Mumbai Indians look stronger, but it's coming together for Sunrisers Hyderabad too

There’s been no official word on the fitness status of either Nathan Coulter-Nile or Bhuvneshwar Kumar

Should Mumbai pick Lynn in Sharjah?

Big pictureTwo teams with two wins each from four games. But that’s where the similarities between the Mumbai Indians and the Sunrisers Hyderabad end.The Mumbai Indians have reached here by bludgeoning the Kolkata Knight Riders and the Kings XI Punjab, while the Sunrisers had to use every last ounce of resolve against the Delhi Capitals and the Chennai Super Kings to script their two wins. The Mumbai Indians have two of the fiercest finishers in Kieron Pollard and Hardik Pandya, while the Sunrisers rely on the young, inexperienced trio of Priyam Garg, Abhishek Sharma and Abdul Samad to close out their innings. In three out of their four games, the Mumbai Indians have posted totals in excess of 190, while the highest the Sunrisers have managed so far is 164. The Mumbai Indians have a superior bowling attack too.All that means that the Mumbai Indians start as favourites when the two teams meet on Sunday afternoon in Sharjah – the first time there for either team this season. But with two back-to-back wins, the Sunrisers will also have their tails up. The presence of Kane Williamson at No. 4, and runs from Garg and Abhishek in their last game against the Super Kings should give David Warner and Jonny Bairstow the confidence to play attacking cricket at the top, something they must aim for given the shorter boundaries in Sharjah. In the news It’s still not clear if Nathan Coulter-Nile has recovered from his side strain, which has kept him out of the tournament so far. But even if he is fit, the Mumbai Indians may go with an unchanged XI, with Trent Boult and James Pattinson both in the mix. Bhuvneshwar Kumar limped off the field after hurting his thigh against the Super Kings. The details of the injury are not yet known but if he fails to recover in time, the Sunrisers have the option of bringing in Sandeep Sharma.Priyam Garg and Abhishek Sharma put on a game-changing partnership against Chennai Super Kings•BCCILikely XIsMumbai Indians: 1 Quinton de Kock (wk), 2 Rohit Sharma (capt), 3 Suryakumar Yadav, 4 Ishan Kishan, 5 Kieron Pollard, 6 Hardik Pandya, 7 Krunal Pandya, 8 James Pattinson, 9 Rahul Chahar, 10 Trent Boult, 11 Jasprit BumrahSunrisers Hyderabad: 1 David Warner (capt), 2 Jonny Bairstow (wk), 3 Manish Pandey, 4 Kane Williamson, 5 Priyam Garg, 6 Abhishek Sharma, 7 Abdul Samad, 8 Rashid Khan, 9 Bhuvneshwar Kumar/Sandeep Sharma, 10 Khaleel Ahmed, 11 T NatarajanStrategy punts In T20s, Rohit Sharma has an average of 14.5 and a strike rate of 88 against Sandeep. The corresponding numbers for Suryakumar Yadav are 7.7 and 105. If Kumar isn’t available, Sandeep might not be a bad pick. The Sunrisers should save Rashid Khan’s overs for Pollard and Pandya. Pollard has managed only 63 runs off 67 balls with one dismissal against the legspinner, while Pandya’s numbers are even poorer – 16 runs off 28 balls with two dismissals.Stats that matter These two teams have faced each other 14 times in the IPL, with each side winning on seven occasions. No day T20 game has been played at Sharjah since 2018. Given the heat, whichever team wins the toss should be looking to bat first. Since IPL 2018, Kumar has missed five games for the Sunrisers – all in 2018. Surprisingly, the Sunrisers not only won four of those games, but their bowling unit also fared better in Kumar’s absence. In those five games, they had a bowling average of 17.8 and an economy of 7.2 as opposed to 28.4 and 8.1 respectively when Kumar has been in the side. Manish Pandey has scored 47 runs off 23 balls against Jasprit Bumrah without being dismissed even once. Among those who have faced at least 20 balls from Bumrah in T20s, only JP Duminy has a better strike rate (211) than Pandey’s 204. This will be Trent Boult’s 100th T20 match. For Warner, it will be his 50th time captaining the Sunrisers in the IPL. Pandey is 40 short of 3000 runs in the IPL.

Liverpool think £170,000-p/w Barca target is class ahead of potential move

Liverpool are interested in signing a "dazzling" attacking star in the summer transfer window, according to an update from journalist Graeme Bailey.

