Tottenham: Spurs Suffer Another Injury Blow After Bryan Gil

Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Alfie Whiteman has undergone surgery after an injury blow to his ankle, and he'll join Bryan Gil on the sidelines, the club have confirmed.

What's the latest Spurs injury news?

Spurs currently have three first teamers on the treatment table with midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur, left-back Ryan Sessegnon and Gil out of action.

Bentancur suffered a ruptured ACL injury back in February, with the Uruguayan needing his own surgery in Spain and has been undergoing rehabilitation ever since.

"The injury was at a time when I was very well, but the truth is that I do not change what happened for anything,” said Bentancur in late June (ESPN via Sport Witness).

“I was missing a lot at the family level and everything that I am experiencing with my daughter and my girlfriend in these four months is priceless. That is also why my recovery time has passed so quickly and I am doing so well.

“It’s a long injury, one of the most difficult in football, but the truth is that I’m having such a good time with my family… I train the same every day, I do double shifts two or three times a week.

“I brought the club’s physiotherapist to Uruguay; we continue working and my knee is doing very well. I didn’t set a lap time, but I hope in two or three months to be at least gaining a few minutes again.”

The estimated return date for Bentancur, as things stand, is around mid-September so he isn't likely to miss much of the 2023/2024 Premier League season.

Meanwhile, Sessegnon's fitness woes at Tottenham continue, with the Englishman needing surgery on his left hamstring following a pre-season injury.

There is currently no estimated return date for the defender as he continues his recovery, with Spanish youngster Gil also sidelined after his own surgical needs. The midfielder underwent treatment on a groin injury and it's unclear on when he will return.

Whiteman, who suffered an ankle injury pre-season, is now set to join the aforementioned with Tottenham confirming he has also gone under the knife.

The 24-year-old will now begin rehab and a return date for the shot-stopper will be known in due course.

How good is Alfie Whiteman?

The Englishman's chances of a move away this window for game time have now been sadly scuppered and it's unclear what the future may hold for him.

As things stand, if Spurs cannot sell Hugo Lloris this window, Whiteman has both the Frenchman and summer signing Guglielmo Vicario ahead of him in the pecking order.

The former Ostersunds loanee, though, has been praised for his sky-high potential in recent seasons – as said by Paul Robinson in 2019 after the player penned a new deal.

He told Football Insider:

“He’s a Spurs fan as well, a massive Spurs fan, so it will be a great boost for him, he’s played for England at all levels, 16-19

“It’s always difficult as a goalkeeper as you don’t tend to get your chance and you may find he has to go out on loan, and get his game time and experience elsewhere.

“But it shows how highly the club rates him in order to give a new contract just over a year after signing one.”

Essex protect 36-point cushion as rain thwarts Lancashire

With three matches remaining, Essex move closer to the title after Manchester weather turned on its own

The Specsavers County Championship clash between league leaders Essex and second-placed Lancashire ended in a draw after rain wiped out almost four sessions of the match at Old Trafford. Both sides took nine points as Essex maintain a 36-point lead in the Championship with three matches remaining. The game ended at 16.10pm after Essex declared in order to prevent Lancashire from picking up another bowling point, with both captains then shaking hands on a draw.It transpired that Lancashire then also declared without batting and those two declarations took 20 minutes out of the game and moved the match into the last hour. Therefore both captains were able to agree that a result was not possible and the match could end in a draw.A wet outfield after heavy overnight rain meant that there was no play possible before lunch on the final day. When play did get underway at 13.40pm, Essex resumed their first innings on 115-4 in reply to Lancashire’s 290 and quickly passed their first target which was to avoid the follow-on.From there it was largely a battle for bonus points and Lancashire struck four times before tea to secure their second bowling point which moved them ahead of Essex by four points to three in the match.Ryan McLaren dismissed Adam Wheater and Ashar Zaidi before Tom Bailey bowled James Foster as Lancashire took three wickets in four overs to reduce Essex to 151-7.Jordan Clark then went on to trap Simon Harmer for 11 which triggered an early tea with Essex still 28 runs short of the 200 runs required to earn their first batting point.Ninth-wicket pairing Paul Walter and Jamie Porter guided the leaders past that point with the final delivery before the new ball was due.Lancashire captain Ryan McLaren took the new ball and at that stage, Essex promptly decided to declare on 202-8, trailing by 88 runs after the first innings. That meant that Lancashire couldn’t get that final bowling point to move ahead in the match and the gap between the top two remains the same as it was before this game.Essex are at Warwickshire next week while Lancashire travel down to Taunton to face Somerset.

