Blackburn: Alan Nixon makes Lenihan claim

Reputable journalist Alan Nixon has dropped a claim involving Blackburn Rovers defender Darragh Lenihan.

The lowdown: Lenihan at Blackburn

Signed from Belvedere FC in the Republic of Ireland in 2011, Lenihan has come through the youth ranks at Ewood Park and has amassed 252 senior appearances for the club.

Out of contract in the coming weeks (Transfermarkt), the 28-year-old has previously been linked with a sensational move to the Premier League, with as many as five clubs believed to be taking an interest in him.

As the end of the 2021/22 English campaign closes in, it appears that the Irishman’s future in Lancashire remains in serious doubt…

The latest: Nixon drops Lenihan transfer claim

Taking to Twitter in response to a Blackburn supporter questioning whether a new deal could be forthcoming for the twice-capped ace, Nixon was quick to suggest that prospective suitors could come again.

He succinctly stated that there is “a lot of interest in Lenihan …”.

The verdict: Huge loss

Already set to lose manager Tony Mowbray, the sight of club captain and talisman Lenihan also moving on to pastures new would be a significant blow to Blackburn supporters.

During the season, the ‘man mountain’ (as Mowbray called him following a resounding 4-0 victory over Birmingham) scored three times and provided one assist in 41 Championship outings.

Overall, the Dublin-born centre-back earned an impressive 7.11 Sofascore rating in the league, making 1.5 interceptions, completing 4.1 clearances and winning eight duels on average per game.

If the mooted interest turns into something more tangible and a player of such importance leaves Rovers for free, it would be an undoubted loss to the squad, and whoever replaces Mowbray in the Ewood Park hot seat may have a tough task finding a reliable replacement for Lenihan.

Aston Villa suffer injury setback

Aston Villa have suffered an injury setback heading into their final two Premier League matches of the season.

Defender Ezri Konsa was injured during a tussle with Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta during the 1-1 draw which impacts Villa’s chances of securing a top-half finish this season.

Steven Gerrard will be gutted and he spoke after the match about the injury: “We’re concerned about Ezri, normally, someone like him wouldn’t come off the pitch unless there was a problem,” said the Villa manager.

He added: “We’ll send him for an MRI scan, I’ll be extremely surprised if he plays again this season.”

Bad news for the club, who arguably need all their key players fit and firing to secure that top half finish the manager desperately wants.

Gerrard has played Konsa alongside Tyrone Mings at the heart of the Villa defence since arriving from Rangers in mid-November, however, it is no secret the manager is looking to add some defenders to the squad next season.

Konsa only has an average WhoScored rating of 6.43 this season, ranking him a lowly 18th in the Villa squad. Although he does win on average, two aerial duels per match, placing him fourth on the list whilst also completing 86.4% of his passes, ranking him at seventh.

With that in mind, losing him for the final few weeks of the campaign is likely to represent a significant blow to the manager.

After all, the ex Gers boss said of him earlier this season, saying: “He’s been outstanding for me, obviously the red card [against Leeds] was frustrating for him and us because he is an important players.”

Having been at the club since 2019, the 24-year-old has shown brief glimpses of his potential, although it looks like this may not be enough to convince Gerrard to stick with him next season with the player linked away. An exit, however, would be a surprise given the praise from the Liverpudlian previously.

Hopefully, the injury isn’t as bad as first feared and Konsa can have a solid pre-season ahead of what could be the side’s most important season in years.

Liverpool monitoring Hirving Lozano

Liverpool are interested in signing “entertaining” Napoli winger Hirving Lozano this summer amid reports that Napoli are winning to sell the player.

Reports from Italy (via El Futbolero) said the Reds are ‘monitoring’ the situation of the winger with a view to making a move for him ahead of next season.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-liverpool-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-salah-gnabry-isak-romano” title= “Read the latest Liverpool news!”]

Reports in La Gazzetta Dello Sport (via Get Italian Football News) also confirm that Lozano could be sold and that the Napoli president is willing to listen to offers for him. He is rated at £31.5m but is contracted at the club for another two seasons so might fetch a higher fee.