Liverpool transfer news

The Reds are about to experience a summer of huge change, with Jurgen Klopp departing as manager after nine seasons and being replaced by Feyenoord boss Arne Slot. Michael Edwards is back at the club as CEO of Football, while Richard Hughes will make the move from Bournemouth as sporting director.

Klopp will leave his successor with a hugely talented squad – one that was still in contention to win the quadruple heading into the latter part of the season, but that's not to say that some new signings aren't needed, in order to be even more of a force next season.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp

Real Madrid superstar Rodrygo is seen as an ambitious option for Liverpool this summer, with the Brazilian potentially seeing his minutes limited by the expected arrival of Kylian Mbappe from Paris Saint-Germain. He is seen as an upgrade on Luis Diaz, who has been linked with a switch to Barcelona.

In terms of a less high-profile addition, Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy has emerged as a target for the Reds, being looked at as an ideal deputy to Alisson if Caoimhin Kelleher moves on to pastures new.

Liverpool want "dazzling" attacking ace

Speaking to Rousing the Kop, Bailey said that Liverpool are huge fans of Athletic Bilbao attacker Nico Williams, but the Barca target is eyeing huge wages.

"The won’t pay him what he’s looking for at the moment. He’d be Liverpool’s highest paid player, as he would if he went to any club in England. He’s been asking for £250,000 per week plus appearance money. The English clubs who like him, and they all like him a lot, they think he’s a terrific player, but it seems as if he’s edging towards Barcelona. So, I think that’s what they’re putting it down to really.

"Will the situation change? Possibly. But at this moment in time it doesn’t look as if he’s pushing to come to England which is part of the reason for his demands. Liverpool very much like him, he’s a top winger, top performer. Liverpool were one of the ones who have done their homework on him."

Athletic Bilbao forward Nico Williams.

The £170,000-a-week Williams could be a brilliant signing by Liverpool, considering the impact he has already made during his time at Bilbao, despite still only being 21 years of age. He has made 120 appearances for his current side, registering 42 goal contributions (19 goals and 23 assists) in that time, as well as winning 14 caps for Spain.

The wide man has also been hailed as a "dazzling" player by football talent scout Jacek Kulig, and he is seen as one of the fastest players in the world, having featured in a report focusing on the quickest footballers at the 2022 World Cup.

Williams could even be looked at as a long-term replacement for the likes of Diaz and Mohamed Salah, with the Spain international capable of thriving on either flank, even if a left-sided attacking role has been his position of choice this season.

Work-in-progress Delhi Capitals and Kings XI Punjab face off with much to prove

Sunday might tell us how smartly these two teams – of three to have never won the IPL – manage their resources

Karthik Krishnaswamy19-Sep-20206:35

Will this be Delhi Capitals’ season?

