One more member of Pakistan camp tests positive for Covid-19

All other tests from day three of quarantine have returned negative results

Umar Farooq28-Nov-2020A seventh positive Covid-19 test has emerged from Pakistan’s touring contingent in New Zealand. The identity of the squad member is not yet clear.Six players – Sarfaraz Ahmed, Rohail Nazir, Naseem Shah, Mohammad Abbas, Abid Ali and Danish Aziz – had returned positive results from the first tests conducted upon Pakistan’s arrival in New Zealand on November 24.The latest positive result comes from the second batch of tests conducted on day three of the team’s quarantine at a managed isolation facility in Christchurch. All other tests conducted on day three have returned negative results. This doesn’t include the six players who had already tested positive and assistant coach Shahid Aslam, who will join the squad in Christchurch after completing his 14-day quarantine in Auckland.ALSO READ – New Zealand director of public health slams Pakistan Covid protocol breachesThe fact that the second round of testing only threw up one new positive case will come as a relief for the Pakistan Cricket Board, which had been awaiting the results with some anxiety, particularly after the revelations that some members of the touring contingent had breached Covid-19 protocols at their managed isolation facility. The PCB had, in fact, organised a media interaction with CEO Wasim Khan on Saturday morning, but cancelled it once it came to know there was only one additional positive case. Khan had earlier addressed the players and urged them to comply with Covid-19 protocols, saying it would be “hugely embarrassing” if they were sent home as a result of another breach. The squad will have to clear two more tests, on days six and 12 of their isolation, before being allowed to leave quarantine. Pakistan had sought an exemption to be allowed to train while in managed isolation, but that exemption is on hold pending investigation by medical authorities on its safety and feasibility. In the meanwhile, those who have tested negative are allowed to go out on their balconies or make short, individual visits to a park near the isolation facility.Pakistan are due to play three T20Is on December 18, 20 and 22 in Auckland, Hamilton and Napier respectively, before playing two Tests in Mount Maunganui (December 26-30) and Christchurch (January 3-7).

Eder – 22 jogos, cinco gols marcados

Rigoni – 21 jogos, nove gols marcados

Leeds lining up swoop for £30k-p/w star who could thrive with Dan James

The summer transfer window officially opened for business on Friday and Leeds United could be set for a summer of change within their playing squad.

Daniel Farke's side lost 1-0 to Southampton in the Championship play-off final at Wembley last month and it could lead to the club losing some key players over the coming months.

Vincent Kompany's Bayern Munich have been credited with an interest in right-back Archie Gray, Wilfried Gnonto is said to be eyeing a move to Italy, and Dutch magician Crysencio Summerville has been linked with Premier League giants Liverpool.

Archie Gray

However, there will also be a focus on who the Whites can bring to Elland Road to bolster their squad, and they reportedly have their eye on bringing one ace back for a second spell in Yorkshire.

Leeds United eyeing swoop for Burnley battler

According to The Athletic, Farke is lining up a swoop to sign experienced right-back Connor Roberts from Burnley this summer to bolster his defensive options.

The report claims that Leeds are 'interested' in signing both Joe Rodon and the Clarets talent again, after they spent time on loan with the club this season.

It does not reveal, however, how much Burnley would want for the Wales international, following their relegation from the Premier League this year.

Connor Roberts

They do not currently have a permanent manager in charge, after Kompany's move to Bayern, and this means that the Whites could have to wait until that issue is resolved before a final decision is made on Roberts' future.

If the Yorkshire-based outfit can iron out a deal to sign the 28-year-old battler then he could thrive alongside Dan James down the right flank, particularly if Gnonto gets his wish and departs from Elland Road.

Why Connor Roberts could thrive alongside Dan James

The Welsh full-back did not get many chances, with just two starts, during his short time with Leeds but he joined midway through the season and in the midst of a promotion push, which made it hard for him to break into the team.

With a full pre-season under his belt, Roberts, who reporter Beren Cross claimed "loves a scrap", could push on and enjoy a great relationship with James down the right due to his attacking potential at Championship level.