The 26-year-old joined the Italian side in 2019 from Dutch club PSV Eindhoven and has impressed greatly since. He’s made 113 appearances for the club in total and been directly involved in 39 goals.

He told Mexican TV last year that he would like to play for a club “stronger” than Napoli with it seeming as though he has ambitions to win more silverware. However, this season Napoli have been in a title race and currently sit third in Serie A just five points off the top of the table Milan.

Lozano has played a key part in that success, which is why he’s attracted admirers across Europe. With Napoli having now qualified for next season’s Champions League he could be tempted to stick with what he knows, but the prospect of moving to Liverpool would be hard to turn down.

One player he could turn out to be like is Luis Diaz. Similarly to Lozano, the Columbian was relatively unknown before his move to Liverpool but has since proven more than capable of stepping up to the plate. If Lozano moved to Anfield and was able to do the same, then he would be a great signing for Klopp.

If you compare both players, their statistics read pretty similarly, suggesting precisely why he’s been described as “unplayable” when playing for his country.

Lozano has a higher number of goal creating actions per 90 minutes at 0.65 compared to Diaz’s 0.34, which proves his creative ability. However, the Colombian has a higher number of goals per shot on target at 0.45 compared to 0.26.

Ultimately if Lozano signed he would only improve under a coach as good as Klopp, and his ability to create goals alongside Diaz who can score, could see a greater partnership form.

Joe Hart tipped to finish career at Celtic

Former Scotland manager Alex McLeish has tipped Celtic goalkeeper Joe Hart to finish his long and distinguished career at Parkhead.

The Lowdown: Hart excelling at Celtic

The 35-year-old joined the Hoops from Tottenham last summer, with Ange Postecoglou seeing him as someone who could aid their Scottish Premiership charge.

Hart has proven to be a superb signing to date, starting 32 league matches and playing a key role in his side topping the table late in the campaign.

The former England stopper’s current Celtic deal expires in the summer of 2024 and it looks likely that he will stay until at least that point.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/key-latest-celtic-updates-5/” title=”Key latest Celtic updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Latest: McLeish makes key claim

Speaking to Football Insider, reacting to news from a Celtic source that the Hoops are on the hunt for a new shot-stopper signing, McLeish claimed that Hart could now see out the rest of his career at Parkhead, given the manner in which he has slotted in there:

“I don’t think he needs the competition. It’s good for the club, of course, but the mentality of Joe Hart means he won’t be affected by someone coming in.

“He’ll be playing for Celtic until he decides to hang his boots up. It’s a big club. Not many come bigger in the world, and the challenge of playing for such a big club has revitalised him. They’ve helped him find his mojo again.

“He’s got a touch of the Allan McGregor genes about him, and I can see him seeing out his career in Scotland.”

The Verdict: Best for all parties

The idea of Hart remaining at Celtic until he calls it a day feels like a no-brainer for all parties, with the Englishman still a force between the sticks, having once been hailed as ‘one of the best goalkeepers in the world’ by legend Gianluigi Buffon.

At 35, he is still far from done as a ‘keeper and his influence for the Hoops can continue to shine through beyond this season, with Buffon himself still playing at the age of 44.

Hart seems to have found a great level of form and confidence again, having lost his way a little in the Premier League, and Postecoglou will be delighted with the impact he has made.

Newcastle: Mark Douglas drops big transfer claim

A big Newcastle United transfer claim has been made on their plans for the summer window…

What’s the talk?

Magpies journalist Mark Douglas has revealed the position that PIF are viewing as their biggest area of improvement ahead of the 2022/23 campaign.

He Tweeted: “It’s a striker nufc want this summer as a ‘priority’.”

This comes after the Saudi Arabian consortium splashed the cash in the January window to sign Chris Wood, Kieran Trippier, Dan Burn, Matt Targett and Bruno Guimaraes. They are now looking to take the next step and a new number nine is the player they want to bring in to do that.

Eddie Howe will be delighted

The Toon head coach will be delighted with the club prioritising a new number nine as his squad is currently lacking a reliable and consistent striker to find the back of the net in the Premier League.

