Thomas-Asante starts in West Brom predicted lineup vs Rotherham

Carlos Corberan will be fearing the worst ahead of West Bromwich Albion's trip to Rotherham United tonight, losing to the Millers at the New York Stadium would be the Baggies' third defeat on the spin with injuries stacking up for the West Midlanders at present.

The playoff-chasers will be without Matt Phillips and Jed Wallace in midfield for the game in South Yorkshire, whilst Josh Maja was substituted off in the 2-1 loss to Sunderland last match owing to a knock and looks as if he too will be absent for the contest.

West Brom man out on loan could resolve Corberan's injury problems

Injury issues at West Brom just keep piling up, with Carlos Corberan tempted to recall this loanee to fix them.

ByKelan Sarson Dec 11, 2023

Corberan will be scrambling around to decide what starting team he should field for the game tonight, with this predicted XI on the cards as one Baggies dud looks as if he will miss out…

1 GK – Alex Palmer

West Brom goalkeeper Alex Palmer.

Alex Palmer will be retained in this starting line-up by Corberan for the trip to Yorkshire, yet to miss a game this season under the Spanish boss.

Palmer was credited with three saves away from conceding twice in the 2-1 defeat to Sunderland as per Sofascore, helping to keep the scoreline respectable at the Stadium of Light.

2 RB – Darnell Furlong

Darnell Furlong is a well-respected figure at the Hawthorns in defence, amassing 172 appearances for the Baggies to date.

This season, he's been largely everpresent under Corberan but wasn't at his best versus the Black Cats – losing possession a grand total of 20 times to consistently put his team under unnecessary pressure.

Still, with two goals and one assist from right-back this campaign, Corberan will hope he can be a creative force against Rotherham United to expose a leaky Millers defence whilst also competently completing his standard defensive duties.

3 CB – Kyle Bartley

Kyle Bartley will also likely start away at Rotherham tonight, the tough centre-back helping his well-oiled side keep seven clean sheets when playing this season.

Still, even the most experienced players have off days as was evident in the 32-year-old's individual performance against Sunderland – substituted off on the 75th minute mark after losing all of his duels.

Despite this poor display, Bartley will be trusted at the back for the trip to Rotherham.

4 CB – Cedric Kipre

Cedric Kipre exited the field of play at the Stadium of Light with his head held high despite the final score, the Ivorian centre-back doing his utmost to thwart Sunderland advancing forward.

Kipre would win six of his nine duels in the 2-1 defeat whilst also winning a combined five interceptions and tackles against the Black Cats.

5 LB – Conor Townsend

Conor Townsend

Conor Townsend didn't quite cover himself in glory however compared to Kipre's valiant efforts, the Baggies captain putting in an unconvincing shift versus Sunderland.

The 30-year-old was ineffective going forward with one failed cross attempt, whilst Patrick Roberts for the hosts routinely had him on toast with Roberts completing three successful dribble attempts.

He will however start owing to a lack of other options at left-back being readily available, the Baggies skipper eager to show what's truly capable of again at the New York Stadium.

6 CM – Okay Yokuşlu

West Brom midfielder Okay Yokuslu.

Okay Yokuşlu will walk back into Corberan's starting lineup for the game at Rotherham tonight after serving a suspension, the Turkish midfielder's stand-in Jayson Molumby was poor throughout the slim Sunderland defeat when gifted a rare first-team appearance.

Molumby failed to impose himself onto the contest with zero tackles registered, whilst further being wasteful venturing forward with two off-target efforts attempted in a dire 60-minute spell on the pitch.

It led to Birmingham Live journalist Joseph Chapman giving Molumby a 5/10 rating for his performance at the Stadium of Light, singling out the midfielder for his "erratic" passing.

Yokuşlu will start ahead of Molumby and make that position his own again, hoping to be a forceful and disruptive presence that can easily nullify Rotherham and help his team get back to winning ways.

7 CM – Alex Mowatt

Alex Mowatt shined where Molumby failed against Sunderland, the former Leeds United man was calm and controlled on the ball with three key passes registered in a bright 90 minutes for the midfielder.

He was also a presence that Sunderland had to keep tabs on defensively, notching up two efforts on Anthony Patterson's goal with one effort having to be blocked.

Mowatt will hope he can be a creative spark again when his team face off against Rotherham United, keen to add another goal or assist to his season tally versus the Millers from a holding role – the 28-year-old credited with a solitary goal and two assists so far after 18 games played.

8 RM – Grady Diangana

Grady Diangana for West Brom

Grady Diangana has played in a whole host of positions in attack for the Baggies recently, filling in where needed in the absence of star men Phillips and Wallace in the team.