As you can see in the table above, the £30k-per-week defender caught the eye as an attacking force from right-back during the 2022/23 campaign, as his side won the Championship title.

This could make him an exciting partner for James, who contributed with 13 goals and seven assists in 28 starts this term for Leeds, as they could both offer an attacking threat on the same side.

Roberts' overlapping runs and proven track record in the league could cause opposition defenders to split their focus between him and the ex-Manchester United forward, which could then open up more space for the winger to work his magic in the final third.

They could, therefore, be a fantastic pairing on the right for Farke next season by causing constant problems for opponents as they can both chip in with goals and assists at an impressive rate, given their respective positions.

Sushma Verma and Sune Luus star in Velocity's come-from-behind victory

All it took was the confidence to go through with the big shot. For the entire evening, the Supernovas bowlers had been teasing the opposition with taunting, loopy spin. On a slow pitch, it was an excellent tactic. But Sushma Verma had both the bravery to step out of her crease and the skill to hit sixes when all the pressure was on her team. Her partnership of 51 off 35 balls for the fifth wicket with Sune Luus was pivotal to Velocity coming from behind and taking down the defending champions. All of this drama, when the target was only 127.Slow pitch blues
A late-season Sharjah pitch demanded a lot from every batter that went out there. The fast bowlers just had to maintain a good length and attack the stumps. The spinners had to avoid dropping it short. Even a hitter of the calibre of Chamari Atapattu was pottering around at 20 off 23 balls in the eighth over. The Supernovas were 43 for 2 at the time and the arrival of their captain appeared to have woken them up.It was desperately hard work working the ball around into gaps because of the slowness of the surface, but Harmanpreet Kaur was able to do it beautifully and then began opening up. A six over deep midwicket off Luus in the 14th over signalled that she was ready to go. Atapattu at the other end had already kicked into gear at and 42 off 36 balls with two fours and two sixes.Alam’s day out
At 13 overs, Supernovas were 89 for 2 and looking to launch. At 13.1, the game changed.Jahanara Alam suckered Atapattu to long-on with a wide ball well outside of her reach. She then had Kaur caught at fine leg in the 17th over and finished with figures of 2 for 27.Those two wickets were incredibly vital. The Supernovas lost their two biggest hitters with more than three overs of their innings still left to play. As a result, they could make only 10 runs off the last 18 balls. And lost four wickets doing so.An awkward chase
Dani Wyatt fell in the first over.Shafali Verma batted like a dream. She hit Ayabonga Khaka for a hat-trick of boundaries that made the pitch seem like a batting paradise, but in trying to go for a fourth big hit, she hit a full toss straight to deep midwicket.Mithali Raj couldn’t hit the ball off the square. She fell for 7 off 19 balls.Veda Krishnamurthy did her best to keep the required rate manageable while her captain struggled but when she fell in the 13th over for 29 off 28, it seemed like Velocity were done. They needed 62 off 42 balls and they only had the wicketkeeper, a bowling allrounder and the tail left. Fortunately for them, that proved to be enough.Verma and Luus to the rescue
The required rate had soared to 10 an over by the 15th. And Sushma Verma responded to that by dancing down the track and launching Poonam Yadav for a six over her head.Luus followed suit, her preference, sweeping the legspinner over deep square leg. That over cost Supernovas 14 runs and it ended with one of the best spinners in the world giving up on her single greatest strength – flighting the ball. The equation was 36 off 24 now. And it kept coming down with every straight hit by Verma and every sublime sweep from Luus. Two players with a clear gameplan and a willingness to attack the bowling. That’s all this game needed and that’s what won it in the end for Velocity.

Rangers lead race to sign 21 y/o who may end holiday early for Ibrox move

Rangers are thought to be leading the race to sign an in-demand player, who could even end his holiday early to complete an Ibrox move.

