Ashwin bowls India to series-levelling win

Chappell: Second-day bowling changed game for India

India have applied a defibrillator to this series, surging to a dramatic victory on the fourth day against Australia in Bengaluru. After the first day of this Test, it was hard to tell what was deader: India’s hopes of regaining the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, or any stray blades of grass that were left on the dry pitch. Nathan Lyon had just taken eight wickets, India had been rolled for 189, and Australia had gone to stumps on 40 for 0. But then came three days of Indian fightback. It all culminated in a thrilling fourth day, which began with a six-wicket haul from Josh Hazlewood as India were bowled out for 274. That gave Australia renewed hope: on a cracking surface with variable bounce, a target of 188 would be tough but, they hoped, not impossible. And with the score moving quickly, at 42 for 1 Australia were perhaps favourites. The pressure was inescapable: on the batsmen, on the umpires, and on the Indians to live up to their dominant reputation at home. And then the wickets began to tumble, the DRS played its inevitable role, and by the time R Ashwin had Lyon caught and bowled in the 36th over, India had triumphed by 75 runs. Ashwin finished with 6 for 41 and it marked the first time in history that four different bowlers – Lyon, Ashwin, Hazlewood and Ravindra Jadeja – had taken six-wicket hauls in the same Test. It was that sort of match: wickets fell in quick succession and momentum was hard to stop.In many ways, this result was simply the resumption of normal service. There was a glitch in proceedings in Pune, where Australia ended India’s sequence of 20 home Tests without a loss. The malfunction looked like continuing after day one in Bengaluru, but for the remainder of the match India scrapped, wrestled, and fought their way back into the contest. And every time Australia looked like regaining the advantage, India wrested it back.Such was the situation on the fourth morning, when Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc delivered searing spells with the second new ball and India lost five wickets in 19 deliveries. But then India’s last pair, Wriddhiman Saha and Ishant Sharma, survived for nearly 10 overs to take the sting out of Australia’s charge. They put on only 16 runs but by slowing the speed of the match from breakneck to simply swift, they gave their team a chance to regroup.Australia knew that to succeed in their chase, they would have to score quickly. The loss of Matt Renshaw early, caught behind to a fine seamer from Ishant, did not stop them doing just that. David Warner launched one six on his way to 17 from 25 balls before he was adjudged lbw trying to sweep Ashwin. Warner asked for a review but by the barest of margins, HawkEye showed the impact in line with off stump and umpire’s call for clipping off, and Warner was gone. That moment had repercussions for Australia, for it left them with only one review and made Shaun Marsh hesitate when he was given out lbw shouldering arms to a delivery from Umesh Yadav around the wicket. An uncertain Marsh consulted with his partner, Steven Smith, who had been off the pitch to leg side and was in no position to make a definitive call. Unwilling to risk Australia’s final review, Marsh walked off: replays showed the ball was missing by a long way. But such is the pressure in a situation like this: umpire Nigel Llong had made a poor decision, and Marsh had made an equally bad one not to ask for a review. That left Smith as a key man for Australia, and he struck three boundaries on his way to 28 before he too was lbw to Umesh. Smith was done by a grubber and seemed to signal to Australia’s dressing room for advice on a review; umpire Llong stepped in to prevent the communication, and Smith walked off. A review would have been futile: he couldn’t have been plumber if he’d been wearing a Super Mario costume. From there, India were clearly in the box seat, and the wickets of Mitchell Marsh and Matthew Wade shortly before tea only made it more so. Marsh tickled a catch to short leg off Ashwin, and Wade inside edged onto his pad and a catch lobbed up for the diving wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha. The match was slipping away from Australia. It took India less than eight overs after tea to wrap up the win. Starc was bowled by a straight ball from Ashwin, and Jadeja was then rewarded for his outstanding second-innings bowling by rattling the stumps of Steve O’Keefe. Peter Handscomb, the last recognised batsman, knew he had to score quickly, and on 24 was caught skying a slog off Ashwin, who then completed the win by having Lyon caught and bowled two balls later. The series was level at 1-1, and very much alive.India’s margin might have been even bigger but for their own collapse early on the fourth day. Hazlewood’s 6 for 67 were the best figures by an Australia fast bowler in a Test innings in India for 37 years, since Geoff Dymock claimed 7 for 67 at Kanpur in October 1979. India started the morning at 213 for 4 and hoped to extend their lead past 200, but had to settle for an advantage of 187. They lost their last six wickets for 61 on the fourth morning.Starc started the carnage by swinging the new ball in to Ajinkya Rahane, who on 52 was rapped on the pad and given not out, but adjudged lbw on Australia’s review. Next ball, Karun Nair failed to handle Starc’s pace and swing and tickled an inside edge onto his stumps, and such was the ferocity of the delivery that the leg stump shattered on impact.Starc’s hat-trick delivery was negotiated by Saha, but in the next over Hazlewood had Cheteshwar Pujara caught fending a shortish ball to gully for 92. Three balls later, Ashwin was bowled by a Hazlewood delivery that stayed low. The Australians celebrated, but they must also have known that such a dismissal only highlighted how difficult their chase would be. And so it proved: all out for 112. Australia’s hopes in this match had expired, but the series was very much alive and kicking.