Big pictureThree of the eight current IPL franchises have never won the trophy, and two of them face off at the Dubai International Stadium on Sunday. To get an idea of how desperately Delhi Capitals and Kings XI Punjab have tried to assemble a combination that could one day lift the trophy, run your eye through these names: Glenn Maxwell, R Ashwin, Mohammed Shami, Ishant Sharma, Axar Patel, Marcus Stoinis, James Neesham. They have all been part of both franchises at various points, so give yourself a pat on the back if you can say, off the top of your head, which one they currently represent.Recent results and the make-up of the two squads suggest Capitals have done a better job, so far, of forging an identity for themselves, but both teams remain incomplete in some sense, with clearly identifiable areas of strengths and weaknesses. Sunday might give us our first clues as to how smartly these two teams can manage their resources over this brave new season in a foreign land in strange times for the world at large.Likely XIsDelhi Capitals: 1 Prithvi Shaw, 2 Shikhar Dhawan, 3 Shimron Hetmyer, 4 Shreyas Iyer (capt), 5 Rishabh Pant (wk), 6 Alex Carey/Marcus Stoinis/Keemo Paul, 7 Axar Patel, 8 R Ashwin, 9 Kagiso Rabada, 10 Sandeep Lamichhane, 11 Ishant Sharma.Kings XI Punjab: 1 KL Rahul (capt & wk), 2 Mayank Agarwal, 3 Nicholas Pooran, 4 Glenn Maxwell, 5 Sarfaraz Khan, 6 Mandeep Singh/Deepak Hooda, 7 K Gowtham, 8 James Neesham/Chris Jordan/Sheldon Cottrell, 9 Ravi Bishnoi/J Suchith, 10 Mohammed Shami, 11 Mujeeb Ur Rahman.Strategy punt He’s only faced 69 balls in a 43-match IPL career to date, but the Capitals have a reason to view Harshal Patel as more than just a specialist fast bowler. During the 2019 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, Patel played the Sunil Narine role for Haryana, opening the batting and ending the tournament as its fourth-highest run-getter, with 374 at a strike rate of 165.48. Whether the Capitals are open to such a move remains to be seen, given that the bowling at IPL level is of a higher standard than some of the domestic attacks Patel tore into last year, but don’t be surprised if he’s used as a pinch-hitter at some point. Glenn Maxwell is available for selection thanks to the relaxed quarantine norms for the Australian and English players who have only just arrived in the UAE, and he’s fresh off playing one of the great counterattacking knocks in ODI cricket. Nicholas Pooran is in form and among the most dangerous T20 batsmen going around. Mujeeb Ur Rahman’s ability to tie batsmen up in the powerplay seems indispensable. Who, then, will Kings XI’s fourth overseas player be? There’s Chris Gayle to consider at the top of the order, but that would leave the bowling vulnerable, which leaves three likely candidates: Sheldon Cottrell brings his left-arm angle but not a lot of batting and not a lot of form from the CPL, Chris Jordan brings death-overs skills and late-overs hitting, and James Neesham strengthens the middle order considerably while not quite being a match for the other two with the ball. Kings XI could grapple with this debate right through the tournament. The Capitals have a similar issue in a similar position, where Marcus Stoinis (whose recent T20 successes have come at the top of the order) and Keemo Paul (a lower-order batsman rather than a genuine allrounder) are vying for the No. 6 slot alongside a wicketkeeper-batsman in Alex Carey. If Carey plays, the Capitals will be left with no sixth bowling option, with no part-time bowlers in their expected top five. Mujeeb usually bowls with the new ball, but Kings XI might want to hold him back considering his record against two of the Capitals’ middle-order batsmen. He has bowled 12 balls to Shimron Hetmyer in T20s, while dismissing him twice. Mujeeb has dismissed Rishabh Pant twice too, in 11 balls, while conceding 17 runs to him. Who takes the new ball in that case? Well, assuming Shikhar Dhawan opens, it could well be Maxwell. This is their head-to-head: 25 balls, 35 runs, two wickets. The Capitals have one of the best spin contingents in the competition, but among batsmen with at least 300 runs against that form of bowling in the IPL, Maxwell has the highest strike rate: 171. He has a superb head-to-head record against R Ashwin (107 runs off 49 balls, two dismissals), but has mixed returns against Amit Mishra, who has conceded 55 runs in 29 balls but has dismissed him four times in five meetings. If Mishra plays, expect the Capitals to bring him on as soon as Maxwell gets to the crease.Stats that matter Kings XI have tended to get off to great starts in recent IPL seasons. They won four of their first five matches in 2018, and three of their first five in 2019. The Capitals, in contrast, won only one of their first five games in 2018, and only two (one via a Super Over) in 2019. Kings XI, though, fell away rapidly in both seasons and failed to make the playoffs. Bat first or second? It’s a tricky question in Dubai, where, in 51 T20 games since the start of 2018, teams batting first have won 25 times and chasing teams 26 times. The average first-innings score at the venue across those 51 matches is 152 for 7, and the average winning first-innings score is 167 for 6. Fast bowlers (average 22.9, SR 18.0) and spinners (23.0, 20.7) have similar wicket-taking numbers in this period, but spinners (economy rate of 6.7) have been significantly more frugal than the quicks (7.6).

Romano: £30,000-p/w ace to leave club with Newcastle in free transfer talks

An "incredible" Newcastle United transfer target has informed his current club that he will be leaving this summer, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Newcastle transfer news

The Magpies are working hard on getting some important summer transfer business over the line, ahead of what could be a busy period of ins and outs at St James' Park.

Newcastle have been in talks with sealing the double signing of defensive pair Tosin Adarabioyo and Lloyd Kelly recently, with the pair expected to depart Fulham and Bournemouth on free transfers this summer respectively. Defensive additions are needed after injury woes in that area all season long, and Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles could even miss the rest of 2024 with serious knee issues.

Leicester City youngster Kasey McAteer has also emerged as a rumoured target for Eddie Howe, with the Foxes expected to be forced to sell the 22-year-old amid their financial struggles. The attacker is out of contract next summer, so now is the last chance to earn good money for him.

Then there's Aaron Ramsdale, who continues to be strongly linked with a move to St James' Pak before the start of next season. He wants to bring an end to his time at Arsenal, having warmed the substitutes' bench for much of this season, and a reunion with Howe looks like a good fit, with the pair working together at Bournemouth earlier in their careers.

