De Villiers best current batsman – Kohli

Virat Kohli has acknowledged AB de Villiers as the best current batsman, and lauded his composure under pressure after the South African’s 47-ball 79 helped Royal Challengers Bangalore qualify for their first IPL final since 2011. Royal Challengers had slumped to 68 for 6 in their chase of 159 against Gujarat Lions in the first Qualifier before de Villiers shared an unbroken 91-run stand with Iqbal Abdulla to carry his side home with 10 balls to spare.”Unbelievable, can’t believe I’m the winning captain,” Kohli said at the post-match presentation. “That should end a lot of debates as to who is the best going around. No question about it.”Come the big game, the big man stands up. I just bow down to him, that was probably one of the best knocks under pressure I’ve seen. So composed, taking Iqbal Abdulla along. He was really motivated to do it for the team. I’m really happy for him, I’m really happy for the whole team. Special credit to Iqbal as well, the way he got stuck with AB, that crucial partnership. That was wonderful composure to see from a young guy.”After having lost five of their first seven games, Royal Challengers were languishing in the bottom half of the table before winning six of their final seven matches, including a knockout game against Delhi Daredevils, to finish second in the league stage.”We have been playing good cricket coming into the playoffs, the guys wanted the opportunity,” Kohli said. “We’ve been speaking of guys wanting to step up every game. The top order didn’t do well. But AB, the class batsman that he is, I could see the opposition was worried about him, they wanted him out pretty badly because they know what he can do.”The first Qualifier was played on an atypical Bangalore pitch with the ball holding up in the surface and assisting the spinners. Kohli said a thin drizzle during the chase also helped Royal Challengers.”It did play a bit slow in the first half of the first innings. Second half it settled nicely. I wasn’t too unhappy about the few showers in between, it settled the wicket. The ball didn’t turn so much, it didn’t stop in the end. But high pressure game it doesn’t matter, you could be playing on a cement wicket. You need composure and that’s what AB de Villiers is.”

"Amazing" £70m Ace Wants Liverpool Transfer Amid Agent Talks

Brighton midfielder Alexis Mac Allister is reportedly "very keen" on a move to Liverpool this summer.

Injuries have wreaked havoc at the AXA Training Centre this season but a lack of investment into an ageing midfield is what has held Liverpool back the most.

With the transfer window beckoning, FSG have the chance to give Jurgen Klopp the tools he needs to bounce back immediately.

How advanced is Liverpool's move for Alexis Mac Allister?

According to Football Insider, Mac Allister "is very keen" on a switch to Anfield as Liverpool target a big-money move for the Argentine. Sky Sports reports that Brighton want around £70m for Mac Allister, although it remains to be seen how negotiations impact that figure.

Liverpool and Mac Allister's entourage are in "ongoing dialogue" as details are ironed out. Talks will continue next week with Jurgen Klopp wanting the player signed in time for the start of pre-season.

Klopp considers the 24-year-old playmaker as an "amazing" player and someone that can walk into the Liverpool starting XI. That's no surprise given the limited quality in the Merseysiders' engine room.

With Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and James Milner all set to leave the club upon the expiry of their contracts, Mac Allister has a crucial role to play in Liverpool's midfield rebuild.

What would Mac Allister add to Liverpool's midfield?

Goals, assists and badly needed technical excellence.

This season, Mac Allister has more goals and assists than all of Liverpool's midfielders combined.

It's not particularly difficult given the complete lack of attacking instinct in central areas but to say the Argentine walks into Klopp's team is a bit obvious. Not only is he an immediate starter but he provides so many top qualities that Klopp can make the most of.

His instinct for playmaking is exciting as Liverpool have been pretty dismal in central areas of the final third since Philippe Coutinho left. There has been an over reliance on Trent Alexander-Arnold for creativity which would be lessened with the arrival of Mac Allister.

If Liverpool want to win the Premier League again, they need Mac Allister but they cannot afford to stop there. Owners FSG need to invest heavily after years of overly cautious spending.