Aston Villa: £15m ‘Sensation’ Could Be Emery’s New Ozil

Aston Villa are reportedly interested in Fenerbahce starlet Arda Guler, as Unai Emery bids to take his side to the next level over the summer break.

With Monchi on side as president of football operations, the Spanish duo could pull off a marquee signing by snatching the 18-year-old talent from Turkey, who has caught the eye of some of Europe's top clubs already this transfer window.

A report from TEAMtalk stated that Premier League clubs Liverpool, Arsenal and Newcastle are eyeing the talent, however, Villa were named as one of the clubs that have scouted the player.

The report claims that their sources revealed that Villa were named as one of the clubs with representatives in attendance as Turkey defeated Wales last week in the Euro qualifiers.

Guler scored after being introduced in the second half, showing the array of Premier League club representatives in attendance just what he’s capable of.

Villa could pull off a steal with the teen sensation’s release clause currently standing at just €17.5m (£15m) with a contract running until 2025.

What could Arda Guler offer to Aston Villa?

Dubbed the “golden boy of Turkish football” by journalist Tom Maston, the 18-year-old ended the season as The Yellow Canaries’ best performer as per Sofascore.

With an average match rating of 7.48 in the Super Lig, the teen made 11 starts and 20 total appearances in his breakthrough campaign for Fenerbahce, scoring four goals and assisting three in the process, via Sofascore.

The youngster is deployed primarily as a central attacking midfielder, however, has the ability to play on the right wing with a tendency to cut in on his favoured left foot to add a punch in the final third.

Monchi could deliver Villa one of the continent's most encouraging young talents in Guler, and could provide Emery with the essence of one of his former players and a former Premier League talent.

Described as being “continuously compared” to ex-Arsenal creative genius Mesut Ozil, the Ankara-born gem could provide the Spaniard with shades of his former player from a time when he dominated the midfield.

Mesut Ozil Arsenal

Praised as “phenomenal” by Jose Mourinho, Ozil was integral to the Gunners’ attack when playing his best football during his time in the Premier League.

In his recorded career appearances, the German registered 222 assists throughout his domestic exploits, as well as 23 assists for the national team in which he was a member of the World Cup-winning squad, as per Transfermarkt.

At just 18, Guler could gift Villa shades of the creative know-how of the retired gem, as highlighted by his impressive average of two key passes per game, similar to the number recorded by Ozil in his final Premier League campaign where he averaged 2.2.

Lauded as a “sensation” by U23 scout Antonio Mango, the Fenerbahce gem has been tipped by Ozil himself to become a “world star” as relayed by football.london.