Liverpool To Bid For 22-Year-Old In "Next Few Days"

Liverpool are expected to submit an offer for young Fluminense midfielder Andre in "the next few days", according to a new transfer update.

Have Liverpool been linked with Andre?

The Reds' incoming transfer business has gone quiet of late, leading to an element of frustration from the fanbase, considering the beginning of the new Premier League season is now just over a week away.

With Fabinho and Jordan Henderson joining James Milner, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain out of the exit door, Liverpool suddenly look short of options, especially in defensive midfield, where Curtis Jones has recently been filling in during pre-season.

One player who has been linked with a move to Anfield in that area of the pitch is Andre, who is considered an impressive young prospect in his homeland, making 145 appearances for Fluminense and winning one cap for Brazil.

The 22-year-old is seen as a strong option to come in, potentially as an alternative to Southampton youngster Romeo Lavia, but hopefully as an addition to him, should he complete a move to Merseyside in the near future.

Now, a new update has emerged surrounding Liverpool's interest in Andre – one that suggests he is a genuine target who could be on the way to England very shortly if Jorg Schmadtke and Jurgen Klopp get their way.

Are Liverpool signing Andre?

According to Gazeta Esportiva [via Sport Witness], the Reds are preparing to make a bid for Andre in "the next few days", with a €25m (£21.5m) offer set to be tabled. He sees the move with "good eyes", according to the report, and Liverpool themselves are confident that an agreement can be reached.

This is a positive update regarding the summer business at Anfield, with the club now needing to act quickly, in order to avoid a sticky midfield situation going into their Premier League opener away to Chelsea on August 13th.

Granted, Andre wouldn't be likely to be thrown straight into Liverpool's starting lineup for that game, considering he would need to take time to adjust to his new surroundings, but he would still come in as an immediate important figure who could make up for the loss of Fabinho and Henderson, hopefully along with Lavia.

The Brazilian has been lauded for being "capable of doing everything" on the pitch by a scouting report from Breaking The Lines, while football talent scout Jacek Kulig has hailed him as a "high-quality roaming playmaker".

At 22, there would be so much more to come from Andre, too, and he really could be an long-term signing, assuming he makes a seamless transition from Brazilian football to the Premier League.

If Liverpool can sign him and Lavia, it could solve their No.6 issue for many years to come, while a left-sided centre-back is also required – one who can shine at left-back, too, and be adept at thriving in a back-three at times, when Trent Alexander-Arnold moves from right-back into midfielder when Liverpool are in possession.

Should all three pieces of business be completed, the Reds will have had a very successful summer, but it remains to be seen if that will happen.

Everton Could Ditch Keane With Swoop For £45m "Soldier"

Everton have been, perhaps understandably, heaping the majority of their transfer attention this summer on fortifying the frontline after a toothless attacking effort last term resulted in near-relegation from the Premier League.

Youssef Chermiti is set to complete a transfer to Merseyside imminently, while the versatile Ashley Young, now aged 37, and attacker Arnaut Danjuma joining on a free transfer and loan deal respectively. But as yet, the central defence remains untouched.

This is despite Yerry Mina and Conor Coady leaving the Goodison Park side this summer, and as such, manager Sean Dyche will be hoping to seal an impressive swoop for Chelsea ace Trevoh Chalobah.

What's the latest on Trevoh Chalobah to Everton?

According to Football Insider, the Toffees have 'set their sights' on the Englishman after Chelsea informed him that he is free to depart Stamford Bridge.

Read the latest Everton transfer news HERE…

This follows news from the Evening Standard at the end of July revealing that the west London Blues have slapped a £45m asking price on the 24-year-old titan.

How good is Trevoh Chalobah?

Everton's defence held up, for the most part, last season, with James Tarkowski and now-departed loanee Conor Coady thriving in the early stages of the campaign, with former manager Frank Lampard lauding the "hugely important" partnership last year.

However, Coady lost his place following Dyche's arrival and given that the injury-prone Mina has also left the club this summer, it's vital that a fresh face is brought in to strengthen the backline and ensure that Jordan Pickford's goal is well-protected.