Callum Wilson scored 12 goals in the 2020/21 campaign and this tally means that you can argue that he is a consistent goalscorer in the top-flight as he hit double figures for the club. However, he has not been reliable in terms of his availability for selection as he started 23 matches that season and has started just 14 times in the current term.

Taking Wilson out of the equation, Allan Saint-Maximin is the club’s top scorer with five goals in the Premier League this season. Meanwhile, Wood – who joined from Burnley for £25m – has only found the back of the net twice in 15 outings in the black and white shirt.

He has not been able to make an instant impact since joining from the Clarets and no one else has stepped up, consistently, to carry the burden in the final third.

The lack of goalscoring quality in the squad is evident and that is why the head coach will be delighted with the prospect of being given a new player to work with next term. Although, the club will need to ensure that they are able to get the right one in as Wood’s dismal record in front of goal proves that paying a big transfer fee does not guarantee anything.

Howe will be keen to assess the potential options that the club can target this summer with the aim of landing the new goalscoring machine for the Toon army to enjoy. As such, it will now be interesting to see who PIF attempt to bring in over the coming months…

Pundit discusses ‘big boost’ at Liverpool

Former England international Danny Mills says Jurgen Klopp’s new deal at Liverpool is a ‘big boost’ for everyone concerned at the club.

The Lowdown: Klopp signs new deal

Last week, Klopp signed a two-year extension at Anfield, meaning he will now remain as manager until the summer of 2026.

It was a significant moment in Liverpool’s recent future, with the German completely transforming Liverpool since taking charge back in October 2015.

Not only has he won the Champions League and Premier League, among other trophies, but he also has turned the Reds into arguably the world’s best club side, currently neck and neck with an incredible Manchester City squad to decide who deserves that title.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-liverpool-transfer-news-30/” title=”Latest Liverpool transfer news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=“none”]

The Latest: Mills reacts positively

Speaking to Football Insider, Mills, a BBC Radio 5 Live pundit, was unsurprisingly positive about the news, saying it should only improve the current feel-good mood at Anfield:

“The timing is probably aimed at giving the whole squad a big boost. I’m guessing these talks have been going on for four or five months. This is not something that comes about a few days before when they ask ‘Jurgen will you sign a new contract?’ And he says ‘Oh, go on then’ and it’s done and dusted.

“When you’ve got a little bit of speculation around other players’ contracts, Mane and Salah, to announce Klopp’s contract and to say ‘He’s the man’, it gives everyone a bit of comfort.

“For those players, they think ‘Oh he’s going to be here, we can plan’ and if they are not going to be there then there is still a plan and it settles down the fans.

“Why wouldn’t you sign him up? He’s an exceptional manager. But remember, managers can be sacked. It only takes two disastrous seasons and he will be out. Simple as that.

“I don’t envisage that happening in any way shape or form but it’s much easier to tie down a manager because you can always get rid of them with six months or a year’s pay-off.”

The Verdict: Best news of the season

For all the talk of Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane’s futures and potential new signings, Klopp staying on for a further two years is more important than anything else.

The 54-year-old holds the key to Liverpool’s success and he is already a truly legendary figure at the club, masterminding a glorious period in the Reds’ history and making legends out of his players.

In an ideal world, Klopp would stay on well beyond 2026 but to have him for an extra couple of years is huge in itself – the fact that rival clubs will likely be upset by the news sums up his brilliance.

“Similar” to Semenyo: Liverpool in daily talks to sign £88m Salah successor

Quite how it has all come to this continues to be debated, but the fact of the matter is that Mohamed Salah could be nearing the end of his glorious spell at Liverpool.

It was just over six months ago that the Egyptian sat atop his throne, Premier League champion for the second time at Anfield and fresh from signing a bumper new deal to end months of speculation.

The main man under Jurgen Klopp, the ex-Chelsea winger appeared to go to an even higher level following Arne Slot’s arrival, ending 2024/25 with a ridiculous tally of 57 goals and assists in all competitions.