Ozil's performance levels may have dipped under Emery, contributing to ten goals in 42 outings under the Spaniard, but the German was still a creative marvel on his day.

To be compared to such a player is impressive and Emery’s side could be taken to the next level by procuring the youthful energy of Guler, who has displayed more attacking threat than the Spaniard’s current attacking midfield option of Emiliano Buendia, who averaged just 1.1 key passes per game last season.

With the likes of Real Madrid swarming the movements of the teenager, Monchi could pull off a huge feat in capturing the teen.

Gary Neville Scales Down Anfield In Hilarious Footage

If you asked us 15 years ago who we believed would be the great British TV duos, the last two names coming out of our mouths would have been Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher. As it turns out, however, the former rivals make for TV gold when put together, endlessly creating hilarious moments.Whether they are going back and forth on Twitter or bickering on Monday Night Football, what we often get is box-office entertainment from the two former defenders. Neville’s recent show – The Overlap – has been some of their best work yet, with one of the most recent episodes showing the duo abseiling down from the Anfield roof. It’s the kind of Mission Impossible escape plan that Neville may be wishing he opted for at half-time during some of Manchester United’s games at Anfield when he was a player, such was the fierce atmosphere.

What is the Overlap on Tour?

Hosted by Kelly Cates and Josh Denzel, the Overlap is a talk show which sees Neville, Carragher, and Roy Keane tour the UK alongside guests such as Patrice Evra and Sir Kenny Dalglish.

Keane, in particular, is a popular figure throughout, receiving the loudest ovation compared to his co-stars. As he is often heard mocking Neville, it’s no surprise he is the most enjoyed out of the panel.

Away from the talk show side of things, Sky Sports also filmed behind the scenes and had the trio taking part in various challenges in each place that they toured.

In Ireland, they took part in curling, before visiting Keane’s old stomping ground. Meanwhile, in Liverpool, not only did they abseil down Anfield, but they also went in disguise on a Liverpool stadium tour, in which we got a first (and hopefully last) glimpse at Carragher’s Scottish accent.

You can see the footage – which has been shared on Twitter – of the abseil below, though it features some strong language, so be warned:

Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher abseil down Anfield

In the hilarious footage, you can see Neville go down first, despite looking the more nervous of the two on the way up to the roof. Going ahead with the abseil anyway, the former United right-back wasted no time, before mocking Carragher, who at one stage looked likely to drop out of the activity altogether.

Neville can be heard saying: “You’ll Never Walk Alone? I f***ing am!”

He also called Carragher a “Sh**bag” as he scaled down the famous stadium, before then mocking the Liverpool badge for good measure.

His fellow Sky Sports pundit eventually made his way down the stadium, slowly but surely. Yet, it is safe to say that we won’t be seeing Carragher taking on any more heights for a while.

As for Neville, unless any “mini-retirements” interrupt, perhaps he’s found himself a new escape plan if Man United are on the end of another Liverpool thrashing next season, such as the 7-0 thumping at Anfield last term.

As for Keane, also part of the show, we’re not quite sure where he disappeared to when the words Anfield and abseil were originally brought up before the show commenced. Judging from his absence though, perhaps we can assume the usual hard man bottled it?

Regardless, fans certainly enjoyed the footage of Neville, with some taking to Twitter to react:

Maxwell named Kings XI Punjab captain

The Australian allrounder takes over the role from M Vijay, who was appointed captain midway through the last season