Described as a "soldier" by his former Blues boss Graham Potter, Chalobah's £45m price tag will be a deterrent for any judicious suitors, but if Everton director of football Kevin Thelwell manages to whittle the price down, a new leader could cement a starting berth at the back for years to come at Goodison Park.

Chalobah, who has been described as a "delight" by Lampard, has made 63 appearances for Chelsea since breaking into the first-team, but with Wesley Fofana, Axel Disasi and Benoit Badiashile all signed since last summer and Levi Colwill set for a starring role after returning from an excellent loan spell with Brighton & Hove Albion, Chalobah's role would be peripheral at best.

And that is after starting only 18 times in the English top-flight last year; the £50k-per-week colossus must decide if he wants regular football at this stage of his career, and if so, Goodison Park is the perfect destination.

Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah.

Ranking among the top 17% of centre-backs across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for pass completion, the top 17% for progressive carries and the top 18% for successful take-ons per 90, as per FBref, Chalobah would bring the dynamism, ball-playing aptitude and directness to offer Everton something different.

With James Tarkowski set to retain his role as the starring no-nonsense titan at the back, as it stands, Michael Keane is his most likely partner, but if Dyche truly wishes to lift the Toffees from mediocrity, he must ditch the man who has played 119 matches across two clubs for the 52-year-old, replacing him with the younger, effervescent Chalobah.

The 30-year-old regained his place in the starting line-up following Dyche's arrival in January, but the £80k-per-week dud has been culpable of "amateurish defending" too many times, as has been said by reporter Tony Scott.

Also branded a "defensive liability" by Richard Buxton, Keane ranks among the bottom 1% of positional peers for pass completion and the bottom 2% for tackles per 90, and it's time for Dyche to untether himself from his long-time ally, who is now surely past it.

Chalobah would bring fresh life, so Thelwell simply must get him signed to serve as the perfect heir to Keane's position with the Merseyside outfit.

Aston Villa "Open" To Selling "Prolific" £20k-p/w Player

Aston Villa are "open" to selling Cameron Archer this summer, and a reliable journalist has revealed that he's attracting significant attention heading into the final few weeks of the transfer window.

When did Cameron Archer join Aston Villa?

The England youth international has been with the club ever since his childhood days having graduated from the academy to get promoted to the first team back in 2021, but having only ever made 13 senior appearances, his future is looking uncertain despite still having four years remaining on his contract.

Over the course of his career, the 21-year-old has been sent out on three development loans to Solihull Moors, Preston North End and Middlesbrough in order to gain further experience and game time, but Unai Emery recently shut down claims that he could depart.

Speaking during a public interview about Ollie Watkins potentially signing a new deal, the boss brought up the centre-forward’s name and revealed that he was planning to keep him in the building for the upcoming season in the Premier League. He said:

“The idea is of course to extend his contract because we are very happy with him and he is our striker, not only him because we also have Duran and Cameron Archer. We have to use every player and we need other players as well to help and support us. We are not speaking about the possibility of them going on loan.

"He’s (Duran) a player we will need because he is our second striker with Archer and we have to use both as well and we have to give them chances to help us, but it’s not a possibility for Jhon Duran to go on loan, it’s to stay here.”

Is Cameron Archer leaving Aston Villa?

Taking to Twitter X, The Athletic's David Ornstein revealed that Aston Villa are willing to let go of Archer this summer, whilst also providing the huge news that Aaron Ramsey is close to completing a move to Burnley. He wrote:

"Burnley reach verbal agreement with Aston Villa for Aaron Ramsey. Working to finalise deal ~ £14m + add-ons + buyback. Personal terms in place, medical being scheduled. #AVFC also open to Cameron Archer sale amid strong interest."

Middlesbrough's former loan striker Cameron Archer.

During his time on loan at Middlesbrough last season, Archer racked up a remarkable 17 goal contributions (11 goals and six assists) in 23 appearances, form which saw him dubbed a “prolific” striker by talent scout Jacek Kulig, so Emery going back on his word and letting him go could be a huge mistake.

The Unique Sports Group client, who pockets £20k-per-week, was also averaging 1.8 shots and 1.2 key passes per second-tier game at the Riverside Stadium which saw him receive three man-of-the-match awards, via WhoScored, showing just how much of a threat he can pose in the final third.