Rangers secure three summer signings

The Gers, manager Philippe Clement and director of recruitment Nils Koppen have already sealed summer deals for Jefte, Oscar Cortes and Clinton Nsiala, with the latter of the three the latest to sign, penning a pre-contract agreement from AC Milan.

Koppen said after securing a move for the young defender: “We are excited to add a talented young player in Clinton to the squad. He joins as an exciting talent who we believe can develop and take his next steps under our manager, Philippe Clement, and his staff. We look forward to welcoming Clinton to Glasgow as we continue to shape the squad ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.”

The three new arrivals could be just the start of a busy summer in Glasgow, with Rangers also thought to be at the front of the queue to sign 20-year-old forward Yusuf Kabadayi from Bayern Munich in a deal that could be worth between £1m-£1.5m. That would be four new additions, and by the looks of things, Rangers are working on a fifth signing and are also in pole position just like they are with Kabadayi.

Rangers leading race to sign Connor Barron from Aberdeen

According to The Scottish Sun, Rangers are ready to step up their interest in Connor Barron, who is out of contract this summer from Aberdeen.

The central midfielder is also wanted in England and Italy, with Cagliari specifically named, but it is Rangers who are leading the race as it stands. In fact, it is added that ‘Barron has been on a short break in Portugal but could fly back for a medical and contract talks’. Should Rangers win the race for the Scot, they will need to agree on a compensation fee with Aberdeen, or otherwise it could go to a tribunal.

Connor Barron Aberdeen

Barron has come through the academy at Pittodrie and has made senior 76 appearances for the club, 42 of which came during the 2023/24 season. Scotland U21 manager Scot Gemmill praised Barron late last year, calling him “impressive”.

"Connor is very impressive on and off the pitch the way he conducts himself. Put yourself in the shoes of this young player, he had a really tough year in terms of injury.

"I think it is another example of how the U21 team can help these young players. Connor played for us when we last played Belgium in Belgium, he was excellent and playing against a player that I believe signed for a club in the Bundesliga for around €10m. These are the opportunities where our young players can go face-to-face with the very best in Europe. Connor has shown in his performances for the U21s that he can do that and I give him big credit for that.”

Sky Sports: Club make £4m bid to sign Celtic player who wants Parkhead exit

Celtic have received an offer in the region of £4m for a player who seemingly wants to quit Parkhead.

Celtic transfer rumours

With the transfer window officially open today, the Hoops and Brendan Rodgers can look to bolster their squad after another Scottish Premiership title triumph last season.

The Hoops are reportedly interested in a deal to sign the Premier League ace this summer.

ByDan Emery Jun 12, 2024

There could be plenty of change at Celtic Park, though, with a new goalkeeper required to fill the void left by Joe Hart, who has now retired. Rodgers admitted back in February that the club could be brave with their signings.

“I would go with supporters thinking we could maybe be a little bit braver in terms of bringing in another level of player. But that’s up to me to try and fix that over the course of my time here. You look at the strategy here and you have to be careful because in some ways it has worked. You bring in players for a minimal fee and then they go out and make the club a lot of money.

“What I want to hopefully balance in my time here is that we can still do that, because it is an important part of the modern game. But we also want to be brave enough to hang our hat on a ready-made player.”

Along with any incomings, though, there could also be sales at Parkhead, with star midfielder Matt O’Riley continuing to attract intrest and centre-back Gustaf Lagerbielke in the middle of an approach from Italian club Lecce. The Hoops have also received a proposal from KRC Genk for striker Hyeon-gyu Oh, and there have now been further details on a possible move away.

Hyeon-gyu Oh transfer latest

According to Sky Sports journalist Anthony Joseph, an offer Celtic have received from Genk for Oh is worth around £4m, with talks ongoing and the player keen to leave for regular game time.

It has since been added that personal terms between Oh and Genk have been agreed, so it looks as if Celtic are in line to make a profit on the £2.5m they paid Suwon Samsung Bluewings for the forward last year.

The 23-year-old played just 722 minutes of football last season, scoring five goals in 22 appearances. In total, Oh is poised to leave Glasgow with 12 goals in 47 games, winning five major honours.

