Gloucestershire 87 for 4 (Barnard 3-16) trail Worcestershire 221 (Wessels 72, Higgins 4-55) by 134 runs
Only Leicestershire have endured a longer exile from county cricket’s first division than two of the contenders for promotion this year. Gloucestershire and Glamorgan were both relegated in 2005, the last season of three up and three down before it was decided that the clubs in the upper tier should feel a little more secure. The converse of that has been an increased degree of difficulty for the teams trying to make the transition in the opposite direction. Clearly, the change has disadvantaged this trio in particular, in which case Gloucestershire, in third place going into the final two rounds, will feel they ought not to miss the opportunity. They meet second-placed Northamptonshire at Bristol next week, which might yet have one promotion place riding on it depending on how the table looks in a few days. Win this one first, however, with Northamptonshire and another contender, Durham, locking horns at Wantage Road, and the prize could be within touching distance.Momentum is said to count for a good deal at this stage of the season and although they were beaten by Sussex last week, Gloucestershire had won three matches in a row before that one. They defeated Worcestershire by 13 runs in a thrilling finish at Cheltenham in July, a result which ended any lingering hope that Worcestershire themselves might still sneak into the race.Yet after an opening day largely dominated by seamers under a cloudy sky, Gloucestershire had control for a while only to have it taken from them in a difficult final session in which Ed Barnard undermined them three times by taking wickets with the last ball of an over. Any optimistic notions entertained in the visitors’ dressing room that the home side might have been distracted in their anticipation of defending their Vitality Blast crown at Edgbaston on Saturday, a date that Gloucestershire had pencilled into their diary before Derbyshire surprised them in the quarter-final at Bristol, proved without foundation.Gloucestershire’s bowlers had given them the upper hand in the first session, delayed by one hour after a damp morning, to the extent that when Ben Cox was out four overs after lunch, falling to the second of two fine catches by Tom Smith at third slip, Worcestershire were 71 for 5. Ryan Higgins, the allrounder whose runs and wickets are a large element of why his side are in contention, had taken three, going round the wicket to pin the left-handed Hamish Rutherford leg before and two balls later bringing one back sharply to bowl Alex Milton, who shouldered arms.Without Moeen Ali, taking time out to nurse some minor “niggles” ahead of Saturday, Worcestershire’s often fragile batting appeared in danger of caving in rather rapidly. That they did not was down to Riki Wessels, whose approach to batting is consistently to attack. It comes off less frequently in the red-ball game than it did in white-ball cricket in his pomp but on this occasion it did, bringing him a 58-ball half-century and 72 off 89 deliveries before, attempting the reprise the slog-sweep that had brought him six off Higgins earlier, he found Ben Charlesworth on the square-leg boundary. After a brief experiment opening, Wessels is back in the middle order and looks more comfortable there. His sixth-wicket partnership with Barnard (30) gave the innings some substance. With the game evolving quickly, Gloucestershire had their three bowling points – their first objective – in the 48th over, but Joe Leach and Adam Finch built on the impetus provided by Wessels enough to ensure it was the basis of a genuine recovery. Higgins, with 4 for 55, had been Worcestershire’s most dangerous opponent with the ball. Shannon Gabriel, the West Indian Test fast bowler brought in for the final push, proved as ineffective as he had against Sussex. The downside for Gloucestershire of bowling the home side out by tea was two hours of batting in light that did not really brighten until the last throes. James Bracey and Chris Dent weathered the new-ball threat but when Barnard came into the attack as first change, he immediately broke through as Bracey was caught behind and Dent edged to third slip.Mitchell took his first Championship wicket of the season by having Smith leg before and Barnard combined again with Cox to leave Gloucestershire four down for 56, before Gareth Roderick and Charlesworth survived until the close.Umpire Nick Cook, who was suffering from a sore knee, was replaced by Mike Burns mid-way through the afternoon session.

    WHAT HAPPENED?