ESPNcricinfo staff10-Mar-20170:51

Quick Facts – Maxwell to be Kings XI Punjab’s 10th IPL captain

Glenn Maxwell has been named Kings XI Punjab captain for the tenth season of the IPL, which starts on April 5. The Australian allrounder takes over the role from M Vijay, who was appointed captain midway through the last season. Kings XI had dropped David Miller as captain in favour of Vijay after the side had lost five of their first six games in 2016.The move did not stop Kings XI from finishing last for the second successive season. Maxwell has never captained in the 338 matches he has played across formats and has been picked for the role ahead of Eoin Morgan, who led England to the World T20 final in 2016, and Darren Sammy, who captained West Indies to two T20 World Cup titles.Maxwell has had an underwhelming last two seasons in the IPL, managing 324 runs in 22 matches with only two fifties. In 2014, though, he had played a pivotal role – racking up 552 runs in 16 matches at a strike rate of 187.75 – in Kings XI’s run to their maiden final. In addition to a new captain, Kings XI will have a new second home this season, with Indore’s Holkar Stadium set to host three matches: on April 8 (v Rising Pune Supergiant), April 10 (v Royal Challengers Bangalore) and April 20 (v Mumbai Indians). The Punjab Cricket Association stadium in Mohali will stage the rest of Kings XI’s home matches.

Chelsea: "Plot twist" as things hot up on transfer front

Chelsea have a good relationship with Lyon amid their attempts to sign midfielder Rayan Cherki this window, according to journalist Dean Jones.

What's the latest transfer news involving Rayan Cherki and Christian Pulisic?

As per Football London, Cherki is a target for Chelsea this summer and the Blues sent scouts to watch the Frenchman on several occasions last season.

The report states that Chelsea are in the hunt to replace the departed Kai Havertz and Mason Mount and Cherki could represent a second arrival from Lyon in the past six months following the purchase of Malo Gusto.

One outlet in France claim that both Newcastle United and Paris Saint-German are also keen on Cherki, who Lyon will demand around £43 million for before sanctioning his departure.

David Ornstein of The Athletic has also revealed in recent times that Lyon have made advances to try and sign Chelsea winger Pulisic this window, stating on Twitter: "EXCL: Chelsea have received written offer from Lyon for Christian Pulisic. €25m (+ meaningful sell-on still being negotiated): a level CFC would find acceptable. Good relations with Textor & Olympique Lyonnais via Malo Gusto deal."

AC Milan are also keen to strike a deal for Pulisic and have submitted a bid for the USA international and hold internal belief that he would choose to move to the San Siro over a switch to Ligue 1 giants Lyon, according to 90min.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, journalist Jones thinks that Chelsea and Lyon hold an agreeable relationship as the Blues try to sign Cherki this summer.

Jones stated: "He’s right on the money when it comes to fitting Chelsea’s profiling and he is a great player, but what makes this one more interesting is that Lyon are open-minded about offers.

"And a plot twist to the Cherki interest now is that Lyon are currently making a play for Christian Pulisic, and their offer was pretty decent for him, so the conversations between the clubs are already open and the relations seem good so far."

Would Rayan Cherki fit the Chelsea project under Mauricio Pochettino?

Cherki is a creative rising star that would add some further polish to Chelsea's midfield and would fit into their philosophy of signing young stars with the potential to grow into elite stars.

Last term, the £59k-a-week ace made 39 appearances in all competitions for Lyon, registering five goals and six assists, as per Transfermarkt.

rayan-cherki-lyon

WhoScored take into account that Cherki completed an average of two key passes and 2.3 dribbles per match during the campaign, making him a dangerous presence for Ligue 1 backlines to tame.

Capable of scoring and fashioning chances for others, the Frenchman also successfully performed 128 shot-creating actions in the French top flight, as per FBRef.

Chelsea have lost a lot of experience in the middle of the part this window, letting go Ruben Loftus-Cheek, N'Golo Kante, Mateo Kovacic, Mount and Havertz.

Acting to acquire Cherki would not only help them to gain another body in midfield, but it would also excite supporters of the Blues as he has the ability to evolve into a Premier League star in the coming seasons.

Sky Sports: Man United In Talks To Sign "Quick" Forward

Manchester United are still in talks to sign Atalanta forward Rasmus Hojlund, according to Sky Sports.

Are Man United signing Rasmus Hojlund?