Everton Could Sell "Superb" Star For £50m This Summer

Everton would be willing to sell Amadou Onana for £50m this summer if they are relegated from the Premier League, according to a report from Football Insider.

Which Everton players could leave this summer?

There are a number of first-team players with their contracts set to expire at the end of the season, including Yerry Mina and Abdoulaye Doucoure, although Everton do retain the right to extend the latter player's deal by an additional year.

Not only that, but several players have been linked with a move away from Goodison Park, including Dominic Calvert-Lewin, and Arsenal have "looked at" signing the striker, according to journalist Dean Jones.

Despite signing a new deal earlier this season, Jordan Pickford continues to be targeted by a number of Premier League clubs, including Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United, with it being reported the goalkeeper can leave if the Toffees are relegated.

Another player Everton may be forced to cash-in on if they are relegated from the top flight is Onana, with Football Insider now reporting they would be willing to accept a £50m bid if they go down to the Championship.

After an impressive debut season at Goodison Park, the midfielder has drawn attention from a number of top clubs, including Man United, with Erik ten Hag said to be a huge admirer.

If the Merseyside club are relegated, the Belgian will push for a move this summer, however if they are able to survive the drop, the club's hierarchy will attempt to convince him to stay.

Should Everton sell Amadou Onana?

If the unthinkable happens and Everton do get relegated to the second tier, then they will most likely have to sell the 21-year-old, as there is no way a player with his quality would be willing to play in the Championship.

Hailed as "superb" by journalist Richard Buxton earlier this season, the maestro has been a vital player for Sean Dyche's side this season, making 31 appearances in the Premier League, during which time he has displayed his various qualities.

Everton midfielder Amadou Onana.

The Dakar-born midfielder is very strong in the air, while also ranking highly for tackles completed per game in the league, averaging 2.2, the fourth-highest amount in the Everton squad.

Dyche's side have shown real signs of improvement in recent weeks, particularly in the 5-1 win away down at Brighton, so they will be hoping they can beat the drop, and keep hold of Onana.

Amir and Yasir rested for Sussex match

Mohammad Amir and Yasir Shah have been rested for Pakistan’s second warm-up match against Sussex ahead of the opening Test against England at Lord’s

ESPNcricinfo staff07-Jul-2016Mohammad Amir and legspinner Yasir Shah have been rested for Pakistan’s second warm-up match against Sussex ahead of the opening Test against England at Lord’s.Both bowlers impressed against Somerset at Taunton, Amir taking 3 for 36 in the first innings with some dangerous swing at good pace while Yasir enjoyed a lengthy bowl in the second innings as he finished with 4 for 107.Rahat Ali has also been left out as Pakistan bring in Wahab Riaz, Imran Khan and Zulfiqar Babar. The batting, though, remains unchanged which, barring injuries, confirms the top-order line-up for the opening Test. Most of the batsmen spent decent time in the middle against Somerset, although Mohammad Hafeez (20 and 10), captain Misbah-ul-Haq (0 and 19) and wicketkeeper Sarfraz Ahmed will hope for a more productive outing at Hove.”We had a pretty decent outing against Somerset. I would expect everyone shall maintain and improve on standards on display at Taunton in batting, bowling and fielding,” Mickey Arthur, the head coach, said. “We have to keep up with the benchmarks we have achieved so far, with the same intensity. Slacking off at any point would not be acceptable”.

Newcastle Linked With Move For £94k-A-Week Champion

Newcastle United are interested in signing Atletico Madrid midfielder Rodrigo De Paul this summer, according to a new transfer report.

Is De Paul having a good season?

The 28-year-old has enjoyed a memorable season, although it is for his international achievements that he has been most famed for. He played a massive role in Argentina tasting World Cup glory late last year, proving to be an influential box-to-box presence throughout the tournament.