Earlier this week, Belgium posted a video on social media of Onana along with Belgian comedian Pablo Andres. In the video, the Everton midfielder was spotted insinuating that he would 'tackle Mbappe in the shin' during Belgium's clash with France. Belgium quickly deleted the video and issued an apology, however, the Real Madrid star has now fired back at Onana.

  • WHAT MBAPPE SAID

When asked by the media if he would swap shirts with Onana, Mbappe said: "Who?”

The Belgian reporter clarified again: "Amadou Onana, our midfielder."

Mbappe then realised what the question was regarding and said: "Oh okay, I heard something about it. You know, a lot of people talk about me – I have no problem with that. If Onana wants my shirt after the match, he can have it."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

France and Belgium haven't shown the levels that were expected of them in the group stages of the Euros in Germany. However, they will both hope to change that when they face off against each other in the last-16 clash. Mbappe personally will be hoping to return to form after an average display against Poland in the final group game.

Arsenal may have let £20m outcast leave the Emirates way too soon

Arsenal have conducted some brilliant business in recent years, with Mikel Arteta rebuilding the squad, allowing them to challenge for a first Premier League title since the invincible campaign of 2003/04.

The board have backed the Spaniard heavily in recent campaigns, with the club spending upwards of £200m alone so far this season – with the likes of Declan Rice and Kai Havertz arriving at the Emirates.

The investment has allowed the Gunners to challenge the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool for the title, with Arteta's side currently five points off the summit, with a game in hand.

Players such as Gabriel, William Saliba and Ben White have all impressed for the Gunners, with the club currently having the best defensive record in the division.

However, the club sold a player back in 2020 that could've bolstered their already impressive defensive record even further.

Emiliano Martínez's stats at Arsenal

Emiliano Martínez joined Arsenal as a youngster from Argentinian side Independiente back in 2009, with the goalkeeper originally signing a youth contract.

He was handed a first-team deal in 2010 as an 18-year-old, before enjoying multiple loan spells up and down the Football League.

The Argentinian had three loan stints in the space of three years, joining Oxford United, Sheffield Wednesday and Rotherham United – making 20 appearances over the three seasons.

He also had three more loan spells during his time at Arsenal, with Martinez joining Wolves, Getafe and Reading before 2019 where he had his breakthrough for the Gunners.

An injury to Bernd Leno saw the 'keeper be handed his first-team chance against Brighton during the 2019/20 campaign. Martinez took his opportunity with both hands, starting in the FA Cup final against Chelsea – making crucial saves and allowing the Gunners to claim their 14th FA Cup.

Despite the 6 foot 5 stopper's impressive form, he was replaced upon Leno's return from injury, with Martinez leaving the club in the hunt for consistent first-team minutes.

Emiliano Martínez's stats since leaving Arsenal

Since leaving the Emirates in 2020 to join Aston Villa for £20m, Martinez has made 146 appearances for the club, keeping 49 clean sheets as he helps Unai Emery's side push for a Champions League spot.

However, his biggest success since leaving the Gunners didn't come at Villa. The goalkeeper played a crucial role in Argentina's World Cup triumph in 2022, with the 31-year-old making a key save in the penalty shootout victory over France in the final.

His performances not only won Argentina the tournament for a third time, but also the Goalkeeper of the Tournament award after keeping three clean sheets on the way to the victory.

His subsequent form over the last couple of years since his departure from Arsenal, Martinez has seen his market value soar to £26m, as per Football Transfers. Interestingly, that's £4m more than current Gunners number one David Raya who has been the topic of much debate since arriving in north London.

Although Raya has demonstrated his qualities in recent months, the club could've saved a lot of money by putting trust in Martinez, with the Argentinian now up there with some of the best 'keepers in world football.

Manchester United ready to poach another Premier League backroom staff star

Manchester United are braced for yet more changes above Erik ten Hag as INEOS group and Sir Jim Ratcliffe continue their overhaul of the club.

