  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Jorgensen's goalkeeping nightmare cost Chelsea crucial points on Saturday at Villa Park as they yet again dropped points from a winning situation. The visitors took the lead in the ninth minute through Enzo Fernandez's strike but Marco Asensio's second-half brace secured all three points for the Villans. After equalising for his team just before the hour mark, the Paris Saint-Germain loanee netted the winner in the 89th minute as his shot squirmed under Jorgensen.

  • WHAT ENZO MARESCA SAID

After the match, Maresca hinted that he could reinstate Robert Sanchez as the team's first-choice custodian as the Italian told reporters: "I don't know. At this moment, it is not today's mistake that I am going to change my mind about Filip in this moment. We will see.

"The keeper position is a delicate one. The striker can miss the goal and sometimes it doesn't look so important but when the keeper makes a mistake, it's always clear. We need to support each other, stay strong and work hard. In two days, we have one more game at home and hopefully, we can finally win in front of our fans."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Since moving to Chelsea from Villarreal in the summer, Jorgensen has appeared in 16 matches across all competitions with most of them coming in the cup competitions. Since the start of February, though, Maresca started including him in the first eleven as he played the club's last three Premier League matches.

India Under-19 clinch record eighth Asia Cup title after thrashing Sri Lanka

Spinners Ostwal, Tambe and opener Raghuvanshi shine as India beat Sri Lanka by nine wickets in rain-hit final

India Under-19 players won the Asia Cup for the eighth time•Asian Cricket Council

India ended 2021 with a memorable feat, winning a record eighth Under-19 Asia Cup title in nine editions, by thrashing Sri Lanka by nine wickets in the rain-affected final in Dubai on Friday.India’s win was orchestrated by spinners Vicky Ostwal and Kaushal Tambe and opener Angkrish Raghuvanshi, who remained unbeaten on 56.

The spinners shared five wickets between them to restrict Sri Lanka to 106 for 9 in the revised quota of 38 overs after they were asked to bat. Left-arm spinner Ostwal ended with figures of 3 for 11 in eight overs, while offspinner Tambe took 2 for 23 in six overs.India struck in the fourth over of the innings when left-arm quick Ravi Kumar dismissed opener Chamindu Wickramasinghe for 2. The pace duo of Rajvardhan Hangargekar and Kumar kept the pressure on Sri Lanka and kept them to 15 for 1 after 10 overs. The spinners struck soon and Sri Lanka were reeling at 57 for 7. Play stopped after 33 overs for two hours due to heavy rains and the game was then reduced to 38-overs-a-side, in which Sri Lanka just scrapped past 100.India were set a revised 102-run target in 32 overs via the DLS method, which they chased down with much ease in 21.3 overs. After Harnoor Singh was trapped lbw for 5 in the fifth over, Shaik Rasheed and Raghuvanshi shared an unbroken 96-run stand to take the team home. Raghuvanshi’s knock included seven fours, while Rasheed hit two fours in his 49-ball 31.Rasheed and Harnoor ended the competition as the top-two leading scorers with 133 and 131 runs in four matches, respectively.India’s only loss in the competition came against Pakistan.

If Tavernier is sold: Rangers already have 3 perfect future Ibrox captains

Glasgow Rangers are already on the ropes in the race to secure the Scottish Premiership title and are in danger of missing out on the trophy for a fourth year in succession.

Philippe Clement’s side are already nine points adrift of Celtic and Aberdeen, who are both unbeaten, and need an incredible run of form and a drop-off from their rivals to have a chance of overtaking them.

The Light Blues have already lost three times in the top-flight this season, once each to the Hoops and the Dons, and dropped points in a 0-0 draw with Hearts on the opening day.

Their struggles, once again, in the league could see a major change to the squad, with a recent report suggesting that a key player could be sold.

Football Insider recently claimed that Rangers are planning to cash in on James Tavernier next summer, with his contract up in 2026, because of his ‘declining’ performances on the pitch.

If the Ibrox giants go ahead with their plan to sell the English full-back, the Gers would need a new captain, and here are three possible options for Clement to choose from.

1 Jack Butland

Jack Butland

One contender to take on the armband is goalkeeper Jack Butland, who joined the Light Blues on a free transfer from Crystal Palace in the summer of 2023.

The 31-year-old star is one of the most experienced players in the dressing room and has played at a high level, with 87 appearances in the Premier League in his career.