De Paul started all seven of his country's matches on their way to glory, providing legs and fight in the middle of the park, and almost acting as a perfect foil for superstar teammate Lionel Messi. The £94,000-a-week ace has also scored twice and registered five assists in La Liga for Atletico this season, however, showing that has been effective at club level, too.

His current deal doesn't expire until the summer of 2026, but it could be that he leaves in the upcoming transfer window, having not always been a regular starter for Atletico this season, starting just 20 league games.

Could Newcastle sign De Paul this summer?

According to a report from Spain [via Caught Offside], Newcastle are eyeing up a move for De Paul once the current campaign reaches its conclusion. The Magpies are thought to be willing to pay €40m (£35m) for his signature, making him a key part of their midfield in the process.

This could be a fantastic signing for Newcastle ahead of next season, with De Paul someone who shone so much at the World Cup, averaging 1.6 tackles and one key pass per game. He could be a brilliant midfield partner for Bruno Guimaraes at St James' Park, complimenting the Brazilian's more attack-minded, aesthetically-pleasing style and giving Eddie Howe's side even more meanness alongside Joelinton.

At 28, De Paul now has a wealth of experience, having won 53 caps for Argentina and made 273 appearances in Serie A and La Liga combined, but he is also still young enough to potentially be at his best for another four or five more years. He has been described as a "great player" by former player Ricardo Giusti and he is someone who has all the attributes to help take Newcastle to that next step.

It goes without saying that a top-four finish is vital if the Magpies want to sign him, however, with the Atletico man surely wanting Champions League football if he leaves his current club.

Hales development 'really pleasing' – Cook

Alastair Cook had praise for opening partner Alex Hales, as well as Chris Woakes and Jonny Bairstow after England completed a 2-0 Test series win over Sri Lanka

George Dobell at Lord's13-Jun-2016He has kissed a few frogs in recent times, but perhaps, at last, Alastair Cook has found his prince.Alex Hales was the eighth opening partner Cook has had since the retirement of Andrew Strauss and, although one or two flattered briefly, perhaps only Nick Compton in New Zealand in early 2013 has produced as consistent a series as Hales did against Sri Lanka. It wasn’t just the three scores in excess of 80. It was that Hales showed he had learned from his mistakes in South Africa. Gone were the tentative prods outside off stump; gone was the uncertainty over which balls to play and which to leave. He increased his average of 17.00 in South Africa by more than 40 in this series and showed, in the final innings at Lord’s, that he had also learned from his mistakes in over-attacking against spin.Cook on…

Nick Compton: “He’s shown glimpses. He is as frustrated as anyone. He’s got to go away now and score big runs in county cricket. Obviously, there will be a decision to be made on him. He knows that.”
Pakistan: “They’ve got a very good pace attack, backed up with spinners. But we’re ready for them. We scored a lot of runs against Australia’s attack here last year. I think it’s going to be a brilliant series.”

It would be premature to state that Hales has cemented his position, but he has earned the right to an extended trial covering the rest of the summer. And, if we mitigate against the failings of the Sri Lanka top order in the acceptance that batting in early season England is not easy, it seems only fair to praise Hales for succeeding in those same conditions. It is true that tougher challenges await but he will face them now secure in the knowledge that his judgement around off stump is such that he can see off the new ball. He is learning that he has the time, in Test cricket, to withstand periods when the bowler is on top and gradually build an innings.Under that amiable exterior there is impressive steel in Hales. It took a certain amount of courage and self-awareness to ask for an extra couple of County Championship games off after he returned from a winter with the England squads. Whereas other men on the fringe of the side might have felt the need to jump at the chance to be seen to do the right thing, Hales reasoned that he would benefit more from a refreshed mind than another couple of weeks of cricket. So, having taken some time off, he returned to the nets at Trent Bridge to work – often with Peter Moores – on improving an off-stump technique that was exposed by South Africa. Crucially, he started to stand straighter at the crease, which brought his head back in line with his body and gave him more certainty about the position of his off stump. In South Africa he had crouched to such an extent that his head had started to fall several inches outside off stump and saw him defending balls that he could have left with ease. And, while he had been billed as something of a dasher ahead of the South Africa series, he has also had the courage to play the game at his own pace. He is not, at first-class level, anything like the David Warner figure some had suggested. Instead, he had the strength to play as an accumulator. It may not be exactly what some aspects of the media wanted, but it gives him the best chance of succeeding at this level.Hales’ development was, in Cook’s view, the major plus England could take from the series victory. While Nick Compton’s Test career faded to a conclusion and James Vince made an uncertain start, Hales at least answered one of the questions facing England a few weeks ago: they know their opening pair for the series against Pakistan now.”Three scores of 80 and above from Alex Hales was really pleasing,” Cook said. “He’s certainly tightened up his game from South Africa and probably just learned about Test cricket.”It’s great when you see someone who maybe doesn’t quite nail it in the first four games but then goes away and shoes the hunger to work on his game away from the spotlight.”Alex Hales made three 50-plus scores the series•AFP

