurri defender Alessandro Pierini.

The Latest: Liverpool linked with Chiesa move

Liverpool could be looking for a new attacking signing soon, and according to Calciomercato, they are among several huge clubs who are keen on acquiring Chiesa’s signature.

Chelsea and Bayern Munich are also believed to be keen, with the winger scoring 15 goals in 47 appearances for Juventus. Indeed, the report claimed that the Blues had been ready to table an offer of roughly €100m (£85.6m) for the Euro 2020 winner over the summer.

The Verdict: Chiesa would be a sensational signing

Chiesa seems to be an exceptional prospect and he could be a perfect signing for Liverpool at a time when fresh blood is required in the attacking areas of Jurgen Klopp’s squad.

He is fearless on the ball, running at players with pace and energy, and with Sadio Mane still looking a shadow of his former self, the Italian gem could be viewed as an ideal long-term replacement for the 29-year-old at Anfield.

Cricinfo staff25-Mar-2009Multi Screen Media and World Sport Group have signed on as the official broadcast partners for the IPL. The nine-year deal, that runs through till 2017, is worth Rs 8,200 crore. The new agreement, which is more than double the earlier deal signed last year for 10 years with the same two parties, gives Multi Screen Media the exclusive audio visual rights (in India) to all the 59 matches of the second edition of the IPL.The development comes after the Bombay High Court had cleared the way for the BCCI to seek a new broadcast deal by rejecting a plea from Sony TV, which had challenged the Indian cricket board’s decision to terminate its five-year deal to televise the IPL. Talks had failed because MSM, which holds the IPL contract under the Sony umbrella, wanted a non-terminable contract, which the BCCI/IPL refused to provide.Lalit Modi, the IPL commissioner, was “absolutely delighted” with the new deal. “We have what we believe to be the best deal for the DLF Indian Premier League and Indian cricket fans alike,” Modi said. “I am certain that Multi Screen Media will pull out all the stops in ensuring that the best technology is utilized to deliver excellent content that is creative, innovative and enriching for the cricket fans in India and indeed across the globe.”The IPL’s relationship with Sony had turned rocky last month after the IPL lost out on a US$31.16 million deal because of a dispute between Sony and Big TV, a direct-to-home provider. Ties between the two dipped further after the subsequent resignation of Kunal Dasgupta, the then Sony CEO, who was known to be close to Modi. Sony is also understood to have been keen on re-negotiating the financial terms of its contract with the IPL and had concerns about the tournament’s revised dates and some of the venues that were being considered.Manjit Singh, the MSM CEO, said the deal helped reaffirm the broadcaster’s commitment to the Indian subcontinent and the global cricket fan alike. “We are absolutely delighted to bring the exciting IPL line-up of Indian and international cricketers to the millions of cricket fans globally,” he said. “At Multi Screen Media & World Sport Group we have done some pioneering work in showcasing cricket in an entertaining and informative way and we will continue to innovate and extend the excitement of cricket through the IPL. We look forward to a long and successful association with the IPL as the leagues global media rights partner.”Venu Nair, CEO, WSG said the objective was to place Indian cricket on the global sports calendar. “It’s a task, that we have managed with great distinction,” Nair said. “Today, fans across the world are looking forward to the start of season 2 of the IPL and we are happy to partner with Multi Screen Media to bring the league to a global audience.”With the tournament moving away from India, there is likely to be a significant international audience now. All matches will be telecast at 4 pm IST and at 8 pm IST in the evening to coincide with prime time for television audiences in India.

Romero must start for Spurs vs Chelsea

Tottenham Hotspur return to Premier League action this afternoon and they’ll be looking to bounce back after a week of disappointing results.

Nuno Santo’s side saw their unbeaten start to the 2021/22 campaign ended at the hands of Crystal Palace last weekend and then in mid-week, they had to come from behind to salvage a point against Rennes in the UEFA Europa Conference League.

The Portuguese head coach has had to deal with plenty of injury and team selection troubles for both matches but ahead of kick-off in today’s London derby against Chelsea, he has been given a timely boost.