The ex West Ham United forward has been played recently through the centre as an attacking midfield option on top of playing as a lone striker, but he underwhelmed reverting back to his natural right wing spot against Sunderland.

But, despite failing to hit a single shot on target against the Black Cats in a torrid 60-minute display, Corberan will continue to persist with his out-of-form attacker praying that he flickers back into life soon.

With Rotherham conceding 39 goals this campaign to date – the leakiest defence in the division this season – Diangana could cause the Millers all sorts of havoc at the back if he is firing on all cylinders again.

9 CAM – John Swift

Likewise, John Swift on his day can terrorise Championship defences but the former Chelsea midfielder was nowhere near his best versus Sunderland.

Labelled by Birmingham Live journalist Joseph Chapman as looking "rusty" – an understandable description considering he is just back from a long-term injury lay-off – Swift will need to get back up to speed soon to help his team going forward in crunch matches to come.

Much like Diangana, Corberan will just hope starting Swift against a poor Rotherham side can give him a boost and get him back on the scoresheet after a blistering start to the second-tier season – scoring six times for the Baggies before an injury cruelly intervened.

10 LM – Jeremy Sarmiento

West Brom's on-loan winger has shown flashes of his brilliance this campaign since making the temporary switch from Brighton, his long-range strike against Cardiff City recently a standout moment from his short time with the club.

He was quiet in stark contrast away at the Stadium of Light last time out but showed glimpses again of his immense quality in patches.

Firing three efforts at Patterson's goal in the game, with just one being dangerous enough to require a block, Corberan will hope his loaned-in winger can find the back of the net again in spectacular fashion versus Rotherham to help his team pick up three points.

Nawaz, Afif and Sabbir consign Khulna to massive defeat

The trio’s firepower motored Sylhet to 195 before Khulna crumbled to 137 all out under the magnitude of the chase

The Report by Mohammad Isam26-Jan-2019

Raton Gomes/BCB

How the game played outLocal firepower helped Sylhet Sixers to a 58-run win over Khulna Titans. Liton Das, Afif Hossain and Sabbir Rahman struck quick runs to power them to 195 for 4 in 20 overs. Sixers made a solid start when Liton and Afif added 71 for the opening stand, before Sabbir and Mohammad Nawaz provided a flourish in their 89-run unbroken fifth-wicket stand.Afif’s 49 contained five fours and two sixes, while Sabbir cracked four fours and two sixes in his unbeaten 29-ball 44. Sixers then bowled with much discipline too, particularly Nabil Samad, who finished with 3 for 20 from his four overs.Turning points Sabbir Rahman and Mohammad Nawaz plundering 52 runs in the last three overs to give the Sixers a much-needed scoring spike Jason Roy’s amazing one-handed catch, running from long-off and diving full length to his left, to get rid of Brendan Taylor when he was looking dangerous.Star of the dayAfif played some superb strokes during his 37-ball knock, timing the ball well through point and square leg after starting his scoring with a six off Subashis Roy.The big missTitans’ bad day was summed up by the run out of Junaid Khan in the 18th over. After Nawaz had half-stopped the ball, he began examining his fingers for an injury. When called out to throw the ball, Nawaz scored a direct hit, and despite all the time the batsmen had in their hands to decide on the extra run, Junaid was stranded well outside his crease at the non-striker’s end, when Nawaz found the stumps with his throw.Where the teams standWith eight points, Sixers crawled back up to fifth place, displacing Rajshahi Kings. Titans, however, seem to be out of the tournament after their eighth defeat in 10 games.

De Bruyne inspire Man City win over BrightonHailed as better than Lampard and GerrardFoden growing under Belgian's guidanceGettyWHAT HAPPENED?

The Belgian pulled out yet another classic performance against Brighton as he scored the opener for Pep Guardiola's side. After the match, Redknapp was all praises for De Bruyne and even went as far as calling him better than the likes of Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard and Yaya Toure. He also talked about Phil Foden and how the youngster is learning from the Belgian.

AdvertisementWHAT REDKNAPP SAID

Speaking after the match with , Redknapp said: "It's the master and the master. With Phil Foden and what he is doing right now, he looks so good. He has always got the picture in his mind. Kevin De Bruyne for me, we have seen some greats, such as Gerrard, Lampard, Yaya Toure. But he is the top one. I think he does things that are out of this world. The passes that he has seen, there are not many that can do that. I am in awe of him every time I watch him.

"You need good role models. It is great for Phil Foden to see Kevin De Bruyne every day. Just trying to learn and take something from him. There is no doubt that Phil Foden is playing so well because he has taken great lessons from Kevin De Bruyne."