"Incredible" Newcastle target leaving his club

According to Romano on X, Newcastle target Kelly has now told Bournemouth that he is leaving the club this summer, adding to the likelihood of him moving to the Magpies:

At this point, it would be a surprise if Kelly wasn't a Newcastle player by the time the opening fixture of the 2024/25 campaign rolls around. The 25-year-old's exit on a free is now no great secret, and the Magpies are seemingly focusing hard on getting a deal for him over the line.

While not necessarily the most shiny and high-profile of new signings, the £30,000-a-week defender is now an experienced Premier League player, making 54 appearances in the competition, and his ability to shine as both a centre-back and left-back is key to improved squad depth.

Bournemouth defender Lloyd Kelly.

Former Bournemouth boss Gary O'Neil has also spoken of his admiration for him in the past, hailing his performance up against Liverpool's Mohamed Salah last season: "I thought Lloyd was incredible. I think he had a 12-week ankle injury followed by a six-week calf injury. Didn't have much time in between, and then came back today having not trained much, to play left back against one of the best wingers in the world. I thought he showed everything, the potential he has to be a top defender."

Kelly could be a shrewd addition who may end up being an effective member of the defence and the fact that he would arrive on a free transfer takes away the risk element of a hefty fee being paid.

Wolves likely to bid for "monster" £30m Cunha replacement

Wolverhampton Wanderers are still sweating over Pedro Neto's future at the club but last summer's exodus has placed Molineux in a good position in regard to profit and sustainability.

This season, Gary O'Neil triumphed in instilling his philosophy in testing circumstances and tearing through the upper echelon of the Premier League to avoid relegation comfortably.

But much hinges on the owners and their investment plans this summer, with Neto and perhaps one or two others likely to sit at the heartland of transfer speculation. Moreover, compounding the problem, Old Gold supporters were left disconcerted by a steep hike in ticket pricing. A burst of positivity, it could be argued, is paramount.

Wolves boss Gary O'Neil

Luckily, O'Neil is committed to improving his first team this summer and is pushing Wolves to fight rivals for an exciting Premier League star.

Wolves eyeing Premier League star

According to reports relayed by Yorkshire Post, Wolves are one of four top-flight teams set to make bids for Arsenal's Eddie Nketiah, with Fulham – who would be willing to pay £30m for the centre-forward – Wolves and Crystal Palace also in the mix.

Arsenal are fighting to secure the signature of RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko in a £55m deal, which would surely see the Englishman's intermittent opportunities limited further.

Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah

Mikel Arteta is a big fan of the 25-year-old but will reluctantly let him leave, and with O'Neil searching for firepower up front, this might just be the perfect move to make, though Wolves would need to match Fulham's prospective offer.

Eddie Nketiah's style of play

Once described as a "monster" by journalist Aaron Catterson-Reid, Nketiah has completed 168 appearances, scoring 38 goals, for Arsenal after graduating from the youth academy, enjoying a successful but fleeting loan spell with Leeds United and even earning his first international cap for England.

This season, however, despite netting a brilliant hat-trick against Sheffield United in October in the Premier League, the 5 foot 9 striker was restricted to just six substitute displays onward from February, clearly not included at the heart of Arteta's ambitious plans.

Nketiah had also netted in two of Arsenal's opening three top-flight fixtures but as Kai Havertz went from strength to strength so too did the Nketiah's match action suffer diminishment. With Sesko fiercely pursued and Gabriel Jesus vying for a place at No. 9, Wolves' target is clearly heading toward the exit in north London.

But Wolves want his signature for a reason. As per FBref, Nketiah ranks among the top 9% of forwards across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for touches in the attacking penalty area per 90 and the top 12% for pass completion, highlighting his strength as a frontal focal point and his ball-playing skill.

The £100k-per-week star is blessed with natural athletic prowess and all the tools to succeed as the leading man at a Premier League team, and while Wolves have been widely reported to be closing in on a move for Southampton's Che Adams, who is out of contract at St. Mary's this month, signing a player of Nketiah's ilk would be a major win.

Nketiah could lead the line for years to come at Molineux, providing O'Neil with a reliable goal threat to avoid the dreaded drop zone and instead tear through the division and toward the upper end.

Why Wolves are interested in Eddie Nketiah

There's perhaps a tacit outward air at Molineux that suggests Neto is going to leave this summer. The Portugal winger still has three years on his current deal but £60m is no small sum and sharp strategic transfer moves could make such an influx of cash worthwhile.