Butland could be the oldest player in the squad at the end of the 2024/25 campaign, as the only two players currently older than him are James Tavernier and Leon Balogun. The former is reportedly due to be sold and the latter is due to be out of contract at the end of the month when he turns 37.

This suggests that he could be in the best position to pass on advice to the younger members of the squad and would have the most experience in big moments to calm the troops when needed.

Butland has also been incredibly reliable for the Gers on the pitch, both in terms of his performances and his availability. Since his move to the club last year, the English titan has made a whopping 78 appearances for the club in all competitions – playing every single minute of league action in that time.

As you can see in the table above, the former England international has kept 24 clean sheets in the Premiership since the start of last season and saved 71% of the shots against his goal.

This shows that he has been a safe pair of hands, saving the majority of the efforts against him to keep a healthy number of shutouts, and that is why he should be a contender for the captaincy, as he is a strong performer and an experienced head in the dressing room.

2 John Souttar

John Souttar

Another strong option to be the new captain if Tavernier is sold is central defender John Souttar, whose performances have been impressive this season.

He initially arrived at Ibrox on a free transfer from Hearts in the summer of 2022 but endured an incredibly frustrating debut campaign with the Gers, with 13 appearances in all competitions due to a long-term absence with an ankle injury.

Souttar worked his way back to fitness and played 41 times in all competitions during the 2023/24 campaign under Michael Beale and Clement, scoring two goals from centre-back.

As you can see in the table above, the former Jam Tarts star has been a dominant force at the back for the Scottish giants and helped to keep an impressive six clean sheets in ten league outings.

Butland described Souttar as “brilliant” in October and claimed that the Scotland international “gives everything for the club”, which suggests that he is captain material, as the defender is committed to the team and plays with passion.

The colossus is also vastly experienced in Scottish football, with over 200 appearances in the Premiership, and could be a great role model for the younger players to look up to, as he has been there and done it in the top-flight, which is another reason why Clement must consider him to be the next skipper.

3 Dujon Sterling

Rangers midfielder Dujon Sterling.

The third potential option to take on the captaincy is versatile star Dujon Sterling, who has yet to nail down a regular starting spot in his favoured position at right-back.

His lack of regular starts in the team may make this selection seem odd, but Football FanCast recently posted an article suggesting that the sale of Tavernier could open the door for the former Chelsea man to establish himself on the right side.

Sterling has only started four games at right-back since the start of last season, with other outings at right-midfield, defensive midfield, left-back, central midfield, and left-midfield, but the captain leaving in January or next summer could allow him to play there regularly.

Glasgow Rangers defender Dujon Sterling.

The 25-year-old star has shown his commitment to the Gers by being willing to play in such a variety of positions for the club, being ready to play wherever he is needed, across 53 appearances.

Since his move to Ibrox, Sterling has not missed more than two games in a row through injury, which suggests that he has the availability required to be the captain, as it would be pointless for Clement to appoint a new skipper if they are constantly missing through injury.

At the age of 25, the former Stoke loanee is the youngest player on this list by several years and that means that he would have the time to grow into the role and be the long-term replacement for Tavernier, both in terms of the right-back position and the captaincy.

Rangers can hit gold with "exceptional" replacement if they sell Tavernier

Glasgow Rangers are reportedly considering a move to sell the Ibrox legend James Tavernier.

Celtic could land upgrade on Hatate in "bargain" swoop for "hot" sensation

Celtic return to action in the Scottish Premiership on Saturday as they prepare to travel away from Parkhead to take on Hearts in the evening kick-off.

The Hoops have had a two-week break, thanks to the last international window of 2024, and will be hoping to pick up where they left off, having won ten of their 11 matches in the league thus far.

Brendan Rodgers will be hoping that all of his stars return from international duty without any injury issues that could keep them out for the upcoming matches in the Premiership and the Champions League.

He may, therefore, be thankful that his three Japanese gems barely featured for their country, as Kyogo Furuhashi and Reo Hatate made one substitute appearance each, whilst Daizen Maeda featured in both games as a substitute.

The trio were not overworked by Japan in their two matches and will now return to Celtic fresh and ready to compete, and possibly start, against Hearts on Saturday.

Hatate has faced serious competition for his place in the starting XI for the Scottish giants this season, though, with the additions of Arne Engels and Luke McCowan, and the return of Paulo Bernardo, in the summer.

Reo Hatate's form for Celtic

The 26-year-old star has still managed to make the line-up on a regular basis in the Premiership, with nine starts in 11 matches, and that speaks to how much Rodgers trusts him.

