Beale could end Burstow’s Sunderland career by signing “excellent” star

Sunderland suddenly felt the gulf in quality between themselves and the automatic promotion sides in the late kick-off on Saturday, succumbing to a 2-1 defeat away at Ipswich Town who occupy second place in the Championship.

That loss at Portman Road means the Black Cats are now an astounding 18 points off the top two, whilst the defeat also saw Sunderland shoved out of the playoff positions for a resurgent Coventry City to leapfrog Michael Beale's men into sixth spot on goal difference.

Sunderland are still crying out for a prolific goalscorer – Beale's outfit finding the back of the net a weak 37 times this campaign – and could well go after this current League One in-form man to help fix these recurring issues up top.

According to reports, via The Sunderland Echo, Barnsley striker John McAtee is subject to interest from Sunderland, the Championship promotion hopefuls praying that McAtee relocates and becomes the star they need to lead the line.

However, they will have to fend off a whole host of other second-tier clubs to land the Tykes loanee this month with Ipswich, Cardiff City and Plymouth all also in for the 24-year-old attacker as per reports.

With his parent club in Luton Town arguably wanting McAtee to be tested in tougher surroundings away from the comforts of League One, the Black Cats would be foolish not to try and secure his services despite all this frenzied interest.

Yet, if a deal was reached, it could signal the end of Mason Burstow's loan at the Stadium of Light – the Chelsea loanee having a torrid time of it on Wearside to date and could be moved on soon.

Why John McAtee is better than Mason Burstow

Straight off the bat, the 6 foot 1 star has shown this season that he knows where the back of the net is compared to his toothless Sunderland counterpart.

This campaign, in all competitions, McAtee has bagged nine goals whilst also showing his unselfish side for Barnsley by helping himself to three assists as well.

In stark contrast, Burstow has struggled every time he's pulled on a Black Cats strip this season with 17 forgettable appearances passing him by with not a single goal managed.

McAtee's display against Port Vale on Boxing Day showcased his importance to Barnsley as a clinical finisher in the Tykes team, singlehandedly steering Neill Collins' men to a 3-2 victory with two decisive strikes in the contest.

Catching out Conor Ripley in the Vale net with a long-range screamer to make it 3-1, fans of the South Yorkshire club will be anxiously waiting to see if their paramount loanee moves on to pastures new in the Championship after such an impressive loan spell so far.

Those two strikes came about despite McAtee only amassing a meagre 23 touches in the entire game, the Black Cats desperately needing a deadly figure in their squad like McAtee to avoid more feeble displays in attack cropping up again such as the Ipswich loss – the visitors to Portman Road only notching up three on-target efforts across the 90 minutes.

Described as being "excellent" by Tykes boss Collins after netting another goal against Stevenage in December, McAtee could well want a fresh challenge after teasing League One defenders for fun recently.

With Nazariy Rusyn showing signs of clicking into gear recently – helping himself to a goal in Sunderland's New Year's Day win over Preston North End – McAtee could give the Ukrainian striker some much-needed competition up top and even displace the 25-year-old over time.

Former Charlton loanee Mason Burstow.

This would see ex-Charlton youngster Burstow fall even further down the pecking order at the Stadium of Light, Beale needing to be cut-throat and show that he's not settling for average performances.

If Sunderland don't want to be completely left behind in the ongoing promotion race, Beale will need to take action soon and signing McAtee would show intent from the Black Cats boss despite Burstow being cut adrift in the process.