England have various options as they consider the No. 3 position for the Pakistan series. They could pick a specialist opener – Sam Robson would appear to be the strongest candidate at present – and move Hales to No.3, but that would appear an unusual response to his recent form. Or they could push Ben Stokes, one of the best players of pace in England, up to No. 3 on the basis that he tends to react well to responsibility.Realistically, though, it seems Scott Borthwick will benefit from Gary Ballance or Ian Bell failing to amass enough runs to nudge the selectors and win a chance at No. 3. His legspin bowling will do him no harm in selection debates, either. There is a danger that James Anderson’s excellence in such conditions could be taken for granted, so it is worth remembering that he came into the series with one or two questions to answer over his long-term future. He endured a tough trip to South Africa, claiming seven wickets at 43.00 apiece, and was keen to prove that all the miles in his legs were not beginning to show.He will rarely have conditions more in his favour than he did at Headingley, but he exploited them with surgical precision and showed in the second innings at Chester-le-Street that, even on slow, flat surfaces, he retains the skill and control to threaten. In finishing with the best bowling average of an England bowler with more than 20 wickets in a three-Test series since Derek Underwood in 1969, this was a reassuring return from Anderson.Cook also celebrated the advances made by Chris Woakes in the last couple of Tests. Not only was he the quickest member of the attack, but he showed impressive control and demonstrated that his batting can be a force at Test level. He may not have done enough to force himself into England’s first-choice side – Mark Wood and Stokes join Steven Finn in fighting for a similar position – but he did prove he deserved to be considered among the pack of seamers England will require to see them through their arduous schedule. He seems likely to play the first Test of the Pakistan series, at least, ahead of Stokes’ return for the second or third match.”Chris Woakes has really impressed me,” Cook said. “He is a different cricketer to Ben Stokes, not as dynamic, but he is still very effective. I said before Durham we hadn’t seen the best of Chris Woakes in an England shirt, but I thought he made really big strides in this series and proved to himself he can do it.”Jonny Bairstow was named Man of the Series for his exploits with the bat. He thumped two centuries that not only helped the side rebuild from top-order wobbles, but snatched the first and third Tests away from Sri Lanka within a couple of hours. So impressed was Cook with Bairstow that he compared him to “Matt Prior at his best”.”It’s a brilliant achievement,” Cook said. “And it’s great to have an attacking batsman coming in and taking it to the opposition.  He’s been very similar to Matt Prior when he was at his best. We could often be 100 for five and he’d change the momentum. It’s great to see someone who works so hard at his game getting his rewards.”Progress was not smooth, though. Cook admitted that England had found themselves three or four wickets down for few runs “more often than we would have liked” and he admitted that Bairstow’s role as keeper remained a discussion point after seeing a couple of relatively straightforward chances go down.”He knows how hard he has to work at his keeping,” Cook said. “That is a conversation we do have. He knows a couple of chances have gone down, but you don’t become a world-class wicketkeeper overnight. He’s made big strides since that South Africa series and is certainly heading in the right direction. But yes, there is always the thought that he could play as a specialist batsman with a guy who scores as many runs as he can.”It might be forgotten amid the one-sided results in the first two games, but the last time Sri Lanka visited England they won the Test series. For that reason alone, England have cause to celebrate this victory. Yes, conditions were stacked in their favour and, yes, this is a Sri Lanka side in a transitional phase. But England are not so strong, or so successful, that they can take anything for granted. It is only 13 months since they were held to a draw in the Caribbean. They remain the fourth-ranked team in the ICC’s Test table. But when you add the emergence of Hales, the development of Woakes and the dominance of Bairstow, they have made some tangible progress in this series. Progress is fitful and holes remain, but they are heading in the right direction.