Celtic striker Hyeon-gyu Oh.

He has impressed at times during his short spell in Scotland, though. Rodgers said late last year after a 4-1 win over Hibernian where Oh scored a brace: “Oh was excellent. He was a really good reference for the team, his hold-up play, in the box he’s there and obviously his second goal shows he can also run in behind.

“Great strength and then really good composure. I was really pleased with him. He came into the game and did really well.

“Kyogo can’t play every game but when you have someone like Oh who can come in and make an impact, it’s good.”

Chelsea submit bid for £70 million striker after green light from Maresca

Chelsea have submitted a bid to sign a £70 million striker after manager Enzo Maresca personally welcomed the move, and they've received a reply to their approach.

Chelsea targeting new senior attackers despite busy early summer

The west Londoners have officially confirmed a flurry of early deals, spending around £105 million in total on the signings of defender Tosin Adarabioyo, starlet striker Marc Guiu, youngster Omari Kellyman, midfielder Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Brazilian prodigy Estevao Willian.

£210,000-per-week striker compared to Ronaldo really wants Chelsea move

Chelsea helped to fund those moves by shaking hands on exits for Hakim Ziyech, Lewis Hall, Omari Hutchinson and Ian Maatsen, who have been sold for around £84 million in total.

Estevao, who is highly-rated but not set to join until 2025, and Guiu could be seen as ones for the future – rather than immediate upgrades to Maresca's first team attacking options.

Therefore, it is believed co-sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley remain in the market for new senior attackers. Chelsea missed out on a deal for Michael Olise, despite widely reported talks, with the 22-year-old instead joining Vincent Kompany at Bayern Munich.

A new wide player is still possible, though, as Chelsea maintain a rumoured interest in Athletic Bilbao starlet Nico Williams among others. Chelsea are also believed to be in the market for a new striker, with Mauricio Pochettino relying heavily on Cole Palmer for Chelsea's output last term.

Napoli star Victor Osimhen is among Chelsea's striker targets, with the Nigerian said to favour a move to Stamford Bridge as his best possible option. Chelsea chiefs have held internal discussions over Ivan Toney as well, coming after his heroic extra-time assist for Harry Kane against Slovakia in the Last 16 of Euro 2024.

Another striker to be linked quite recently is Atletico Madrid starlet Samu Omorodion. The 20-year-old has just impressed on a season-long loan at Deportivo, scoring nine goals and registering an assist in 36 appearances.

While these numbers don't appear mind-blowing on paper, he is very highly-rated in Spain and viewed as a player with real potential.

"Omorodion is an imposing centre-forward blessed with great physicality, aerial prowess, speed and agility, a combination which has given many experienced defenders nightmares at the start of his career," wrote reporter Tom Olver in The Metro.

"The Spain U21 international has also been praised for his tenacious work ethic and has a reputation for tirelessly pressing his opponents."

Chelsea submit bid for Omorodion after Maresca green light

The Sun have an update on Chelsea's pursuit of the Spaniard, and it is believed Maresca personally welcomes the prospect of him joining the west Londoners as he green-lights a move.

Chelsea have also submitted a £42 million bid for Omorodion, but Atletico have replied by snubbing their approach as the La Liga side hold out for as much as £70 million.

Maresca has made clear he wants another forward to compete with Nicolas Jackson next season, with co-sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart identifying Omorodion as the ideal profile suited to his style.