Like all good things, however, an end is now in sight, with the 33-year-old’s AFCON involvement, alongside the looming January window, sparking suggestions that he could have already turned out in Red for the final time.

It would not be a fitting way to bow out, yet rarely do even the brightest and best get the send-off nor the finale they deserve. Even the great Steven Gerrard had to fly the nest for MLS to see out his playing days.

Regardless of whether a departure does occur in January or over the summer, Salah appears to have made his long-term future untenable – now to find a suitable replacement…

Latest on Liverpool's search to replace Salah

Rumours are already swirling regarding Salah’s potential next move, with reports last week suggesting that Turkish giants Galatasaray are among the clubs to have made an offer to the ageing sensation.

The Reds are unlikely to receive anywhere close to the reported £200m bid that was lodged from Saudi Arabia two years ago, although there would surely be a hope to cash in for as much as possible, in order to reinvest those funds on a replacement.

There have been continued claims that Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo has been earmarked as one of the more high-profile options to help fill the void, while TEAMtalk are reporting that FSG could also look to the Bundesliga to find their next Anfield star.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Indeed, as per the report, the Merseysiders are accelerating their interest in RB Leipzig teenager, Yan Diomande, having begun negotiations with the 19-year-old’s representatives.

While no bid has yet been placed for the £88m-rated wideman, the piece does note that Liverpool are engaged in almost ‘daily contact’ with his agent, ahead of making what would likely be a summer move.

That’s not to say that a January move is completely ruled out for the in-demand starlet – who is fielding interest from across Europe – with it yet to be seen whether the reigning Premier League champions will firm up their interest with a winter offer.

How Diomande compares to Semenyo & Salah

As stated above, a leading target to replace Salah is, of course, the aforementioned Semenyo, with the Ghanaian available for £65m due to the presence of a release clause in his Cherries contract.

Whether he would represent an alternative or a possible teammate for the 25-year-old remains to be seen, although Diomande is an equally as exciting talent who could reinvigorate Slot’s forward line.

Semenyo has been one of the Premier League’s leading figures this season with nine goals and assists to date, although Diomande has dazzled during his breakthrough year in the Bundesliga, chipping in with eight goal involvements himself for Leipzig.

That includes a stunning hat-trick during the weekend win over Eintracht Frankfurt, a performance that only served to reinforce just why the promising Ivorian is being watched so closely.

Fleet of foot and with pace to burn, the comparisons to Semenyo are also there to see, with The Athletic’s Seb Stafford-Bloor noting that Diomande is “physically similar” to the Bournemouth star, “but with all the same skill and touch”.

The respected Bundesliga insider, writing on X back in November, did hint that the teen is “not ready yet” for a Premier League move, although Liverpool would be wise to get ahead in the race for his signature, even if it means waiting to strike next summer.

That said, there’s no reason why he couldn’t come in and hit the ground running in January, if a deal were to be struck, with the youngster currently comparing favourably to his fellow wingers across Europe’s top five leagues.

As per FBref, he ranks in the top 1% for successful take-ons per 90, while also ranking in the top 2% for progressive carries per 90, highlighting just what an elite dribbler and ball-carrier he is.

Semenyo’s own quality in that regard was evident on the opening day, as he ran the length of Anfield unopposed, before coolly converting in that mad-cap 4-2 win for Slot’s side.

The prospect of potentially adding both the ex-Bristol City man and Diomande into the fold in 2026 would be a truly exciting one, with two Semenyo-esque figures perhaps what is needed to provide an upgrade on the flanks.

McCoist left stunned by "incredible" Martin decision after Rangers defeat

The pressure is continuing to mount on Rangers manager Russell Martin, with Gers legend Ally McCoist now describing one situation as “incredible”.

New update on Martin's Rangers future

It was another terrible day at the office for Rangers on Saturday afternoon, with Hearts winning 2-0 at Ibrox thanks to Lawrence Shankland’s double.

For Martin, it was potentially another nail in the coffin, with the 39-year-old making an extremely disappointing start to life in charge of the Gers, not yet winning a game in the Scottish Premiership this season.