Somerset fly high as Jack Leach, Jamie Overton round up Nottinghamshire

Division One leaders claim seventh win of campaign as Azhar Ali digs them out of trouble before bowlers take over

If Nottinghamshire supporters ever need a new badge, they might consider Edvard Munch’s painting “The Scream”. It has sod all to do with cricket but it perfectly represents their current state of mind. However, one can scream in delight as well as fear so such an outburst also captures the mood of younger fans at Taunton. It certainly matched the emotions of Somerset’s cricketers just after six o’clock on this third evening when Jamie Overton sent Jake Ball’s off stump spinning to complete his county’s seventh win in nine games this season. In truth, it was tempting to pity Nottinghamshire as this match hurtled towards a climax which saw eight wickets fall after tea on what proved to be its final day. Steven Mullaney’s team played some decent cricket and when Somerset were 115 for 8 just after lunch, it was possible to see the visitors chasing down a target which then stood at 200.But Tom Abell’s side have acquired the knack of posting good totals, albeit by unorthodox means, and the ninth-wicket stand of 51 between Overton and Azhar Ali took the game beyond Nottinghamshire’s insecure batsmen, especially on a pitch helping the spinners. Azhar finished unbeaten on 65 while Overton’s 24 was a short innings which exhibited immense common sense in choosing which balls to attack. All this was rather in contrast to the morning session in which Somerset had collapsed to the spin of R Ashwin, one of the best twirlers in the world, and Liam Patterson-White, a 20-year-old debutant who had been ill on the first day on this game, made nought on the second, took five wickets on the third and ended it with Jamie Overton threatening his cerebellum with a cricket ball travelling at well over 80mph. I told you it gets better, Liam. Welcome to the show that ends only with autumn’s gentle beauty.None of which should make us underestimate the panic pullulating through the County Ground as Ashwin and Patterson-White ran amok. When Steven Davies was leg before to Ashwin’s drifter just before lunch Somerset were 94 for 6 and in some trouble. Yet for their supporters, no strangers to such alarums, this was only the latest reverse of a poor session. And so perhaps it is some variety of providence that ensures many cricket grounds are blessed with wonderful views. When Somerset collapsed on this blue morning at Taunton spectators in the upper stands could gaze on distant hills where a tablecloth of oatmeal and shy greens might have given them a moment of peace. Before long, though, the twin duties of love and loyalty caused them to lower their gaze and they saw James Hildreth caught at the wicket off Ashwin for 7 having charged down the wicket like a galloping Clydesdale. Hildreth might have been bowled or stumped but his dismissal was only the second in a decline which saw Somerset shamble to a lead of 179 when Davies was out. The regulars on Gimblett’s Hill, a coveted vantage point where only buttock recognition establishes a chap’s inalienable right to his seat, agreed this was not enough. They lunched muttering about lost opportunities. One could see their argument. Ashwin was stablished fast like a changeless decree at the Pavilion End and ended the innings with five wickets. Patterson-White match him and has kept the ball as a souvenir among a thousand other memories. The question now was whether a lead of 254 would be enough. And, of course, it was plenty. Jack Leach, having discovered the pace to bowl on this wicket, removed both Jake Libby and Ben Slater in his first three overs. Hildreth caught three fine catches at first slip, second slip and leg slip. At absolutely no stage of their innings did Mullaney’s side look like chasing down their target, although the skipper may have been unlucky to be given out caught off bat and pad when replays suggested only the latter was involved.Somerset’s bowlers had no time to care about such misfortunes. Their shrewd coach, Jason Kerr, has assembled the best squad of players in the country at the moment and if they need to be told what is needed to win titles, Jack Brooks is on hand to tell them. Notts were 35 for 3 when Tom Moores edged a lightning fast catch to Hildreth off Overton; 95 for 6 when Ashwin, having made 41 from No. 4, chipped Leach to George Bartlett at mid-on.The only question now was whether the game would finish on Tuesday or Wednesday. Overton decided he fancied a day off and bowled at a speed to move bowels. Patterson-White’s excellent adventure ended when his stumps were splattered. The extra half-hour was taken but Overton only needed an extra five minutes. Somerset lead the table by 15 points but have a tough test to come against Yorkshire next week.Yet Abell’s men have the wind at their backs. It has been the summer of “Blackbird” and of Tom Banton; the summer of golden combes and George Bartlett; the summer of “Do It For Tres” and Lewis Gregory. If things carry on like this, can you imagine what September will be like in Taunton? Oh my lovely, can you just imagine it!