Hatate, who was restricted to 16 league outings last term through injury, has prevented McCowan and Bernardo from being regular starters in the top-flight, with Engels and Callum McGregor the usual picks alongside him in the midfield three.

The Japan international has earned his place in the starting XI with dynamic and quality performances in the middle of the park, as he has been able to showcase his ability in possession.

As you can see in the table above, Hatate has provided quality as both a scorer and a creator from a midfield position for Celtic in the Premiership, and he has been unfortunate not to register a single assist so far.

His return of zero assists from four ‘big chances’ created and 14 key passes suggests that his teammates have let him down with their wasteful finishing in the final third, as they have not made the most of his creativity.

The midfield whiz has also produced one goal and one assist in four matches in the Champions League for Celtic, starting three of those matches on the European stage, with his goal coming against RB Leipzig earlier this month.

Despite Hatate’s strong form in all competitions this season, Rodgers could go and land an upgrade on the Hoops star by swooping for one of the club’s reported transfer targets – Lennon Miller.

Celtic's interest in Lennon Miller

The Daily Mail recently reported that Celtic are interested in a potential move to sign the Scotland U21 international from Premiership rivals Motherwell when the January transfer window opens for business.

It was claimed that the Hoops and their Glasgow rivals Rangers are both preparing swoops to snap the Scottish starlet up ahead of the second half of the season.

The report added, however, that Premier League giants Liverpool are also keeping tabs on the 18-year-old dynamo and could join the race for his signature. This suggests that Celtic and Rangers could face some serious competition for his services, as Arne Slot’s side are currently top of the English top-flight and could be an attractive destination.

Celtic were dealt a blow by the attraction of a move to Anfield in 2022 when 16-year-old starlet Ben Doak decided to move on from Parkhead to join the Reds for a compensation fee of £600k.

The Bhoys will be hoping that the allure of the Premier League does not hurt them again, as Miller could be an excellent addition to Rodgers’ squad in January.

It was reported by the Daily Mail that Motherwell are set to hold out for a fee of around £4m and Celtic must now splash out to sign him as quickly as possible, to stop Liverpool or Rangers from beating them to his signature.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Journalist Mark Guidi recently claimed a fee of £3.5m plus add-ons would be a “bargain” for the Hoops and added that the “hot” sensation has the potential to get “hotter” in the future, suggesting that Celtic could then make a big profit further down the line.

Why Lennon Miller would be an upgrade on Reo Hatate

Rodgers should push for the board to snap the Scottish teenager up when the January transfer window opens for business because his performances in the Premiership this season have been nothing short of outstanding.

Miller only turned 18 in August and has already established himself as one of the stars in his position in the league, after playing 25 times as a 17-year-old in the division last season.

As you can see in the clip above, the teenage sensation did showcase his quality against Celtic earlier this year, spinning McGregor and providing a brilliant assist.

He used the 2023/24 campaign to settle into senior football and gain vital experience in the Premiership by playing week-in-week-out for Motherwell, and is now kicking on and thriving.

As you can see in the table above, Miller has offered a similar level of quality to Hatate in the final third, as they have both produced seven goals and ‘big chances’ created combined in the Premiership.

However, the Scottish starlet has provided far more to his team out of possession as a defensive and combative presence in the middle of the park, with 9.5 tackles, interceptions, and recoveries per game.

These statistics suggest that Miller would come in at Parkhead as an upgrade on the Japan international, by offering the same qualities at the top end of the pitch whilst being far better off the ball to protect his defence.

Celtic's huge talent who left for just £600k is now becoming "world-class"

The former Celtic man has impressed whilst playing for his country this season.

At the age of 18, he is also eight years younger than Hatate and has more time ahead of him to develop and improve, which is why Rodgers must swoop to bring him to Glasgow in January.

Champions League or bust? Sergio Conceicao feeling the pressure at AC Milan as Antonio Conte linked with San Siro side

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

A report from Calciomercato has revealed that Sergio Conceicao's future as the manager of AC Milan is under scrutiny at the moment. The Portuguese head coach is expect to be shown the door in the summer should he fail to lead Milan to a Champions League spot next season.

  • Getty Images Sport

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

This has been quite a challenging season for the Rossoneri, as they experienced a subpar first half of the season under former manager Paulo Fonseca. However, new arrival Conceicao has embraced the challenge with enthusiasm, fully aware that results are crucial. What does he need to do save his job? It's simple, lead Milan to a top-four finish in Serie A.