Derby defeat hammers home the job on Ratcliffe's hands

As Sunday's Premier League derby day drubbing demonstrated, Manchester United are miles away from where they want to be. The Red Devils have floundered around the edge of the European places all season in what has been a trying year for Erik ten Hag.

Finishing bottom of their Champions League group, they sit a massive 11 points outside the top four and look likely to be missing out on Champions League football again this season barring a drastic turnaround. Though there have been injuries aplenty, there are a large majority who believe it is a matter of when, not if, Ten Hag is shown the exit door in the north west.

While on-field performances may be stagnating, there has been progress off it. Ratcliffe took charge officially in February after agreeing to buy a minority stake in the club at the end of 2023. He has wasted no time since. Already the club have added Omar Berrada from rivals Manchester City, with the Moroccan arriving at the end of the season to take on the CEO role at the club.

They are also believed to be finalising a deal for Dan Ashworth, with the Newcastle United sporting director having been placed on gardening leave by the Magpies as a deal looks to be agreed, though there is a steep £20m asking price involved.

Man Utd sporting director target Dan Ashworth watches on.

Ashworth would overhaul a dated transfer policy at Old Trafford, having already had success at Brighton and more recently at St James' Park. There is hope that his presence would prevent deals such as that for Antony being completed in the future.

Another Premier League appointment in sight

Now, the off-the-field overhaul is set to continue, with Dougie Freedman being lined up to become the Red Devils' new head of recruitment, where he would work in tandem with Ashworth over transfer business.

Currently Sporting Director at Crystal Palace, United are "expected to make an official approach" for the Scot in the coming days, with the club keen to have their infrastructure in place before the end of the campaign.

Having helped overhaul Palace in the previous five years, Freedman was 'instrumental' in the arrivals of the likes of Marc Guehi, Eberechi Eze and Michael Olise. It is added that he is 'open' to the idea of making the switch to Old Trafford from South London, meaning that should Palace allow him to depart, a deal could be completed very soon.

Arteta’s "forgotten" man has cost Arsenal over £17m since joining

Arsenal look to be back on track following their fifth Premier League win on the bounce away to Burnley.

Mikel Arteta has guided his side out of their festive period slump and right back into this season's title race courtesy of a frontline who now seem well and truly back to their best.

The club have found themselves in this position after a few years of generally clever and successful signings, with the likes of Martin Odegaard, Ben White, and Declan Rice having been solid additions.

However, while the North Londoners have been effective in recent transfer windows, there is one player who joined for free in 2020 who really should've been moved on by now.

An underwhelming loan move

In January 2020, Arteta needed cover at right-back following injuries to Hector Bellerin and Calum Chambers, so instead of spending more than the club would've liked on a pricey permanent deal, he opted to sign Cedric Soares on a six-month loan deal.

The Southampton full-back had been a reliable Premier League defender for a few seasons at that point, and with his contract set to expire in the summer, it made perfect sense to bring him in as cover.

However, in a situation reminiscent of the loan move for Swedish international Kim Kallstrom in 2014, Soares arrived at Arsenal with a knee injury and remained out of action for 41 days, missing 11 games in that period.

He ultimately made his debut for the team in the 32nd game of the season, although he would make just four more appearances for the remainder of the campaign and play a grand total of 250 minutes.

Arsenal decided to sign him on a permanent deal upon the expiration of his loan, anyway, and handed him a four-year contract.

So, was it a value-for-money move?

How much Soares has cost Arsenal

Well, for the 21 weeks that he spent on loan with Arsenal in the second half of the 2019/20 season, he was reportedly on a wage of £65,000-a-week, which would've been paid by the Gunners at a cost of around £1.3m.

Upon signing for the club officially in July 2020, his pay increased to £75,000-a-week, which, when taking into account the 21 weeks he spent on loan at Fulham last season – who paid his wages – means that the Gunners have paid out an additional £13.8m in wages since Soares became a permanent figure.