Shreyas Iyer: 'Smiles back on our faces after the four consecutive losses'

Delhi Capitals’ captain says his team can deal with the challenge of Mumbai Indians as they are a “fearless and amazing bunch of boys”

Hemant Brar02-Nov-2020

Shreyas Iyer sets himself up to punish a short ball•BCCI

A relieved Shreyas Iyer says that the win against the Royal Challengers Bangalore has put the “smile back on the faces” of his team and given them a much-needed lift after a wobble in their campaign. But now that a top-two spot is secured, the focus shifts to taking on an in-form Mumbai Indians, for direct passage to the final. The Mumbai Indians had beaten the Capitals in both league-stage games, but Iyer thinks his team will be up to the challenge as they are a “fearless and amazing bunch of boys”.Despite winning seven out of their first nine games of the season, the Daredevils were yet to book a playoff spot coming into their last league game. A six-wicket win over the Royal Challengers finally sealed the deal.”This win was very essential and it has put smiles on our faces after the four consecutive losses,” Iyer said at the post-match press conference. “Today the way we played, it was a comprehensive win. I think all the departments were covered up really well by the players and I am really chuffed by their performance, the way they came up and delivered at the right time. The second place obviously makes you feel good after the season you had, with all the ups and downs. The IPL is always a rollercoaster journey.”The Mumbai Indians are one of the best teams. Having said that, I feel we are also a fearless and amazing bunch of boys. It really depends on the day. Obviously, they are pretty much experienced in such [playoff] stages, but the team that has a good attitude and good composure on that given day is going to make it through. I feel that we need to keep things simple and not complicate in pressure situations. The way we have been going, this was a really good win and it’s going to be a really good booster as well for us.”The win was set up by the Capitals’ bowlers, who restricted the Royal Challengers to a below-par 152 for 7. Their spinners varied their pace intelligently to keep things quiet in the middle overs and when the Royal Challengers batsmen tried to break free, Anrich Nortje pegged them back by picking up three wickets.Along with Kagiso Rabada, Nortje has been at the forefront of the Capitals’ pace attack, and Iyer was full of praise for the duo.”It makes my job easy, to be honest, because of the way these guys plan in the team meeting,” he said. “They come up with their own ideas and, for me as a captain on the field, it’s pretty much easy to set the fields. I just go and ask them what you are going to bowl and they literally mail all of the balls. I am really happy the way the things are going so far and the way Nortje came up and delivered. Really happy for him and the way he performed today.”Another positive for the Capitals was Ajinkya Rahane’s performance. Coming in for Shimron Hetmyer, Rahane scored a measured 60 off 46 balls from No. 3 and added 88 for the second wicket with Shikhar Dhawan to take the game away from the Royal Challengers.”He carries a lot of experience in the IPL and the way he paced his innings, it was amazing to see,” Iyer said. “The loose balls he punished, other than that he was taking single and twos. It was a great example and I think he peaked at the right time, just when we needed him. With a few important matches coming up, he will definitely play an important role in them.”

Club reply as Tottenham make bid for £21 million player after Archie Gray

Tottenham have lodged an offer to sign another starlet amid their completed deal for Leeds United sensation Archie Gray, with his club already replying after Daniel Levy's advances.

Spurs reach agreement to sign Gray from Leeds for £40 million

Following a whirlwind last 72 hours, Spurs reached an agreement to sign Gray from Leeds for around £40 million, coming after they swooped in to hijack Brentford's deal for the 18-year-old.

Tottenham offer Richarlison in swap deal bid for £120,000-per-week star

The Brazilian has been tipped to leave.

The Bees originally shook hands on a £35 million deal to sign Gray instead of Spurs, and even booked a medical for the versatile teenager, who made an impressive 52 appearances in all competitions for Leeds last season as they narrowly missed out on Premier League promotion.

The transfer seemed done and dusted for Thomas Frank's side, who were commended for sealing an under-the-radar move for one of England's most exciting talents. However, journalist Ben Jacobs, who urged "caution until the ink is dry", was proven right in his call as he wrote on X that Spurs were one to watch in terms of hijacking the deal.

That scenario came to pass, with Brentford unable to finalise the terms and Ange Postecoglou moving in to take advantage of this situation. Following accelerated talks over the weekend, Spurs concluded talks with Leeds over a deal for Gray at around £40 million and have now announced a deal.

Out-of-favour defender Joe Rodon, who impressed on loan at Leeds last season, has also gone the other way in a separate £10 million move.