The Walsall-born talent additionally provides the boss with plenty of versatility with his ability to operate everywhere across the frontline so it makes no sense to want to get rid of him, but if Monchi and Emery are adamant that they want him gone, they will have to try and use his outstanding form to demand a respectable fee before the end of the window.

Man United Handed Potential Transfer Boost

Sofyan Amrabat has turned down offers from Saudi Arabia as his priority is a switch to Manchester United, according to Fabrizio Romano

The Moroccan midfielder looks set to depart Fiorentina this summer.

What is the latest Sofyan Amrabat news?

It seems the midfielder has made his decision on his future.

According to a report from L'Equipe, the Fiorentina player was a target for Saudi Arabian side Al-Ahli, who wanted to add him to their squad which includes new signings Edouard Mendy, Riyad Mahrez, Roberto Firmino and Allan Saint-Maximin. The report also stated that the Moroccan was set to make his decision on his preferred destination in the following days, and that his current club had resigned themselves to the fact that he was to depart this summer.

United have been long time admirers of Amrabat, having tried to bring in the midfielder back in the January window following his impressive performances during the World Cup that saw him get named in the World Cup Team of the Tournament.

The deal never happened and Amrabat remained with Fiorentina for the rest of the season, which was a campaign that saw him lose out in both the Coppa Italia final and the Europa Conference League final. Red Devils manager Erik ten Hag previously worked with the defensive midfielder at Utrecht, and is pushing for the club to complete the transfer.

sofyan-amrabat-fiorentina-tottenham-hotspur-transfer-gossip-mousa-dembele-postecoglou

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano revealed that Amrabat had turned down the offer from Saudi Arabia, as he is focused on completing a switch to the Red Devils. The Italian journalist also stated that United are waiting on the sales for Fred and Van de Beek to fund the transfer.

"Sofyan Amrabat, rumoured as potential target for Al Ahli last week, from what I understand, he does not want to negotiate with Al Ahli, but also all Saudi clubs as his priority now is Europe. Sofyan Amrabat wants to go to Man United, so he rejected very important financial approaches from Saudi because he wants to wait for Man United.

"As I always told you, there is no official bid to Fiorentina as they have to sell Fred, and it’s not going to be to Galatasaray from what I’m told, so other clubs are keen on Fred. But also, Donny Van de Beek, the conversation with Real Sociedad is ongoing, so Man United wait to sell one between Van de Beek and Fred before proceeding, but both will leave guys by the end of the summer, and then they will proceed with a bid for Amrabat, that is the plan at the moment."

Who do Man United have to sell for Amrabat?

There are two midfielders who could depart Old Trafford this summer to create the space for Amrabat.

One name Romano mentioned was Fred. The 30-year-old has seen his role reduced at United under ten Hag, and with the arrival of Mason Mount as well as the potential signing of Amrabat, opportunities would be even further limited for the Brazilian.

According to a report from 90min, Galatasaray have seen an offer rejected that fell below the asking price of £20m set by Man United, and have since pulled away according to Fabrizio Romano. Saudi clubs remain interested in the midfielder, and Fulham could reignite the interest they showed earlier on in the summer.

Fred

The other name mentioned by Romano was Van de Beek. The Dutch international has had a disappointing career at Old Trafford following his £39m switch from Ajax in 2020, having only made 60 appearances for the club during a three-year spell blighted by injury problems that have forced him to miss 52 games.

According to reports, Real Sociedad have opened talks regarding the midfielder despite concerns about the player's injury problems, with the asking price set to be £25m.

Du Plessis ruled out for six weeks

The South Africa captain suffered an acute lumbar disc injury in the third ODI against Bangladesh on Sunday

Firdose Moonda24-Oct-2017Faf du Plessis will be sidelined for six weeks after suffering an acute lumbar disc injury in the third ODI against Bangladesh on Sunday. Du Plessis had to retire hurt on 91 and could not return to lead the team in the field. He had already been ruled out of the two-match T20 series, which starts on Thursday, but will now also miss most of the domestic T20 competition with the aim to be fit for the inaugural four-day, day-night Test against Zimbabwe on Boxing Day.In du Plessis’ absence, JP Duminy will lead the T20 side, which also includes AB de Villiers and Hashim Amla.Du Plessis’ injury should not impact any international commitments with South Africa’s calendar empty until Boxing Day. Warner goes back to the type of bats he began with