The Red Devils look set for a busy summer window despite the ongoing takeover saga at Old Trafford. It is believed that the club’s summer recruitment won’t be affected by the results of any takeover, with enough cash available to Erik ten Hag to invest in the team, although Financial Fair Play rules will limit what can be spent.

Mason Mount has officially become the first summer signing ahead of the new season, with the England midfielder joining from Chelsea in a deal worth £60m.

More additions appear to be on the cards, including a new goalkeeper and forward. David de Gea is out of contract at Old Trafford, which has led to plenty of speculation regarding Inter Milan’s Andre Onana. Manchester United had a £34m bid plus £5m in add-ons rejected by the Serie A side, although Fabrizio Romano has claimed a deal remains on for the Cameroon international.

In attack, Antony Martial has reportedly been put up for sale, with Atalanta’s Hojlund linked with a move to England. It was believed last month that Ten Hag even video-called the player ahead of a possible transfer. The Denmark international is thought to be keen on making the move to Old Trafford, and a further update has emerged.

Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth took to Twitter in the last 48 hours to provide a Man United transfer update. He said that a gap in valuation for Onana remains and the Red Devils are still in talks over a move for Hojlund.

“Manchester United bid worth €45m now in for Inter Milan keeper Andre Onana as per Laurie Whitwell. Gap in valuation exists – but feeling is it can be closed. United still looking at alternatives. Talks continue with Atalanta over striker Rasmus Hojlund.”

Rasmus Hojlund

How much could Man United pay for Hojlund?

Hojlund is a left-footed striker who has been described as “scary quick” by journalist Sacha Pisani. The 20-year-old has only been with Atalanta for 12 months but appears to have made an impact, contributing to 14 goals in 34 games and being compared to Manchester City’s Erling Haaland.

It is believed that those at Old Trafford would be willing to pay £51.5m for the forward who has no experience in the Premier League. Something that could help United in a potential deal is Hojlund wanting the move, and he revealed earlier this year that he is a “huge” Red Devils supporter.

"Now that you ask, I will not hide the fact that I am a huge Manchester United fan.

"So personally, it would be one of the biggest things for me, but of course that doesn’t mean that I would turn down other big clubs if the offers come at some point."

He appears to be at the top of his game with a career-high €45m Transfermarkt valuation, and by the looks of things, he could be United’s answer in attack in both the short and long term in another big-money transfer.

James Maddison Latest: Spurs In Pole Position For Foxes Ace

Tottenham Hotspur lead the race to sign Leicester City star James Maddison with Spurs even having a bid rejected for him just last week, according to reports.

Who will Spurs sign this summer?

Spurs and new manager Ange Postecoglou could attempt a raid on the Foxes this summer, with some media sources claiming they’re interested in both Maddison and forward Harvey Barnes.

The Lilywhites have held a long-standing fondness for Maddison in particular, as links date all the way back to Antonio Conte’s tenure in charge of the north London club.

Other areas of the squad need shoring up, though, with Tottenham also chasing a new goalkeeper, centre-back and additions further forward.

Spurs and chairman Daniel Levy have made serious progress in reinforcing the former position, as Empoli goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario is reliably believed to be closing in on a move.

The Italian could well be their first signing of the summer, but Tottenham won’t stop there, as it is reported that they’re chasing a new centre-back or two.

Bayer Leverkusen’s Edmond Tapsoba, Man City defender Aymeric Laporte and Man United’s Harry Maguire have all been mentioned as targets in the last few days.

Postecoglou wants attacking reinforcements as well, to add more potency in the final third, with The Guardian sharing an update on their pursuit of Maddison from Leicester.

Leicester City midfielder James Maddison.

The 26-year-old, who starred at the King Power last term, is more likely to join Tottenham than Premier League rivals Newcastle United as things stand.

Spurs have apparently “emerged as the frontrunners” to sign Maddison with the Magpies’ priorities now lying elsewhere.

Levy and co had a joint bid for Barnes and Maddison rejected just last week, but according to this report, they’re expected to make a fresh move.