That said, fresh reports suggest that the Englishman has been given a vote of confidence by the owners for the time being, with The Daily Record claiming that 49ers Enterprises have “decided to stick” with him.

It is clear that huge improvements are required at Rangers, in terms of results, performances and also Martin’s relationship with certain players.

McCoist fumes at "incredible" Martin decision

Speaking live on talkSPORT on Monday [via Rangers Review], McCoist bemoaned the Nicolas Raskin situation at Rangers, with Martin’s continuing to freeze the key midfielder out of the squad.

“Now, there’s obviously a problem with Raskin. There’s no doubt about that, something has happened. But from where I’m sitting, you cannot bite your nose off to spite your face. If you’ve got a problem with Raskin – and he [Russell Martin] clearly has – I think he’s got to let the public know what that problem is.

Ally McCoist on TNT Sports

“Because we’re all sitting there watching that game at the weekend, and Raskin would walk into that team. He scored for Belgium during the week in an international. There’s nobody on the planet going to tell me that Raskin should not be in the Rangers starting 11.

“Why is he not in the starting 11? There has to be an incredible reason for it, because you can’t leave him out if it’s to the detriment of the team. The team is the most important thing, not an individual problem between a manager and a player.”

This is a saga that desperately needs sorting, with Martin’s stubbornness in not playing Raskin now arguably backfiring, with the manager needing to bite the bullet and bring him back in.

It feels as though Martin is right on the edge at Ibrox, so frankly, he may as well make a change and play an important player, in order to potentially help save his job.

Rangers can forget Dyche & Gerrard by hiring"outstanding" Martin upgrade

With Russell Martin on the brink of being sacked by Rangers, the 49ers should appoint an “outstanding” candidate, not Sean Dyche or Steven Gerrard.

Sep 15, 2025

It remains to be seen if he is willing to do so, however, and if his decision has been made with Raskin, nothing will change unless he is dismissed, or until the midfielder possibly leaves in January.

Cobham talent left Chelsea for just £170k, now he's worth more than Isak

The fans might not have got everything they wanted, but it was a pretty good summer transfer window for Chelsea this year.

The club were able to ship out several players they deemed no longer good enough, and bring in a host of brilliant young talents who could develop into superstars for Enzo Maresca.

However, unlike some of their Premier League rivals, there was no blockbuster move for a certifiable world-class player, like Alexander Isak.

The Swedish international’s £125m move to Liverpool is now the league’s record transfer, although, painfully, Chelsea did lose a young talent in the past who is now worth more than that.

The best Ex-Chelsea gems

Over the last five years or so, Chelsea have seen a pretty constant stream of academy products come through and make it into the first team.

Where Are They Now

Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast’s Where Are They Now series.

However, like every other team, they’ve also lost out on some serious stars when they were young, with Declan Rice being a big one.

The Arsenal star came up through Cobham alongside Mason Mount and a number of other notable players, but at the age of 14 was let go.

He then moved to West Ham United, where he made 245 appearances and won the Conference League before joining the Gunners for £105m in the summer of 2023 and becoming a key cog in Mikel Arteta’s midfield.

Another youngster the Blues missed out on was Michael Olise, who left the club at the age of 14 and has gone on to become one of the best wingers in world football.

The Frenchman earned a £50m move to Bayern Munich last summer after impressing at Crystal Palace and more than justified his price tag.

In 55 appearances, he scored 20 goals and provided 23 assists, which comes out to a sensational average of a goal involvement every 1.27 games.

In all, Chelsea have missed out on some unreal talents of the years, although perhaps the worst is someone now worth more than Isak.

The ex-Chelsea gem worth more than Isak

Unfortunately for Chelsea, there are plenty more stars they let slip through their fingers, but in this case, the player worth more than Isak is Jamal Musiala.

Yes, the German international was once a part of the Blues’ academy, but in the summer of 2019, he opted to join Bayern, for which the club received just £170k.

It was seen as such a disaster by some that Massimo Franchi, the creator of the Golden Boy award, compared it to “the Louvre losing the Mona Lisa!”