Incoming coach should understand our culture – Dhoni

MS Dhoni has said the incoming coach of the Indian team needs to understand the players’ cultures and backgrounds to establish a good working relationship. Dhoni felt language wasn’t a barrier when he was asked if an Indian coach was desirable to ease bottlenecks in communication. One of the stipulations stated by the BCCI in its recruitment process for India’s head coach states: “It is desirable to communicate in Hindi and other regional Indian languages.””If you see the kind of players coming in, English, I don’t think, is a big barrier,” Dhoni said. “The other players in the team take the initiative, too. If someone doesn’t understand something, they ask ‘What does this mean?’ I feel it [knowledge of Hindi] can be [one of the] criteria, but it can’t be the only criteria.”More than Hindi, English, one who understands our culture and our upbringing, the one who understands these sort of things, he will always be better with us. In the past, too, these things have been important, and the coaches who have understood us better, it has made a difference at the ground level.”Dhoni said appointing the right candidate also depended on the options available, considering India’s hectic calendar. Former cricketers like Stephen Fleming and Ricky Ponting, who have coached IPL franchises successfully, have shied away from international assignments because of the amount of time they are required to spend away from home.”What is important is from a team’s requirement, what it needs. According to that, we have to select whoever is the best available,” Dhoni said. “It’s not like everyone wants to be the coach [and] there’s a reason behind it – you have your own family. It’s not like we are playing for six months and not playing for two months. We keep playing.”[For a] lot of international coaches, the problem is that we play a lot of cricket. From an availability point of view, we will have to see what is the best option and best for the team. One of the most important things is that they understand our culture.”The BCCI began the search for a head coach after the contracts of India team director Ravi Shastri, batting coach Sanjay Bangar, bowling coach B Arun and fielding coach R Sridhar – who were with the team since the ODI series in England in 2014 – expired after the World T20 in March. Bangar, however, was appointed coach for India’s tour of Zimbabwe, and Abhay Sharma, who most recently worked with the India Under-19s and A teams, was named fielding coach for the tour. The board has set June 10 as the deadline for candidates to apply for the role of India’s head coach, with the aim of appointing new long-term coaches by the time Virat Kohli’s team reaches the Caribbean for a four-Test series against West Indies, scheduled in July-August.

Liverpool Close To Completing £50 Midfield Signing

Liverpool's pursuit of Alexis Mac Allister is advancing as Jurgen Klopp edges closer to ending his midfield nightmare.

Are Liverpool close to signing Alexis Mac Allister?

According to TyC Sports, who cite Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool are "increasingly closer" to finalising a move for Mac Allister.

The Argentine World Cup champion has been identified by Klopp and his data analysts as the ideal player to start his midfield rebuild.

Talks are underway over a contract that will run until 2028 if all goes to plan for Liverpool.

The plan is to wrap up negotiations and sign all paperwork with the view to completing the deal by "the formal start of the transfer market in mid-June."

Brighton are said to be understanding of Mac Allister's ambition and will "not put up much resistance". The player could cost as little as £50m.