The England international will leave Leicester this summer, as Euro 2024 is right around the corner and Maddison needs to be playing top-flight football.

How many goals has James Maddison scored?

A major threat going forward, the former Norwich City star registered 19 goal contributions (10 goals and nine assists) over his league appearances for Leicester last season (WhoScored).

Adding to his impressive career tally of 78 goals and 66 assists at senior level, Maddison also averaged more attempts at goal and key passes per 90 than any of his teammates over 22/23 (WhoScored).

Stats like these highlight why Spurs are so keen to sign him this summer, and members of the media like journalist Josh Bunting claim that he can be “unplayable” at times.

Harry Kane readies Levy threat to leave Tottenham for Bayern

Tottenham Hotspur star Harry Kane wants to join Bayern Munich and is even ready to threaten Daniel Levy with a free exit next year, according to reports.

Who is leaving Spurs?

The 29-year-old isn't the only star to be linked with an exit from Spurs this summer, with Ange Postecoglou said to be plotting a major N17 overhaul.

The arrivals of goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, James Maddison from Leicester City and the incoming Manor Solomon hand Tottenham the task of both recouping funds and freeing up space in Postecoglou's squad.

Of the players who could leave north London, with midfielder Harry Winks already departing for Leicester City, there are a fair few.

Hugo Lloris, Ivan Perisic, Davinson Sanchez, Ryan Sessegnon, Eric Dier, Ben Davies, Giovani Lo Celso, Sergio Reguilon and Tanguy Ndombele hae been mentioned as candidates for the chopping block (The Telegraph), while midfield regular Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is open to leaving this window.

Lloris has freely admitted he could seek a fresh opportunity, candidly telling Nice-Matin that this could be the end of an era after 11 years with Spurs.

"We have reached an important moment, whether it be for the club or me,” said Lloris

“It’s the end of an era. I have a desire for something else. I will carefully study what is possible. However, I haven’t forgotten that I have a year left on my contract at Tottenham, and in football, it’s always hard to predict what will happen."

Indeed, Tottenham supporters could be seeing a very different side next season, but one star Levy will be desperate to keep is Kane.

Bayern hold a very serious interest in the striker and their manager, Thomas Tuchel, is said to be pushing hard for him as he attempts to bring a world class forward to the Allianz Arena.

harry-kane-tottenham-hotspur

Sport Bild journalist Christian Falk, a Bayern insider, has shared an update on the matter – and it doesn't bode well for Tottenham.

Kane apparently "wants" to join the Bundesliga giants, and is even ready to threaten chairman Levy with a free transfer in 2024.

Tuchel is apparently in constant contact Tottenham's prized asset, with Kane making it very clear he is more than open to a Bayern move this summer.

Sharing details on a "secret meeting" between the pair in Kane's own house, Falk claims the Spurs star was left very impressed by the conversation with Tuchel. The former Leyton Orient loanee, following on from the discussions, "clearly assured" Bayern's manager that he is willing to join them.

After Levy thwarted Kane's exit in 2021, despite a supposed gentleman's agreement, the player is "ready to prevail" this time and could even float the danger of leaving for nothing.

The obstacle in all of this is Levy and his demands, but going by this update, the Tottenham attacker could make things very difficult for Spurs' chief by pushing for a move.

What's been said about Harry Kane?

Called a "world class" striker by Antonio Conte, the Lilywhites will be desperate not to lose Kane, who scored 30 goals in 38 league appearances last season (WhoScored).

"We are talking about a world class striker,” Conte said.

“He deserves the best because he's a great worker, hard worker… this is not normal because usually the players that have talent many times don't like to work hard because they have talent.

“In my career I didn't have great talent [so] for this reason I worked hard. What I liked about him from the first time was his ability. He was a big example for his team-mates."