Hamilton Masakadza hints at dressing-room rift in letter to sports minister

Masakadza follows women’s captain Mary-Anne Musonda in writing to Kirsty Coventry about the human costs of Zimbabwe’s suspension

Liam Brickhill27-Jul-2019

AFP

Zimbabwe captain Hamilton Masakadza has written to sports minister Kirsty Coventry to ask for “urgent intervention” after Zimbabwe Cricket’s suspension by the ICC. Masakadza’s letter follows similar communication from women’s captain Mary-Anne Musonda, who had asked the minister to step in and resolve the apparent impasse between Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) and the Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC).While it was the ICC’s perception of government interference that initially lead to Zimbabwe’s suspension, the leaders of both senior national teams have openly called for the government to step in directly to resolve the situation. The ICC has ruled that the “unconditional” reinstatement of ousted chairman Tavengwa Mukuhlani’s board is required to end the suspension, and both Masakadza and Musonda have thrown their weight behind this solution.”It is important to note that ICC, as the world cricket governing body, has made its ruling and at this stage it is pointless to argue whether they were right or not,” Masakadza wrote in a letter addressed to Coventry.”We implore you to get the SRC to give the game a chance and reinstate the recently-elected ZC board,” Musonda had written in her letter to Coventry. “Police action, anti-corruption action all that can always be done while we are playing and those found on the wrong side can then be arrested. As for now only one decision needs to be made: reinstatement.”The captains’ letters follow the statement from the SRC earlier this week, in which it insisted that it was up to ZC to ensure an end to the suspension, and that “SRC and the interim committee are not required to do anything” in terms of the ICC’s directive.”The SRC expresses its total confidence in the ability and willingness of the suspended Board members of ZC in ensuring for an outcome that is in the best interests of Zimbabwe’s cricket, particularly the players themselves, in the shortest time possible,” SRC’s statement had said, leaving the situation deadlocked as it placed responsibility for action on Mukuhlani and his board.Masakadza detailed the “catastrophic” effects of Zimbabwe’s suspension, emphasising the human cost of the sanctioning and warning of the dire consequences for cricket in the country should Zimbabwe not comply with the ICC’s directive. He also bemoaned the power struggle that has put Zimbabwe in this position, and hinted at a rift within the national team.”At this stage the whole issue has regrettably been reduced to a contest of who has the strongest argument or who has the power, when what is at stake are human lives and the very future of the game.”I wish to have it on record that our meeting last week was the first official communication by the Zimbabwe senior men’s team since the suspension of the ZC board by the SRC. I am doing this because it has come to my attention that there are some players who have been making statements saying they are speaking on behalf of the team. Their actions are divisive and in fact compromised change-room harmony during our tour of Netherlands and Ireland,” he wrote.Masakadza added that he would like to “dissociate the team from the actions of those players who were seen at the ICC meeting in London,” adding weight to a rumour that at least two players tried to talk directly to the ICC at their board meeting. While the Zimbabwean players who agreed to speak to ESPNcricinfo about Masakadza’s letter – on condition of anonymity – were united in their desire to be able to play cricket for Zimbabwe again as soon as possible, the response to the full contents of this letter was mixed. One player said that Masakadza’s comments about division did not fully represent what the squad felt, while another suggested that many were not even aware of the contents of a letter that Masakadza said was written on their behalf.Another said that whatever was in the letter, Masakadza was simply trying to act to get Zimbabwean cricket back on its feet and that many players agreed with most of the contents of the letter. Masakadza himself had not responded to ESPNcricinfo’s request for a comment on the letter at the time of publication.

Nottingham Forest already have a Worrall replacement right in front of them

Since promotion back to the Premier League in 2022, Nottingham Forest have used nine different players at centre-back with the City Ground outfit still yet to find a settled partnership.

The likes of Steve Cook, Scott McKenna and Guilian Biancone have all featured at the heart of the Reds' defence, but have all departed in recent months as the club look to cut down the large playing squad at the City Ground.

Murillo, who joined Forest from Corinthians for £15m last summer, has been ever-present at the back for the Reds since his Premier League debut against Brentford back in October last year. The 21-year-old Brazilian has started 18 league games in a row but has often featured alongside a different centre-back partner in most of his outings for the club.