He has been without the services of his three South Americans – Giovani Lo Celso, Davinson Sanchez and Cristian Romero – after spending the last ten days in Croatia in a bid to avoid the UK’s quarantine regulations following the international break.

The trio arrived back in the country on Saturday, just in time for this massive encounter.

Spurs are short on centre-backs heading into the match, so Nuno may well need to turn to the pair of them despite not training with their teammates for around three weeks.

Eric Dier is dealing with an injury problem, whilst Japhet Tanganga is suspended after being sent off at Selhurst Park. It leaves Nuno with the inexperienced Joe Rodon and the aforementioned duo.

And he should turn to Romero as he will certainly know about the threat on offer from the Blues.

Last season’s Serie A ‘Defender of the Year’ is yet to start a Premier League match since arriving on an initial loan from Atalanta in the summer but he has experience up against Romelu Lukaku, who has already bagged four goals in four games this season.

In two matches against the Belgian colossus last season, the 23-year-old managed to stop the former Inter Milan talisman from scoring, which is certainly a positive sign.

Romero led the league for interceptions (3.1) per game, so he certainly has an impressive ability to read the game and then act, so given Spurs’ recent defensive issues – conceding five in their last two matches – he should come straight into the starting XI.

Lauded as “phenomenal” by Italian football expert Conor Clancy to This is Futbol, the £31.5m-rated Argentinian colossus must be unleashed at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium today as he could be the man to help stop the free-scoring Belgian.

It could be a risky but game-changing call from Nuno.

Champions Trophy could be relocated – Richardson

Cricinfo staff02-Mar-2009Weather concerns could prompt the ICC to move the Champions Trophy away from Sri Lanka. The tournament, scheduled to be played in October, may be shifted to Australia, South Africa or the United Arab Emirates, according to the ICC’s general manager, Dave Richardson. The seventh Champions Trophy was due to be held in Pakistan last year, but was postponed due to security concerns. The eight-team tournament has since been shrouded in uncertainty, with questions raised as to whether it could be accommodated in an already crowded international schedule and doubts over the suitability of Sri Lanka as a venue. Some critics have called for the Champions Trophy to be scrapped entirely, arguing that it now trails the World Cup and World Twenty20 in terms of prestige and holds little appeal for competing teams.Speaking at a press conference in Lahore, Richardson admitted seasonal concerns – October is one of the wettest months in Colombo – had prompted the ICC to consider relocating the tournament to a drier venue. Richardson added that the 2009 Champions Trophy could be condensed to 12-days, and played in a region where two or more grounds are lin close proximity, thereby reducing travelling time between matches.”Some doubts have been raised as far as Sri Lanka is concerned mainly from the weather prospective,” Richardson said. “Questions have been raised whether it’s wise to hold a tournament where rain is often affecting in October.”If it’s not Sri Lanka, the board has decided that we want to hold the tournament over 12 days, which means that we have to have two venues in virtually the same city. Certainly there can’t be any question of international travel being involved. That itself narrows the options down considerably. Perhaps Perth, Johannesburg-Pretoria, Dubai-Abu Dhabi might be an option.”There are couple of options which need to be considered and (those venues) would be in frame when the decision is made.”

Everton transfer update on Rodriguez

Many Everton fans have been left raging as a transfer update emerged on James Rodriguez.

Writing in his latest piece for The Times, Paul Joyce has said that the Goodison Park faithful still hope that they can sell or loan out the former Real Madrid star to another club, with the Portuguese, Turkish and Russian transfer windows still being open.

Rodriguez managed to score six goals and make a further nine assists in 26 matches in total in all competitions across the 2020/21 season (Transfermarkt), and supporters of the Merseyside club were unable to see him in action, so they will be desperate to see him play in the flesh this campaign.

With the English window now shut, it would not really make sense to let him go and so it is not a surprise at all to see so many Toffees raging after hearing this update.