But of course, Nketiah is not a winger, and thus would not be a direct replacement for Neto, should he leave. Instead, the Gunners ace could find himself taking Matheus Cunha's role in the Old Gold first team, with the Brazilian attracting attention after his resounding 2023/24 campaign.

As per The Mirror, Manchester United are hot on the £60m-rated Cunha's trail and are even prepared to double his £60k-per-week salary. It's early days but if Sir Jim Ratcliffe's nosing-around turns into concrete interest, it might be hard for Wolves to turn the lucrative suitor away.

And there is no point denying that it would feel like a detrimental blow. Cunha has been positively magnificent this season, raising his game considerably and now ranking among the top 10% of forwards across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for pass completion, the top 12% for progressive passes, the top 5% for progressive carries, the top 3% for successful take-ons and the top 14% for tackles per 90.

He's been pretty good, and while there are myriad benefits to partnering Nketiah with the Brazilian, O'Neil's transfer target is technically proficient and is mutable in his playing style, capable of adopting a dynamic role that, yes, focusses on his goalscoring but also incorporates creativity and enhances team synergy.

Praised for his "incredible impact" and as a "beast" by his Arsenal manager, Nketiah is of course aware of his bit-part place in the Emirates machine, and given that he is now entering the prime of his career, surely he should prioritise playing time. His hat-trick this season emphasises the importance of finding a place to properly showcase his skills.

Spurs prepare bid for ideal Maddison upgrade in £40m "Poch-era Dele Alli"

We're just a week away from the transfer window officially opening, but clubs have been hard at work behind the scenes to bolster their squads ahead of next season, and Tottenham Hotspur are no different.

Ange Postecoglou has had a full Premier League season to assess the areas of his team that he thinks need strengthening, and based on recent reports, midfield is one of the priorities.

The latest player touted for a move to N17 has drawn comparisons to former fan favourite Dele Alli and could even threaten James Maddison's place in the team.

Tottenham Hotspur transfer rumours

According to a recent report from TEAMtalk, Tottenham are still incredibly interested in signing Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher in the coming weeks and are currently preparing an offer.

Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher

The report has revealed that while the player wishes to stay at Stamford Bridge, the West Londoners are resolute in their decision to sell the boyhood Blues fan.

Alongside the Lilywhites, Aston Villa and Atlético Madrid are said to be interested in the Englishman, and while the Blues hope to raise £50m from the sale, the interested parties believe £40m should be enough to get it done.

It could be a complicated transfer to get over the line, but adding an all-action midfielder like Gallagher to a Postecoglou system is an enticing prospect made all the more so by his comparisons to Dele – even if it puts Maddison's place in the team at risk.

How Gallagher compares to Dele and Maddison

Now, before we compare Gallagher to Spurs' current attacking midfielder, where do these comparisons to Dele come from?

Well, they stem from The Athletics' Spurs correspondent Jack Pitt-Brooke, who described Gallagher as a "Poch-era Dele Alli", primarily due to how "great at pressing and winning the ball back" he is.

He also claimed his "clever and dangerous" play in the final third was reminiscent of the former Lilywhites ace, and considering he scored 67 goals and provided 58 assists in 269 games for the club, that's high praise indeed.

With that said, if Postecoglou does get his hands on the Epsom-born midfielder this summer, the fact he started 21 games in attacking midfield this year could put him in direct competition with Maddison for a starting role in N17 next season, so how do the two players stack up against one another?

Well, from a pure output perspective, the Blues ace returned seven goals and nine assists in 50 games for the West Londoners, meaning he averaged a goal involvement every 3.1 games.

In contrast, the former Foxes ace only managed four goals and nine assists, but he did it in 30 games, meaning he had a better average of a goal involvement every 2.3 games, making it hard to pick a standout winner for their output.

However, there is one area in which it is incredibly clear-cut: injuries.

The Pensioners ace has never missed a game of senior football through injury in his career, whereas the man he could replace next season has missed 56 games, or 46 since the start of the 2020/21 campaign.

Moreover, he has suffered from five knee injuries, three hip injuries and two ankle injuries, which suggests these problems are not going to go away as he edges closer to 30.

Spurs hold talks to sign £21m star who could be Soldado 2.0

There are shades of the Spaniard’s transfer in this one.

ByJack Salveson Holmes Jun 6, 2024

Ultimately, both Maddison and Gallagher are incredibly talented footballers, but the former's injury record is a serious concern, so if Levy and Co can bring the Chelsea man to N17 this summer, they should – the comparisons to Dele are just a nice bonus.