Murillo

Before the ongoing African Cup of Nations, Murillo was partnered by either Moussa Niakhate or Willy Boly – with the latter missing for the last six weeks due to the tournament and a wrongful dismissal against Bournemouth.

Joe Worrall's move to Besiktas

Another player who has featured for the Reds at the back since promotion is academy graduate Joe Worrall. Since his professional debut for Forest back in 2016, the 27-year-old has gone on to make 227 appearances for his boyhood club.

After featuring 30 times in the Premier League for Forest last season, Worrall fell down the pecking order under former boss Steve Cooper and has only featured twice under new head coach Nuno Espírito Santo.

The defender was linked with a move away from the City Ground during the January window – with Leeds United and Sheffield United both interested in taking the former Rangers loanee on loan for the remainder of the campaign.

Worrall remained at the City Ground upon the closure of the British window on February 1st but secured a move-away to join Turkish side Besiktas on a deal until the end of the season, with an option to make the move permanent in the summer.

The 27-year-old's departure coupled with Niakhate and Boly's absence due to AFCON has given one member of the Forest playing squad a valuable opportunity to cement his place as a regular starter under Nuno.

Nottingham Forest's readymade Worrall replacement

In recent weeks, Andrew Omobamidele has been handed a run of games at centre-back alongside the ever-present Murillo. Despite joining from Norwich City for £11m on deadline day in the summer, the 21-year-old Irishman was overlooked by Cooper and only made his debut in the FA Cup replay against Blackpool on January 17th.

Following his debut, the former Norwich man had played every minute for Nuno – prior to dropping to the bench in the defeat to Newcastle United – proving himself to be a more than capable centre-back partner for Murillo.

When comparing Omobamidele to Worrall this season, it is clear that the 21-year-old is much more comfortable on the ball – a characteristic Nuno wants in his centre-back when building from the back.

Worrall only averages 40 passes completed per 90 this season, whilst the Irishman Omobamidele averages 22 more with his tally of 62 – as per FBref. However, it's not just passes completed that the Reds' new defender trumps Worrall in, with Omobamidele also completing 8% more of the passes he's attempted this campaign.

Omobamidele likes to drive forward with the ball – a lot more than Worrall, with the 21-year-old completing 1.1 progressive carries per match in comparison to Worrall's lowly average of just 0.1 per 90.

In a time when young ball-playing centre-backs are hard to come by, the club have conducted brilliant business in the market with Omobamidele and Murillo having the potential to be the Reds' long-term solution at the back.