Journalist says Vinicius would be interesting signing for Wolves

The Express and Star reporter Luke Hatfield told The Transfer Tavern that Carlos Vinicius would be an interesting signing for Wolves.

The Brazilian striker spent last season on loan at Tottenham having been signed by Jose Mourinho, but managed just one Premier League goal, although he played just 303 minutes in the league.

But in the Europa League and domestic cups, Vinicius proved himself as a lethal goalscorer, netting nine goals in just 670 minutes outside of the Premier League, including one hat-trick and two braces.

However, with Heung-min Son and Harry Kane at the peak of their powers, Vinicius was an unused substitute on 17 times last season, which all but ended any chance of Tottenham activating his buy-out clause.

Just a matter of months down the line, however, according to the Mirror, Wolves, who’re short of options up front, could turn to the £16.2m-rated striker.

Vinicius scored 24 goals under the guidance of Wolves boss Bruno Lage when the pair were together at Benfica in 2019-2020.

“He would be an interesting player were Wolves to sign him,” Hatfield told The Transfer Tavern.

“He didn’t get a fair crack at the whip at Spurs, it was always going to be tough playing back-up to Harry Kane because he’s always going to want to play week in week out and you’ll only see limited opportunities.

“But he showed enough to attract interest of Premier League clubs, so he’d be an interesting signing for Wolves.”

Reviews can make 'mockery' of umpires' authority – Harmison

England fast bowler Steve Harmison feels the umpire review system still lacks consistency and clarity and fears it will only make a “mockery” of the on-field umpires

England fast bowler Steve Harmison feels the umpire review system still lacks consistency and clarity and fears it will only make a “mockery” of the on-field umpires. Harmison was reacting, in his column in the , to one such review that went against him during the first Test against West Indies in Jamaica, an lbw verdict against Ramnaresh Sarwan.Harmison and the on-field umpire Tony Hill felt Sarwan was trapped in front of the stumps but the batsman challenged Hill’s verdict. The third umpire, Daryl Harper, felt the ball may have missed the top of the stumps and Sarwan, then on 5, went on to score 107 and shared an important 202-run stand for the second wicket with Chris Gayle. What surprised Harmison, however, was what Harper communicated to Hill after studying replays, which seemed to suggest that Harper himself wasn’t entirely convinced that the ball was missing the stumps.”When I trapped Ramnaresh Sarwan back in the crease, I was convinced he was out,” Harmison wrote. “So was Hill, which was why he stuck up his finger.”When Hill, after consulting Daryl Harper, then reversed his original decision and gave Sarwan not out, I asked him why, and he said something like: ‘Daryl said he couldn’t be sure but it may have been going over the top.’ I said to Tony: ‘That’s not right. He’s got to have seen something that proved you were wrong.’ Then he said: ‘Yeah, I thought so as well.'”There doesn’t seem to be any consistency or clarity,” Harmison wrote. “That means umpires are in danger of being isolated on the field and terrified to make a decision.”And I have to say, such is my continuing confusion, that I fear the new system is in danger of making a mockery of the time-honoured authority of the officials on the field. “The review system was tried out in two earlier series, but the rule has been modified for the current four-Test series against West Indies, with the number of reviews per innings per team reduced from three to two.Harmison said the defeat, which culminated in England being bowled out for 51 and suffering an innings and 23-run defeat, was one of the worst in his career.”I have never felt worse in my cricketing career than I do now, apart from when we were beaten by Australia in Adelaide on the last Ashes tour after setting up a position from which we might have won.”Five years ago I produced my best ever bowling spell here, 7 for 12, as we routed West Indies for 47 to win the first Test and set up a series victory. Now I know what it is like to be on the other end – and it’s c**p.”

Sam Lee drops update on Dusan Vlahovic

Manchester City have been credited with an interest in Dusan Vlahovic recently, as Pep Guardiola’s side continue their search for a Sergio Aguero replacement.

What’s the word?

It was claimed that the Citizens could consider a move for the Fiorentina forward this summer as they continue to be frustrated in their pursuit of Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane.