In a set of new rules, effective for series beginning from September 28, the ICC stipulated that the size of bats be reduced. Now, the thickness of the edge cannot be more than 40 mm and the thickness of the bat must not exceed 67 mm. David Warner, whose bat has often been brought up as an example of batsmen having it easy in the modern era, has already complied with the new regulations, though he could have completed the tour of India with his soon-to-be-oversized bats.”Well, my bats have already been changed,” Warner said in Bengaluru on the eve of the fourth ODI against India. “I’ve been using them for the last couple of weeks. In Bangladesh, getting used to it. It basically is the same bat that I started my career with. So I just basically took it down to my bat-maker and said, ‘We just got to go back to what we started with’. And it didn’t really affect me then, so I don’t think it’d affect me now. “Would the fact that he has to contend with a reduced sweet spot not play on his mind when he’s trying to clear the boundary? “I think everyone’s sort of been misled in a way where they think the big bats clear the fences easier than the old bats used to,” Warner said. “From where I stand on it, basically, we were hitting sixes with the bats five-six years ago and still hitting sixes today. So in theory, in saying that, your bat’s got more moisture in the wood. The bats broke probably a lot more recently because there’s less moisture in the bat. So at the end of the day, you obviously have to use what you’re given and it’s not going to make a difference at all.”As a result, we have an interesting little coincidence. Warner will be playing his 100th ODI on Thursday, wielding a bat similar to the ones he used when he first broke into the scene. The achievement filled him with pride, considering he started as a T20 basher, and he pointed to a change in mind-set about 18 months ago that helped him crack the 50-over format. From his debut in January 2009, he averaged a modest 37 over his first 71 matches, with only five centuries. Back then, he thought he only had to give the team a fast start and then go cool off in the dressing room. Since March 2016, however, Warner has begun to understand his role better, and it has led to a stark rise in his numbers. Warner has amassed eight centuries in 28 innings, he has been unbeaten twice, and he is still scoring at over a run a ball.”Playing Test cricket’s allowed me to actually nurture my game in the 50 overs and take a bit more time and try and bat through the middle period as well,” he said. “Not bat in such an aggressive manner and play the game as it is and let it unfold and set the platform for the rest of the guys coming in. I didn’t really think about that when I first came into the set-up. We had Pup [Michael Clarke], Smithy [Steven Smith], Mike Hussey, we had these guys that were such good finishers, I just thought my role was to go out there and blast it for 15-20 overs. And you don’t realise that you’re there to bat 50.”Through the last 18 months, I’ve had such a consistent patch because I’ve learnt to adapt to that mentality while I’m out there. And if I get myself in, try to be there towards the 35-40-over mark, and go on with it. I’ve prided myself on doing that. And setting the benchmark of 150, for any of us as an opener, if you get in, that’s the benchmark to try and achieve in your innings.”Finding the skill to adapt his game to the longer formats has given Warner a great sense of comfort, and he looked forward to becoming one of only 28 Australians to the mark of 100 ODIs. “It’s a significant milestone for myself and my family. I’m extremely proud for where I am today, coming from playing a Twenty20 game at the MCG in front of 90,000 people to then be called up a couple of games later to represent Australia in the ODI format, I never thought I would come so far.”I’ve got a great bunch of team-mates around me. Obviously, Smithy bringing up his 100th game a couple of days ago, we’ve come a long way from where we were as juniors, not being picked, me being dropped and him taking my spot etc. We’ve had a great friendship over those years, and to play in our 100th together is massive for us and we’re very proud of that.”Considering the amount of time he has been around, this is Warner’s first ODI series in India, and it’s been a surprising experience. “Coming here to play ODIs for the first time has been different. Obviously two new white balls, the first two games have been different – first a 21-over game, and then in Kolkata the ball was swinging around and it was totally different to what I expected.”That’s probably the toughest conditions I faced from a white-ball point of view. It swung a lot more than it did in England. I think when you adapt your games to the conditions… last game was probably the game where it was traditional one-day cricket – the ball didn’t swing as much, the wicket was nice to bat on. I obviously didn’t make the most of getting in [dismissed for 42]. So that’s probably a thing for me to reflect on, and hopefully, I can bring out here in this game and go on with it.”