Gloucestershire claim rain-affected win despite Sam Curran defiance

Surrey were beaten by nine runs by Gloucestershire on Duckworth-Lewis-Stern calculations, suffering their sixth defeat in eight Vitality Blast outings this season, when a rain delay left them needing to score 52 from another 4.1 overs at the Kia Oval. They managed 42 of them, taking their total of 52 for 2 from 7.5 overs when the rain came, in reply to Gloucestershire’s 165 for 8, to an eventual 94 for 2. When they were left needing 25 from the last over, however, the game was already all but over.Sam Curran swung Benny Howell for six and Andrew Tye for two more maximums in the final over to reach a defiant 51 not out from 35 balls, while Ollie Pope finished on an unbeaten 13.But Howell, fellow medium-pacer Ryan Higgins and fast bowler Tye – who between them sent down the 25 balls after the restart – kept their cool despite understandably greasy conditions to earn Gloucestershire a third win of the T20 campaign and keep them in contention for quarter-final qualification from the South Group.Gloucestershire’s 20-over total was built on a 15-ball 30 up front from Miles Hammond, James Bracey’s 25-ball 33 and 40 from 28 balls from Ian Cockbain in the middle overs, and then a useful 22 not out at the end by Jack Taylor, from 12 balls and with four well-struck fours.Surrey suffered two early blows when Aaron Finch, their big-hitting Australian opener, edged a rising ball from Chris Liddle to keeper Bracey to depart for 12 to the last ball of the fourth over, and Will Jacks was caught at extra cover off a leading edge for 15 in slow left-armer Tom Smith’s first over. From 42 for 2 much depended for Surrey on the youthful third wicket pair of Curran and Pope, but they had only added ten runs when rain arrived at 8.35pm to drive the players off, with one ball of the eighth over remaining. When play was able to resume, at 9.30pm, the pair faced an almost impossible task.Gloucestershire, who won the toss, reached 48 for 1 in their initial six-over Powerplay with most of those runs coming from opener Hammond who struck Imran Tahir for two fours in the opening over, took two leg-side fours off Sam Curran in the third over and then lofted brother Tom over long-on for six in the next over. When Hammond’s violent cameo ended with a carve to deep cover off Jade Dernbach, it was left to Bracey to join Michael Klinger and add 24 for the second wicket before the Gloucestershire captain top-edged a pull at Sam Curran to deep square leg to go for 12.Bracey played some fine shots as Gloucestershire made it to 82 for 2 at the halfway point, but he was caught at long-on off Sam Curran in the 12th over and the visitors needed a busy 17 from Higgins for forward momentum until Cockbain took two straight fours and three twos off the 16th over, bowled by Dernbach and costing 15.Cockbain then swung South Africa legspinner Tahir for a massive six over midwicket but, later in the same over, perished to a catch at long-on and Howell, Tye and Smith all fell in the frenetic final overs as only Taylor’s judicious late hitting – when he could get the strike – enabled Gloucestershire to post a competitive total.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe ready to make Man Utd bid for defensive "monster"

Sir Jim Ratcliffe is reportedly ready for Manchester United to make a bid for a defensive "monster" in the summer transfer window, with his current club said to be panicking about his exit.

Man Utd transfer news

For the first time in a while, it does feel as though there is genuine reason for positivity both on and off the pitch at Old Trafford, following years of frustration.

Sunday's 2-1 win away to Luton Town was another step in the right direction in the Premier League, as Erik ten Hag's side push for a Champions League place this season, while the situation surrounding Ratcliffe's 25% acquisition of the club is going from strength to strength.

His investment has now been approved, which is fantastic news, and the boyhood United fan is looking to make his presence felt immediately, aiming to bring in Newcastle United sporting director Dan Ashworth ahead of next season.

The 52-year-old has been put on gardening leave by the Magpies, and it is now a case of whether the Red Devils are willing to pay the £20m compensation fee to bring him in before 2026 or wait for two years.

Away from the Ashworth situation, United also continue to be linked with new signings, with Benfica's highly-rated young midfielder Joao Neves considered a possible addition come the end of the current campaign. Bayern Munich teenager Mathys Tel has also been linked with a move but is weighing up his future.

Man Utd ready to make bid for Gleison Bremer

According to Gazzetta dello Sport [via Sport Witness], Manchester United are "willing" to table an offer for Juventus defender Gleison Bremer, with the report stating that "the sirens are coming" from Old Trafford.

Juventus' Gleison Bremer

He has been "identified" as a "fundamental reinforcement", with the Red Devils "willing to put on the table an offer" that "cannot be refused". Juve are already believed to eyeing replacements for the Brazilian, with alarm bells ringing in Turin over the likelihood of a United bid.

Bremer could be such an exciting signing at Old Trafford this summer, during a transfer window in which defensive reinforcements are essential. Raphael Varane arguably isn't the force he used to be, not to mention picking up injuries too often, while Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof also aren't the answer alongside undoubted key man Lisandro Martinez.

Bremer could be seen as the Argentine's natural long-term partner at the heart of the defence, having made an impressive average of four clearances per game in Serie A this season, across a total of 24 starts in the competition. Meanwhile, data analyst Ben Mattinson has hailed him as a "monster", such is his dominance at centre-back.

Still only 26, the Juve ace shouldn't drift past his peak for some time yet, and if United could acquire his signature, as well as strengthen in other important areas, things will look positive ahead of next season.

Chris Morris, Kyle Abbott seal win for Hampshire over Middlesex