Therefore, if you exclude half of his bonus from last season for the time he spent at Craven Cottage and refrain from adding his final bonus for this year, Arsenal have spent around a whopping £17m on Cedric since he joined.

However, once his contract is completed, with his final bonus and 19 weeks of wages paid, he will have cost the Gunners around £20m, and while he has not been dreadful, it would be hard to argue that he's been anything like value for money either.

In total, Soares has made just 63 appearances for Arsenal during his four years at the club, which equates to about £270k a game, and unless he plays again before his deal expires in the summer, he'll leave N5 having cost the club about £317k for each appearance, which, for a defender who "scared the life out of" club legend Tony Adams with his performance against Manchester United in 2022, is hardly a great deal.

Ultimately, the "forgotten" full-back, as described by journalist Paul Brown, will not make it into the list of the ten worst signings in Arsenal history – he'd have to do something spectacular for that – but for the money the Gunners spent over the four years, it is hard to say he's been anything other than disappointing.

Quietly effective Tottenham star praised after flying under the radar

A "quietly effective" Tottenham star has been praised for "flying under the radar" this season, as Ange Postecoglou's side also take a gigantic stride towards potential Champions League qualification.

Tottenham thrash Aston Villa 4-0

Postecoglou's men were forced to battle hard in the first half, with neither side really dominating proceedings as Spurs went into the second period with it all to play for.

However, it was the north London travellers who eventually seized that game by the scruff of its neck. Two quick-fire goals right after the restart from James Maddison and Brennan Johnson, both from swift counter-attacks handed Tottenham total control of the contest.

It was easy work for Spurs from that point onwards, especially after Villa captain John McGinn was sent off midway through the half. Son Heung-min and Timo Werner rounded off a memorable afternoon in added time, with this 4-0 win potentially proving a season-defining one.

"That was the message at half-time — just persevere, stay calm, play our football, maintain our intensity," said Postecoglou after Tottenham's win over Villa.

"And we did, we got off to a flier and then the quality of our football was excellent to see out the game. I said before the game that I still think there's a significant part of the season to go. There's still 11 games for us anyway. There's so many challenging games and every game will have meaning between now and the end of the year. Not just for us, for every team.

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou.

"If we had lost today, I don't think that would have discounted us from whatever other people put on as targets for us. I've been consistently saying what's important for me is our growth as a team and I thought we saw that today. It was another positive step forward."

Spurs now prepare for a crucial fixture list ahead, but defender Ryan Sessegnon will be out for rest of the season and unable to contribute. Certain members of Postecoglou's squad will be far more important in the run-in, though, like winger Dejan Kulusevski.

Kulusevski praised for "flying under the radar" at Tottenham

Speaking to Tottenham News, pundit John Wenham has heaped praise on Kulusevski for "flying under the radar" this season.

“Kulusevski is flying under the radar a bit, but he is having a quietly effective season. His goal against Wolves was his sixth in the Premier League this year, which is already triple the total of two he got across the entire 2022/23 Premier League campaign.

Dejan Kulusevski celebrates for Tottenham.

“He’s really improved his output. He’s normally the player who gets the assist for the assist, but he is scoring more now, which is good to see.”

The Sweden international has been a mainstay for Postecoglou, scoring six goals and bagging three assists in 25 league appearances. His good form lately will be a boost for Spurs, as their popular head coach looks to round off an excellent debut campaign with European qualification.