In December, Brighton boss Roberto de Zerbi said Mac Allister is a "big, big player" and his performance against Manchester United was nothing short of classy.

Does Mac Allister make up for missing out on Jude Bellingham?

If Liverpool were to only sign Mac Allister, it would still improve the current options available to Jurgen Klopp but it would not be enough.

Brighton & Hove Albion's Alexis Mac Allister celebrates scoring their first goal

Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and James Milner will all leave this summer which should mean Liverpool sign three midfielders. That might not turn out to be the case but anything less than three new midfield signings could place Klopp in a similar predicament to the one he has face this season.

While FSG have neglected midfield signings in recent summer transfer windows, the main issue at hand is ageing personnel in the engine room.

Jordan Henderson, Fabinho and Thiago Alcantara are perhaps all older than Klopp would like.

Adding Mac Allister to the engine room is a fantastic signing but for Liverpool to bounce back immediately, he cannot be the only midfielder to move to Anfield in the summer.

If the report is accurate and the 24-year-old will only cost Liverpool £50m, the Reds will have enough money to work with to further invest into the engine room.

Fabrizio Romano has also reported that Mason Mount remains a priority in the summer alongside Mac Allister. If true, that would represent an exciting new look in midfield.

The most jarring aspect of Liverpool's midfield demise is that it appears as though they struggle in a technical aspect when more talented Premier League sides take the game to them.

With the technical expertise of Mount and Mac Allister, Liverpool fans could again see their side challenge for top honours next season.

Celtic: 26 y/o Magician Could Be Dream Abada Replacement

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou is very aware of the possibility that some of his current first-team stars will move on to other clubs in the upcoming summer transfer window.

The boss told the Daily Record:

“I think it’s fair to say we are in the second year and things are embedded, that includes the core playing group. But that also gives you the opportunity to grow as a team. Part of that challenge will be the more success you have the more likely it will be that some of your players will move on.

"They get the attention of other clubs. We have to be ready to fill those gaps with players who have the ability to take us to another level altogether. So there is always those challenges there."

Who could leave Celtic this summer?

One player who appears set to be on his way out of Parkhead is Israel international Liel Abada. Football Insider reported, last month, that the forward is expected to move on after rejecting a new contract from the Scottish giants and that the club could accept an offer of up to £10m for his services.

The 21-year-old, who was once hailed as a "revelation" by former Scotland full-back Alan Hutton, has proven himself to be a reliable attacking option for Postecoglou since coming through the door at the start of last season.

Celtic forward Liel Abada.

To date, Abada has racked up 27 goals and 18 assists in 97 appearances for the Hoops whilst mainly being deployed as a right winger and the club could find his dream replacement with a player they are reportedly interested in signing.

Celtic were recently linked with a possible swoop for Talleres winger Diego Valoyes and the whiz could be an excellent addition to the squad in place of the young forward.

Who is Diego Valoyes?

The 26-year-old is a right winger who currently plies his trade in the top-flight of Argentinian football and has been capped six times by Colombia at international level.

Since joining Talleres in 2018, the 5 foot 11 magician has scored 24 goals and assisted 17 in 130 outings in all competitions – including ten goals and six assists in 46 games since the start of 2022 – and has proven himself capable of delivering goals and assists from out wide in a similar fashion to the Israel star, who too is a right-sided option.

Valoyes has averaged a Sofascore rating of 6.90 across 13 matches in the Liga Profesional de Futbol in 2023. In that time, the gem has scored two goals and created four 'big chances' – making 13 key passes – in just six starts.

These statistics show that the attacker has the quality to score goals and create opportunities for his teammates to find the back of the net, as Abada – who has registered 1.1 key passes per game in the Scottish Premiership this term – has for Celtic.

Whilst there is no guarantee that Valoyes will be able to adapt to football in Scotland, his similar form to the current Hoops ace in the final third indicates that signing him is a gamble worth taking for Postecoglou as he could be a dream replacement for the £10m wizard this summer.