Fiorentina reply as Tottenham submit £17 million bid for Kayode

Fiorentina defender Michael Kayode is a player of interest to Spurs, who could replace the exit-bound Emerson Royal, as the Brazilian remains heavily linked with a move to AC Milan.

Michael Kayode tussling with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia

Viola News have an update on this, and the Italian news website claims Tottenham have made a bid of just less than £17 million for Kayode alongside Aston Villa. However, Fiorentina value the right-back at no less than £21 million, with Viola's headline claiming Spurs' opening offer has been rejected.

Kayode, who made 26 Serie A appearances under former boss Vincenzo Italiano last season, has been described as a player with serious potential.

“This one is really strong,” said Pino Vitale, an experienced Italian agent, to Radio Firenze Viola (via HITC) after Kayode's performance against Napoli star Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.

“Incredible. He forced Khvicha Kvaratskhelia to chase him. It was the best match ever since (Vincenzo) Italiano took over Fiorentina. They didn’t let Napoli play and ate them up. (Full-backs Fabiano) Parisi and Kayode are strong and played an excellent game.

“Kvaratskhelia had to change wings due to the way Kayode controlled him! There is no need to worry about him. He is only 19 years old, but he is a ‘player’.”

'I'm not afraid of anyone' – USMNT's Malik Tillman on embracing shyness, showing passion, and Mauricio Pochettino's Dele Alli challenge

Don't mistake Tillman’s shyness: the American midfielder is happy to let his game do the talking

GUADALAJARA, Mexico — As he sits fiddling with the strings on his hoodie in the Guadalajara sun, Malik Tillman's voice hardly rises. He's calm, as he always is. The 22-year-old midfielder rarely shows emotion. No matter the situation, Tillman remains stoic, reserved and, to be honest, just a little bit shy.

His voice may not rise often but, for a split second, a burst of passion comes out. That's because he has a confession to make: he knows what people think of him.

Tillman is naturally quiet, but he has become very aware of what his shyness portrays. He knows how it's perceived when he doesn't bat an eye, yell or react when things don't go his way or, more importantly, his team's way. He knows that there's a segment of U.S. men's national team fans that see him walking off the field emotionless and wonder one thing: why doesn't he feel this as much as we do?

From the outside, it may look like he doesn't care. Tillman sees that, feels that and understands that, but he's also determined to set the record straight.

Malik Tillman does, in fact, care, perhaps more than even those closest to him realize.

"Some people say I'm not interested in the game just from the way I look," Tillman tells GOAL, "but it really is more or less the other way around. That's just how I express myself. I'm a chill guy, and that's also me on the pitch. I might seem relaxed or seem like I don't care, but it really is the other way around.

"I mean, this is just how I am. This? This is how I can be the best I can be."

Tillman is reaching a point where the USMNT will need him to be at his best. With new coach Mauricio Pochettino leading the charge, there are big expectations now being placed on Tillman's shoulders, including from the coach himself. On the club level with PSV, Tillman is the best he's ever been. He's third in the Eredivisie with four goals and he leads the Dutch league in chances created with 21. The goal of being at the 2026 World Cup is in sight, particularly if he continues on the path he's currently on.

Tillman doesn't talk about his goals much. In fact, he doesn't talk about anything much. He generally keeps to himself, both on the field and off of it. Don't mistake his shyness for meekness, though. As he looks to make his mark and seize opportunities for club and country, he has one more message to send:

"As soon as the game comes, for me, I'm not afraid of anyone," he insists.

  • 'He was always a bit shy'

There isn't a person in this world who understands Tillman quite like his older brother, Timothy. There's a bond there, naturally, like all brothers have. In many ways, though, the Tillmans' bond is different.

That's because, for nearly their entire lives, Malik Tillman followed his older brother, who is three years his senior, just about everywhere, both figuratively and literally.