Dramatic? Slightly, but the mercurial midfielder has been exceptional in the years since, and according to the CIES Football Observatory, is worth up to 151m.

That converts to around £131m, or £6m more than Isak’s record-breaking move, and while that sounds absurd, his performances suggest otherwise.

For example, despite still being just 22-years-old, the “world-class” superstar, as dubbed by former manager Julian Nagelsmann, has racked up 207 appearances for Bayern, totalling 12163 minutes, in which he’s scored 64 goals and provided 39 assists.

That comes out to a brilliant average of a goal involvement every other game, or every 118.08 minutes.

On top of that, he has already won 40 senior caps for Germany, in which he’s scored eight goals and provided eight assists.

Ultimately, Musiala is an exceptional world-beating talent, and Chelsea must rue the fact that they weren’t able to keep hold of him.

He's a dream for Amad: Man Utd to bid for "one of the best CFs in Europe"

It’s no secret that Manchester United have fallen way below the high standards they’ve set for themselves this season, currently occupying a place in the bottom half of the Premier League.

The Red Devils are set for their lowest ever points tally and league finish of the Premier League era, with boss Ruben Amorim desperately needing to make changes next year if he’s to be a success at Old Trafford.

The forward line has certainly contributed to their recent failures, netting just 42 goals in their 36 outings, with Bruno Fernandes their current top scorer on just eight goals.

Strikers Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee have only managed to find the back of the net seven times between them, highlighting the lack of attacking threat within the current squad.

However, the upcoming transfer window hands boss Amorim the perfect opportunity to improve the situation, with a new talisman needing to be at the top of his list this summer.

United’s hunt for a new striker this summer

With the transfer window rapidly on the horizon, United have already wasted no time in pursuing potential targets to strengthen the options at the manager’s disposal.

The likes of Liam Delap, Matheus Cunha and Victor Osimhen have all been touted with a summer switch to Old Trafford, but no deals have yet been completed for any of the aforementioned trio.

However, another name has entered the frame in the form of Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyokeres, with a potential reunion on the cards with Amorim, according to CaughtOffside.

The report claims that the Red Devils are preparing an offer for the 26-year-old Swedish international, who’s managed to register a staggering 52 goals in his 50 appearances throughout 2024/25.

It also confirms that Arsenal and Liverpool are in the race for his signature this window, with the hierarchy needing to work tirelessly to avoid missing out on him to a divisional rival.

Why United’s latest target would be perfect alongside Amad

The Europa League final next week hands United a golden opportunity to end the season on a high, whilst also securing their place in the Champions League for 2025/26.

Manchester United manager RubenAmorimarrives before the match

Amorim’s side must be fully focused on such an occasion, especially considering there is no longer anything to play for in the Premier League.

If they are to go beat Tottenham Hotspur for the first time this season and claim European glory, Amad Diallo will be a key reason, with his success this campaign nothing short of remarkable.

He’s registered 18 combined goals and assists across all competitions despite missing a large chunk of the year through an ankle issue, which required surgery.

However, he’s back and ready for action, with a fully fit 22-year-old a prospect to fear for any opposition, as seen by his contributions throughout 2024/25.

Such figures could fall perfectly into the hands of Gyokeres should he make the switch to Old Trafford, with his goalscoring tally undoubtedly improving the situation Amorim has on his hands.

The Swede, who’s been labelled “one of the best strikers in Europe” by Fabrizio Romano, has also managed to register 4.4 shots per 90, with 2.5 of which going on target – showcasing his clinical nature in the final third.

He’s also created 2.1 chances per 90 to date, along with a 52% aerial success rate, handing the side an all-round option at the top end of the pitch, which could allow Amad to increase his own tallies.

It’s unclear how much the Red Devils are set to bid for his services this summer, but it would be a phenomenal piece of business that would see the talisman link up with his former boss.

Given the interest elsewhere, the hierarchy will have to jump ahead of the opposition and make him their number one target, with Gyokeres having the tools to thrive in the Premier League and take the club back to where they belong.