Khawaja makes early statement with century

Usman Khawaja made a commanding start to his season with 138 off 126 balls as Queensland secured a handsome bonus-point victory over Victoria in Melbourne.Khawaja and the in-form Sam Heazlett added 185 for the first wicket in pristine batting conditions although the Queensland innings was hauled back from 1 for 239 in 36th over to 9 for 322 as James Pattinson claimed 3 for 56 in his first outing of the season. However, Victoria’s top order was blown away in the chase as they slid to 5 for 37 in the 14th over with Mark Steketee picking up the impressive trio of Will Pucovski, Peter Handscomb and Nic Maddinson for single figures.Bat dominated for the first part of the game as Khawaja and Heazlett laid into the Victoria attack. It was Khawaja’s first innings of the season after the Ashes series in which he was dropped and he looked in excellent touch as he struck 16 fours and a six with his century coming off 94 deliveries. There was some collateral damage during the opening stand when a strong sweep shot by Heazlett struck umpire John Ward on the foot at square leg. Initially Ward tried to shake it off but a short while later needed to leave the field with TV umpire Donovan Koch taking his place. With Heazlett on track for a brisk century, to follow his half-centuries in Queensland’s opening two matches, he edged a drive against Pattinson to give Victoria their first opening. Marnus Labuschagne started in fine style, timing the ball effortlessly, before getting a rough decision when he was given out caught off the arm playing a reverse sweep.Matt Renshaw picked out long-on cheaply and when Khawaja departed the middle order couldn’t quite take advantage of the foundation offered. The total was soon looking huge, however, with Marcus Harris being caught behind off the third all of the innings then Steketee scythed through the middle order. Ben Cutting, playing his first one-day match for nearly two years, added the wicket of Glenn Maxwell and Victoria’s hopes were gone.Aaron Finch and Will Sutherland stopped the rot before Finch become Steketee’s fourth. From 8 for 106, Sutherland’s second half-century in consecutive innings prevented Queensland claiming a double bonus-point victory, which would have been theirs by keeping Victoria below 160, so that was a small consolation for the home side.

Chelsea have had a shocker on 23y/o who earns more than Caicedo

Chelsea have not been afraid to make a signing or two since the takeover of Todd Boehly in May 2022, as they have splashed the cash on a host of new additions.

The new Blues owner has spent over £1bn on transfers as they aim to close the gap to the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool to fight for a first Premier League title since the 2016/2017 season.

Players such as Enzo Fernández and Moises Caicedo have both joined the Blues for fees, breaking the English transfer record – with the latter joining for £115m from Brighton and Hove Albion in the summer of 2023.

Chelsea midfielder Moises Caicedo

It would be harsh to question Boehly's ambition with his spending since the takeover. However, one thing that can be questioned is the erratic nature of the spending – with many players failing to match up with the hefty fees spent on them.

Mykhalio Mudryk and Roméo Lavia both joined the club for fees combining nearly £150m, with the pair unable to yet to properly showcase their talent with limited minutes and injuries affecting their start to life at Stamford Bridge.

Despite Mudryk and Lavia's unsuccessful time at the club so far, another player has failed to live up to expectations after his big-money move to Stamford Bridge back in 2022.

Wesley Fofana's record at Chelsea

During his nearly two-year stint at Stamford Bridge, 23-year-old centre-back Wesley Fofana has only made 20 appearances for the club, after multiple injury struggles.

He made his debut in the 2-1 win against West Ham United back in September 2022, before suffering a knee injury in his second outing against Crystal Palace.

The Frenchman was out until February, with Fofana making his return during the 1-0 defeat at home to Southampton. He enjoyed a good run in the Blues side before the end of the 2022/23 campaign, before another injury setback during pre-season back in August.

Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana.

He didn't travel with the squad for the pre-season tour in the USA, as he underwent surgery on his ruptured ACL.

Fofana hasn't featured at all this campaign, with the defender still recovering from his latest injury setback. Boss Mauricio Pochettino has confirmed that the 23-year-old won't feature between now and the end of the season, with the former Leicester City defender working to return ahead of the start of the 2024/25 season in August.

How much Wesley Fofana has cost Chelsea

The club brought Fofana from Leicester for a fee in the region of £75m back in August 2022 – with Fofana penning a seven-year deal at Stamford Bridge.