Chelsea Showing "Concrete Interest" In 19-Year-Old Rising Star

Chelsea are expressing "concrete interest" in signing Flamengo youngster Matheus Franca this summer, according to a recent update from journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Who is Matheus Franca?

The 19-year-old is a bright young prospect in his homeland of Brazil currently, making a name for himself at Flamengo with his attacking quality.

Franca has already scored nine goals in 53 appearances for his current club, invariably taking up an attacking midfield role but being capable of playing deeper or even further forward in attack, and he is also a six-time capped Brazil Under-16s international.

Chelsea are seemingly set to have plenty of competition in any potential move for the teenager, as Newcastle United have been backed to snap him up in the near future, with a move to the Premier League clearly on the cards.

A new update suggests that the Blues are now at the front of the queue to snap up Franca, however, as Mauricio Pochettino looks to bring in the right players during the summer transfer window, hitting the ground running after officially coming in as manager over the weekend.

Flamengo midfielder Matheus Franca.

Are Chelsea close to signing Franca?

Taking to Twitter, Romano confirmed Newcastle's interest but said that Chelsea are genuinely interested in signing Franca this summer, with talks set to take place this week, in order for a move to be sealed before others can swoop in:

"Chelsea are showing concrete interest in Brazilian talent Matheus França as per Mail — he was on Newcastle radar in January. Understand there’s still no official bid but talks will take place this week with Flamengo. Negotiations will be around €20/25m fee."

While Franca may not yet be a household name in the English game, there is no doubt that his arrival could be met with excitement, considering the flair and unpredictability that so many young Brazilian footballers can possess, whether it be Ronaldinho, Neymar or Vinicius Jr down the years.

The Blues are also set to sign his compatriot Angelo Gabriel this week, so the club's hierarchy clearly have a focus on building a real fresh dawn for their new manager to work on long into the future. France is someone with a high ceiling who could develop into a real force eventually, but if he does join Chelsea, he should be given time to adjust to his surroundings and get used to the pace and physicality of the Premier League, rather than be expected to be an instant hit.

In Pochettino, the hope is that the Blues have someone who is an expert at dealing with youngsters, as was the case at Tottenham with Harry Kane and Dele Alli at the time, for example, and if the manager sees Franca as an ideal target, he has to be trusted in the transfer window by Todd Boehly.

The Brazilian has been hailed as a "great finisher" by coach Fabio Matias – an attribute that felt lacking at Stamford Bridge too often last season – but he has described so many aspects of his game, too, saying: "He has many important aspects to his game. In addition to technical and tactical ability, he has a very good understanding of the game. That makes him stand out because he interprets spaces well. The most talented players have an understanding of space and how to manage that."

Essex are being sued by a former youth team coach for wrongful dismissal after he warned of inappropriate standards of care at a festival at which a convicted paedophile was one of the organisers.ESPNcricinfo understands that Doug Frame, a former manager of the Essex Under-13 and Suffolk Under-17 teams, alerted the club to his concerns after the Essex Under-15 side played in a tournament run by the London Schools Cricket Association at which Wasim Aslam was an organiser.Aslam was sentenced to four years imprisonment in 2004 after indecently assaulting two teenagers.Frame has also alleged that the adults escorting the Essex Under-15 side, one of which is understood to be a well-known former player, left the team unattended until late in the evening as they went out for dinner. When Frame, who is also an employment lawyer, reported his concerns to the club he was told his services were no longer required. He argues that the reason he was given – that his son was in the set-up – is inconsistent with the county’s invitation for him to work with them at a time when his son was already involved. He is claiming wrongful dismissal under Section 43 of the Employment Rights Act. It is a section that is designed to protect whistleblowers who warn of criminality or health and safety issues. An Essex official, while declining to comment on the record, insisted Frame’s departure was mutual, that young players were cared for at all times and that the club’s actions and protocols have been approved by both Essex Police and the NSPCC. They have admitted, however, that they will not be taking part in further events organised by the London Schools Cricket Association. The case is due to be heard between 11 and 13 July.