Getty THE BIGGER PICTURE

De Bruyne has been a hit at City ever since he joined from Wolfsburg in 2015. Since then, the Belgian has gone on to become one of, if not the best, midfielders in the world. He has won the Premier League five times and has set them on the path to win the title yet again.

Mustafizur, Mehidy put Rajshahi Kings on the BPL board

How the game played outThe early season batting woes for Khulna Titans showed no signs of abating in another lopsided loss. After two losses to open the season, the Titans attempted to bulk up their batting by bringing in Dawid Malan as a replacement for injured fast bowler Ali Khan and had a promising first five overs in which they reached 40 for 1 behind the opening pair of Junaid Siddiqui and Paul Stirling. But the Titans wheezed through the rest of their innings, finishing with 117 for 9 in 20 overs. Rajshahi Kings’ left-arm pace tandem of Isuru Udana and Mustafizur Rahman (8-0-33-5) along with legspinner Qais Ahmad kept the Titans off-balance, refused to let them find any rhythm and triggered a series of forced slogs for catches on the boundary.Mohammad Hafeez fell slogging to mid-on in the second over of the chase, but it was the last glimmer Titans had of defending a small target. Kings coasted to victory thanks to an 89-run stand between Mominul Haque and Mehidy Hasan.Turning points

  • Titans’ hot start was neutralised by a wicket-maiden from Udana in the sixth over, when Siddiqui spliced a pull to deep square leg
  • Mahmudullah appeared to be struck well above the knee roll by Mustafizur in the 11th over, but his attempt to overturn the lbw decision against him was denied by his review returning an umpire’s call verdict with the ball shown to be clipping the bails
  • The well-set Malan targeted Soumya Sarkar’s part-time medium pace to start the 17th over, but the decision backfired when he skied a catch to long-on. Titans, who were 101 for 5 at the time, barely lasted the 20 overs

Star of the dayMehidy had the Midas touch with his bowling changes, in particular his use of Qais as well as the decision to bring on Sarkar to strike a decisive blow removing Malan. He followed his shrewd captaincy by making a half-century to pilot the chase. The big missAlso from Mehidy. Seemingly disengaged by the ease of the chase, he shuffled too far across his stumps and was bowled behind his legs by a Zahir Khan googly when his team needed only nine to win off 17 balls.Where the teams standTitans remain rooted to the bottom of the table having gone winless through three matches. Kings now have two points having won their first game of the season.

Warner to resume batting in a month, after elbow surgery

David Warner will get around a month’s batting practice ahead of his return from the Newlands scandal ban that ends on March 28

David Warner will get around a month’s batting practice ahead of his return from the Newlands scandal ban, after clean-up surgery to his elbow did not uncover as many issues as those experienced by the former Australia captain Steven Smith. In surgery following his return home from the Bangladesh Premier League, Warner was hopeful of regaining a full range of movement in the elbow after a series of problems in recent years.ALSO READ: Steven Smith international return date in doubt due to elbow surgeryNevertheless, the procedure was less involved and not as serious as the one undertaken by Smith, who will be in a race against time to be fit to play when the duos’ bans expire at the end of March, most likely in the midst of an ODI series against Pakistan.”David Warner underwent surgery yesterday to remove a bone spur and loose bone in his elbow that was causing an inflamed joint,” a CA spokesman said.”David will undergo rehabilitation in which we expect him to be able to begin moving his arm by the end of the week, and within 3-4 weeks resume batting, with his return to playing to be determined soon after that.”Australia’s captain Tim Paine and coach Justin Langer have more or less conceded that both banned batsmen will be recalled the instant they are eligible, after the minimal batting depth in the national system was ruthlessly exppsed at home by India.”I spoke to them both last night actually,” Langer told on Tuesday. “I think Davey is going to get a clean-up, I don’t think Davey’s is as serious as Steve’s was. That said, Steve is in a brace for the next 5-6 weeks I think.”What we do know about them is, they haven’t been good players, they’ve been great players for Australia.”We are obviously monitoring them very closely and we are hopeful they will be getting themselves fit and strong and putting their name up for selection. It’s an exciting time coming up.”

Chelsea could move on from injury-prone James with £35m "monster" in January

Chelsea came into this season on the back of an impressive pre-season campaign and with an element of hope that, with new boss Mauricio Pochettino, they could fight their way back into the European places come May.

However, with 16 games of the Premier League season already played – almost half – the Blues are once again in the bottom half of the table, and based on performances, rightly so.

That said, injuries haven't helped the young side, especially in the case of club captain Reece James, who had to come off against Everton on the weekend and is now set to spend a second spell on the sidelines this season.