However, the Athletic’s Manchester City correspondent Sam Lee has now dispelled any of those rumours, suggesting on Twitter that the Serbian is not a target for Guardiola’s side this summer.

Although he is obviously a world-class striker, it seems strange that City are so deadset on singing Kane this summer, especially considering Daniel Levy’s stance on his situation at the North London club, and Vlahovic could have been a superb alternative.

Would Vlahovic have been a good signing for Man City?

Fans might point to the 5-0 victory against Norwich City on Saturday afternoon and suggest that a striker maybe isn’t needed, but in reality, the Canaries were awful and if Guardiola’s side want to retain the title this season then they might just need a top-quality forward to lead the line.

Vlahovic’s performances in recent seasons suggest that he would score a lot of goals for City, whilst at 21-years-old, he has a huge amount of potential and time to adapt to the Premier League.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-manchester-city-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Read the latest Manchester City transfer rumours and news!”]

Last season saw the Serbian forward contribute 21 goals in 37 Seria A appearances for Fiorentina, averaging a solid 6.90 rating from WhoScored for his performances.

Serie A expert Conor Clancy was full of praise for the young striker when speaking to ThisisFutbol recently, saying:

“[He’s] Incredible, and it really caught me by surprise because I’d seen him play in the flesh a few times and he scored a great goal against Inter and there was a lot of hype in Florence about him. People were saying this guy’s the real deal and I just couldn’t see it.”

“He’s just a complete number nine and I know it’s just off the back of one season, but he’s strong, can link play up, can hold the ball up and most importantly, he’s scoring goals. He’s one of those players that when he looks confident, you almost expect him to score every time he plays.”

[freshpress-quiz id=“577936”]

Therefore, it seems as if Vlahovic would have been an excellent addition to Guardiola’s squad, and Man City fans will surely be gutted with this update from Sam Lee, especially if the Citizens fail in their attempts to bring Kane to the Etihad before the window shuts.

Court acts against Pawar and Manohar in perjury case

The Calcutta High Court has directed initiation of criminal proceedings against six BCCI officials

Cricinfo staff12-Nov-2008The Calcutta High Court has directed initiation of criminal proceedings against six BCCI officials, including the president, Shashank Manohar, and former president Sharad Pawar, for filing a false affidavit in a case of alleged perjury involving Jagmohan Dalmiya’s expulsion from the Indian board.Dalmiya, a former board president himself, filed a case of perjury against the officials in June 2007 – the others are Ratnakar Shetty (chief administrative officer), Niranjan Shah (former secretary), N Srinivasan (current secretary) and Chirayu Amin (vice-president) – for producing false documents in court relating to his expulsion in December 2006.The BCCI had filed an affidavit – signed by the six officials – in the Calcutta High Court stating that the rule under which Dalmiya had been expelled from the BCCI had been duly registered by the Registrar of Societies in Chennai. Dalmiya then filed a case against the six officials alleging that the documents were false and were produced with intent to mislead the court.Passing the order, Justice Nadira Patherya directed the Registrar (Original side) to initiate criminal proceedings under Section 195 of the Criminal Procedure Code (dealing with prosecution for contempt of lawful authority of public servants for offences against public justice and for offences relating to documents given in evidence), at an appropriate court. The officials involved refused to comment, saying their lawyers were handling the issue. “I don’t know what the exact decision is,” Pawar said. “I have just heard of the decision. Unless I see the papers, consult our lawyers, I will not be able to answer.”The court order is the latest twist in Dalmiya’s bitter and long-running rivalry with the current BCCI administration, against whom he has been fighting various legal battles since his expulsion in 2006. Apart from the perjury case, there is one being heard in a Mumbai metropolitan court relating to alleged embezzlement of funds during the 1996 World Cup. Those charges were levelled by the BCCI after Sharad Pawar took over as president in 2005. Dalmiya had used his casting vote to help his nominee, Ranbir Singh Mahendra, defeat Pawar in the BCCI presidential election in 2004 but Pawar won the next year.