Born in Germany to a German mother and American father, Timothy Tillman emerged at the academy of Greuther Furth. Malik Tillman did, too. When older brother moved to Bayern Munich in 2012, younger brother came as part of the deal. It wasn't until 2020, when Timothy Tillman returned to Furth before then joining LAFC, that the two were separated. For nearly their entire young lives, the Tillmans did everything together.

So who better to ask than the elder Tillman: was your brother always like this? Was he always so reserved?

"He was always a little bit shy," Timothy Tillman tells GOAL. "Especially when we were younger, we just would just tell people, 'He's very shy'. Now that he's older, we just know that he's very quiet. It's not really that he's shy; it's just he's not a very outgoing person.

"That doesn't mean he doesn't care about things, and he's more talkative with me than with other people, but yeah, he's always been like that, and I'm not sure if that will change at any point in his life.

"He wants to achieve things, and that's why he puts so much pressure on himself. He just wants to reach things without talking to someone about it or without someone knowing it before he does it. If you're not very outgoing, then you just have to deal with everything by yourself. He's always been like that, and he has done some great things so far. He has his circle, and I feel like towards us, he is talking about those things, but he's not very open."

The younger Tillman brother agrees. There are so many things that the two have in common, including their profession, but there are many differences between them.

"He's very chill, too but he's more open, more active," Malik says. "He's not really the opposite. He's the same as me, but we're also so different in a lot of ways."

Soccer has always united them, from childhood to adulthood and, while it's taken them on different paths, it also brought them both to America.

    The American experience

After spending five years in Germany's youth setup, Tillman made the bold call in 2022 to switch to the USMNT. It was seen as a massive win for the U.S. This wasn't a player with no future with one country joining another for playing time. No, there were those in Germany who felt frustrated to lose out on a player of Tillman's talents.

He officially made the switch in 2022. One day later, he earned his first cap in a 3-0 win over Morocco in Cincinnati. He traveled to Kansas City and Austin soon after, getting his first real taste of life as an American soccer player.

The first big change? His name. Pronounced Mal-ick in Germany, Tillman's name was Americanized to Ma-leek almost immediately.

"I told the guys here, that's how you pronounce it in America, so I'll go with it while I'm here," he says. "They also call me that now at PSV, too."

That summer of 2022 was an introduction for Tillman, regardless of how folks pronounced his name. Born and raised in Nuremberg, those first few games were his first big taste of America and, even looking back on it, he still feels that sense of being just a little bit overwhelmed.

"My first experience being here, I told everyone this country is too big," he says with a laugh. "Everything is just bigger here than it is in Europe. For example, the highways! It's so different. I can't really explain it. Just everything is bigger, everything is further away."

Tillman hopes to travel through the country someday, like really travel. Due to his schedule with club and country, there isn't much time to really see America. He often jets into a city, hangs at the hotel, plays and leaves. Someday, maybe he can see these cities, live them, experience them.

"I've been more or less to the same cities every time," he says. "We just stay at the hotel. We might look around a few blocks when we take a walk, but that's it."

Tillman, like all dual nationals, does feel the push and pull that come with that status. Like other USMNT stars Yunus Musah and Folarin Balogun, he also experienced the wave of recruitment. He saw the flags and eagle emojis on his social media posts, as is now a tradition for any rising star who's eligible to wear red, white and blue.

They made him feel welcome, but they also made him feel pressure to prove that he really was the guy fans wanted in Stars and Stripes. He never outwardly showed it because he hardly ever does, but Tillman was aware of the weight that came with being labeled as the USMNT's recruit of the moment.

"Before, it's like people hop on the hype train," he says, "but then, after that, I would say you put pressure on yourself as well. That's quite normal. You always have high expectations of yourself, so it's the same when you play for your club."

He added, "For me, it's not really different, obviously changing nationality is different, but you have high expectations of yourself, and you just have to try to do the best you can."

    Pochettino's Dele challenge

Since making his USMNT debut in 2022, Tillman has earned 15 caps. He's yet to score in a USMNT shirt, though. It's a wild statistic given how prolific he's been with PSV, particularly this season as he's scored four goals in eight games as a No. 10.