While his absence will undoubtedly cause more headaches for Pochettino, there is some good news, as the latest player linked with Stamford Bridge could even replace the Cobham graduate altogether – Denzel Dumfries.

Chelsea transfer news – Denzel Dumfries

According to Italian outlet Calciomercatio, Inter Milan star Dumfries has courted the attention of Premier League sides Chelsea and Manchester United, with both teams keen on signing the player in 2024.

The interest of United is undoubtedly one of the barriers that the Blues will have to overcome if they want to sign the Dutchman, but the other is the price, as according to Calciomercato.IT, the Nerazzurri will not sell their player for anything less than €40m – which works out to about £35m.

Inter Milan star Denzel Dumfries

It would represent another sizeable investment from Todd Boehly and co, though with how well the "monster", as described by journalist Alan Rzepa, has performed in Italy and the uncertainty surrounding James' fitness, it would likely be worth it.

Denzel Dumfries could replace Reece James and Malo Gusto

Now, James is obviously an enormous talent and widely considered one of the best right-backs in world football, but if he can't stay fit for more than a couple of months, then Chelsea simply can not benefit from his talent.

Since making his debut for the Blues in September 2019, the "world-class" 24-year-old, as described by talent scout Jacek Kulig, has suffered 17 injuries – not including the latest one – which have made him miss a combined 463 days of action and 89 games for club and country, per Transfermarkt.

With a record such as that, the chance of James following a career trajectory similar to Jack Wilshere, another uber-talented youngster, is worryingly high. And with Malo Gusto – who is also currently sidelined – not exactly tearing up trees this year, it could be time for the club to look at another long-term solution at right-back.

When comparing the trios' underlying numbers, Dumfries simply has to measure up well with the Chelsea captain; if he can be 75% of the player 100% of the time, it will be more useful to Pochettino.

Unsurprisingly, there are some areas in which the former Wigan loanee comes out on top, such as tackles won and non-penalty expected goals and assists. However, the Serie A defender comes out ahead in plenty of other areas.

Ultimately, for as fantastic as James is, and for as outrageously high as his potential might be, the fact that he can't seem to string a run of games together at age 24 should be – and probably is – ringing alarm bells at Chelsea.

For the reasonable fee of around £35m, the two-time European champions should strongly consider signing Dumfries as he would be a more than adequate player to play in James' place and potentially instead of him if the injuries remain a problem.

PIF may make new forward signing due to "trust" issues with Newcastle star

Newcastle United have struggled to compete on all fronts so far this season due to both a lack of squad depth and their injury misfortunes. Eddie Howe may look back on the summer transfer window with great regret, having clearly failed to welcome enough reinforcements. Meanwhile, the biggest addition that he did sign was Sandro Tonali, who is now banned for ten months due to breaching betting rules. As the festive period approaches too, they may find it harder than ever to maintain their form in both the Premier League and other competitions.

The January transfer window will feel like a late Christmas present for those at St James' Park, who could finally see certain issues solved. And that could include adding depth to one position that so desperately needs it amid a reported lack of faith in one specific player.

Newcastle United transfer news

At the end of the summer transfer window, one problem that immediately stood out at Newcastle was their lack of central defenders. Yet, as the season has progressed, another concern has emerged in Howe's attacking options, with just Callum Wilson and Alexander Isak to call on when it comes to leading the line for the Magpies.

Newcastle striker Alexander Isak.

According to Dean Jones, Newcastle don't trust Isak's ability to stay fit and are now looking into the idea of signing a striker in the January transfer window. Jones told the Chasing Green Arrows Podcast: “I know there are concerns at Newcastle at the moment about whether they need to sign a new forward in January because of Isak and Wilson. They can’t be undone by this, it would be gutting for them if they didn’t have another option.

“They really will contemplate going after another attacking option, it will probably be a versatile one that can play wide as well, Isak is a great option to go wide as well, but I don’t think they trust Isak to stay fit between now and the end of the season which is probably wise.”

Alexander Isak's injury history

PIF and Newcastle are right in their concern over their striker's ability to stay fit. Isak's injury history does not make for pretty reading and the Swede has already missed six games in the current campaign, leaving Wilson as the only forward available. Wilson's injury history isn't exactly great, either, and he's also already missed six games this season. If the Magpies don't sign another forward, they are simply playing a game of chance when it comes to whether or not they'll have a striker available.

In total, Isak and Wilson have missed a combined 37 games since last season, which is one game away from an entire campaign. Given their European exploits, Newcastle must add depth to their frontline. The last thing that Howe needs is to run the risk of being without a natural striker when playing at such a high level. It could make or break the Magpies' top four pursuit.