23-year-old Fofana currently earns £200k-per-week – a figure that is £25k-per-week more than Levi Colwill and Cole Palmer combined, with the defender the third-highest-paid player in the Chelsea squad and his wages contributing to a whopping 6.8% of the club's total wage bill.

Fofana's weekly wage of £200k-p/w, sees him take home £10.4m every season, with the Frenchman set to earn another £62.4m should he finish the remaining six years on his current deal, and that is £50k more per week than Caicedo (£150k-per-week) earns.

Although he joined the club with real potential, the centre-back, unfortunately, hasn't hit the levels expected due to injury, with the 23-year-old's market value taking a huge hit, with Fofana now only valued at £30m – a decrease of 60% on the figure the club paid for him less than two years ago.

Whilst you could argue that it is harsh to blame Chelsea for his injury issues, Fofana missed a staggering 72 matches through injury during his time with Leicester, which shows that the warning signs were there.

Therefore, Boehly and the Blues had a shocker with the signing of the injury-prone defender, who has been far from value for money – given that he earns £50k more per week than Caicedo, who has already played 34 games for the club – 14 more than Fofana in 12 fewer months.

Chamari Atapattu onslaught will lead to rethink for Australia

Beth Mooney praised the innings of Sri Lanka’s captain but believed Australia came through the pressure well

Andrew McGlashan29-Sep-2019It is not quite back to the drawing board for Australia, but they will be forced to rethink their plans to Chamari Atapattu after Sri Lanka’s T20I captain struck a magnificent century at North Sydney Oval to put their attack under a type of onslaught they have not felt for a while.Defending a score of 4 for 217 – based around Beth Mooney’s own outstanding hundred – there was never the spectre of defeat looming over Australia, even as Atapattu regularly deposited balls into the stands, but the celebration from Megan Schutt when she finally got a yorker through in the closing stages suggested Australia were feeling the pressure after a West Indies tour where they were rarely tested.A quick turnaround in the series, with the second match following on Monday evening under lights, doesn’t give much time to assess plans but Atapattu will be a clear focus in the debrief.”She’s a clean striker of the ball and can take the game away from the opposition, which she has done pretty often in the past and has done against us before,” Mooney said. “So we’ll have to have a sit down and rethink our plans against her, but she was very impressive.”

Atapattu had a day out… but in terms of what we are trying to do in terms of getting better and being the greatest team ever, it’s making sure we win games like that now rather than losing themBeth Mooney

Though Australia continue to raise the bar in the women’s game, with the T20 World Cup five months away it may serve them well to be put in situations where their resolve is tested although Mooney said the response to Atapattu’s innings showed what they have learned over the last couple of years.”It’s been well documented that it’s happened to us a few times, Atapattu has done it to us, Harmanpreet Kaur did it to us the semi-final at the World Cup, and we sat down and had a rethink about what we were trying to do,” Mooney said. “Credit where credit is due, Atapattu had a day out. Unfortunately, she couldn’t get her team over the line but in terms of what we are trying to do in terms of getting better and being the greatest team ever, it’s making sure we win games like that now rather than losing them. We pegged her back pretty nicely and got her wicket at a crucial stage. In the past we haven’t been able to do that so I think it was a pretty good effort in the end.”While the context around Atapattu’s hundred – the first by a Sri Lanka player in women’s T20Is and coming against the best team in the world – grabbed the attention in the second half of the game, Mooney’s hundred was a masterclass of T20 batting as well, coming off 54 balls. Her career-best 117 against England in 2017 came in a defeat as Danni Wyatt also reached three-figures, and Mooney joked that she had been reminded that she wasn’t allowed to score hundreds on her own, but after missing out a couple of times against West Indies recently she was thrilled to make it count.”The coaches joked with me when I walked off about how I felt and I said, ‘yeah, some good, some bad’ that’s my general response, but you’d take a hundred at the start of the day. I’m pretty happy with how I’ve been hitting the ball, it probably just hasn’t come off as I would have liked in the previous few games but nice to be scoring runs again.”