In a way, though, those 15 caps don't really matter anymore. All that matters is the next one.

That's because Mauricio Pochettino has arrived and, upon his arrival, he had a clear message for Tillman. He also had a role model to point him towards to show him the way.

"When I first came in, he immediately spoke to me," Tillman says. "He says that, when he's watching my game, he sees a little bit of Dele Alli. It's an amazing feeling because everyone knows he's a big coach. He's done amazing at Tottenham."

Pochettino laughed when asked about the comparison. It's true, he says: there are similarities there. Both are 6'2", lanky playmakers. Both can influence games with goals and assists. Pochettino believes that Tillman, like Alli, has the potential to be a game-breaker.

"When we talk about talent, they maybe have similar talent, but they come from different backgrounds. Malik, we need to use our experience to challenge him to try and compete in this way," Pochettino explains. "If Malik competes in a way that is similar to Dele Alli, he has the capacity, the talent, the body, the power…everything. He has character that he needs to express a little bit more, but he has that talent."

Alli was unplayable between 2015-18, scoring 37 Premier League goals while providing 26 assists from a midfield position during that span. He's had his struggles since but, make no mistake: At that time, there were few midfielders in the world better than England's rising star.

Tillman isn't there yet. His nine goals and 10 assists last season in the Eredivisie was a start. So, too, are his five goal contributions so far this season. Pochettino challenges Tillman to be more, though, and he can provide his young midfielder with the perfect case study.

"Dele Alli was an animal," Pochettino recalled. "Very competitive. He was unbelievable. When he arrived at 17 years old from MK Dons, it was impossible to stop him. We're not even talking about football; we're talking about competing. He was killing everyone: teammates and opponents. Sometimes we had to stop him and tell him to be calm.

He added: "Don't take it in a bad way. [Tillman]'s an amazing talent, but we want him to be better and better. Whether it's [Christian] Pulsiic or a different player, we need to help them be better and better."

Tillman is up for the challenge. He appreciates the comparison and wants to prove his new coach right. And, along the way, he wants to make an impact with the national team in ways he hasn't quite been able to just yet.

"He's coached amazing players and he wants us to reach the top," he says. "It's all about winning games. With him, you have to have the mentality to just win games. That's all we care about, and that's how we should see and how I should see the game."

    Enjoying the moment

In the end, there's something that Timothy Tillman wants the world to know about his brother. It's something he's come to learn during their lives together. He, more than most, understands how his younger sibling can be, but he also wants the world to see his brother the way he does.

"I think a lot of people don't get that you could really have just a good time with him," he says. "People tend to think, 'Okay, yeah, you can't really have fun with this guy because he's so quiet and not really outgoing'. Even when he does fun stuff, he's not expressing himself a lot, so people think, 'Okay, he's not enjoying it', but he really is enjoying it. He's always just really enjoying the moment."

That's how the man himself sees it, too. He very much tries to live in the present. He doesn't dwell on the past, nor look at the future and its implications. As a game is being played, that's usually where his head is at: on the game.

That's why he often comes off as aloof or uninterested. That's why those who don't know him question what he thinks of it all. He rarely comes out and says it. All that's left to do is assume.

The next time fans see him, Tillman hopes they assume he's just doing his thing. He's just being who he always was: quiet, reserved, introspective. He may never be the face of the USMNT. He may never be a vocal leader or an emotional heartbeat. To him, that's okay. That's not him.

And, the next time fans see him, Tillman hopes that they know that he's enjoying it all just as much as they are. The highs, the lows and the rollercoaster of it all… the ride is fun. It even makes him crack a smile once in a while.

"If you think about it, yeah, you've been working your whole life for this moment," he says, "but as soon as you're in the moment, you feel like, 'Oh yeah, this is going quickly'. This can all happen quickly and it cannot. It can also change quickly again, too. I just live through the moment. Maybe, after my career, I will say, 'Yeah, I've been, I've been working hard for this, for these moments'. Right now, I'm just glad I'm a part of it."