He led Milan to an unlikely Supercoppa Italiana triumph over Inter last month, bringing about renewed hope for the fans of the prestigious club. On the other hand, Milan were, rather unexpectedly, eliminated by Feyenoord in the pre-Round of 16 playoffs in the Champions League.

All things said and done, should he fail to meet the expectations set by the club’s owners, another managerial change could be imminent. The uncertainty is compounded by the upcoming decision on the new sporting director, with an announcement expected by April, which could influence potential managerial shifts.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

One name that doesn't need any introduction or formal backing for the job as Conceicao's successor is Antonio Conte. Recent comments from the former Inter and Juventus coach have raised doubts about his future at Napoli, reigniting rumors about Milan. It's important to note that Conte is under contract with Napoli until June 2027, meaning he would have to break his deal to leave. As a result, enticing him away from Naples would not be an easy task.

    WHAT NEXT FOR AC MILAN?

With just a little over 10 league games left to play, and Milan stuttering in mid-table, eight points behind the top four, it seems an arduous task to see them challenge for a top four spot. However, wins against Lazio (March 2) and Lecce (March 8) could prove to be a catalyst.

Aston Villa have struck gold on Emery signing whose value has risen 316%

Although Aston Villa have slipped up in recent matches, with zero wins coming their way so far in November, there have still been plenty of positives this season for the Villa Park masses to cling onto.

The Villans are only a point off third position in the early Premier League standings, with a winnable game up next against Oliver Glasner’s Crystal Palace gifting Unai Emery’s men a chance to bounce back from any recent poor results.

Emery will also know there’s more than enough talent in his camp to turn around this stumble in form, with the likes of Morgan Rogers and other stars at his disposal excelling away from some unwanted losses.

Top Villa performers this season

Rogers does feel like the obvious player to start with here, considering he has just won himself a new bumper deal at Villa Park until 2030, after also being gifted a senior England international call-up.

The constantly entertaining attacking midfielder has fired home three goals and picked up three assists across all competitions, wth his top performance levels not wavering in the Champions League whatsoever, with a ridiculous seven dribbles successfully registered against Bologna on Europe’s biggest stage in October.

There is also Rogers’ teammate up top in Ollie Watkins who has shown flashes of his brilliance in front of goal this season to date, despite failing to score for Emery’s men in their last five clashes.

He does still have a healthy return of five strikes next to his name from 11 Premier League contests, with Watkins also scoring this international break lining up alongside Rogers for the Three Lions versus Greece.

Not every top Villa star this season has been a guaranteed starter week in week out either, with Jhon Duran known now as a clinical striker in the West Midlands from off the substitutes bench.

Jhon Duran's value at Villa

Duran continues to look more and more like a bargain every game he dons a Villa strip, with the former Chicago Fire striker an Emery purchase for just £18m back in January 2023.

Whilst the Colombian would initially settle in well with five Premier League goals fired home during the 2023/24 season, this campaign has seen him become a man-possessed in front of goal, with many of Villa’s most memorable moments having the on-fire 20-year-old at the front and centre of them.

Of course, no article chronicling the insane rise of Duran at Villa would be complete without waxing lyrical about his clever strike versus Bayern Munich in the Champions League, which ended up winning the hosts the tight contest 1-0 over the Bavarian giants.

That inventive strike would come about after Duran had only been present on the Villa Park turf for 20 minutes, as he stepped up to replace Watkins in some style.

He has also been an electric option late on in games in the top-flight, with four goals coming the South American’s way despite the fact he hasn’t started a single contest in the division as only 278 minutes of action have been afforded to him.

The major impact the Villa number nine has managed to have on games has resulted in the likes of Arsenal reportedly being interested in his services, with a hefty €90m (£75m) price tag now above his head, according to reports from his native Colombia.

That is a crazy increase of 316%, when taking into account his original £18m fee, with that low fee now looking to be a golden bargain for Emery and Co.

Villa won’t want to part ways with the 20-year-old anytime soon, despite ridiculous amounts of money now being discussed, as Emery no doubt views his “weapon” – as he was once referred to by football talent scout Jacek Kulig – as integral to Villa ending this current season on a high.

India look to test bench strength as West Indies still search for their first win on tour

With Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant skipping the dead-rubber, India can give a chance to Ruturaj Gaikwad and Shreyas Iyer

Will we see more of Chahal in the powerplay?

Big pictureIndia will be mighty pleased with their gains from the 2-0 lead they have over West Indies, in the lead up to the T20 World Cup later this year in Australia. Their top order – including Virat Kohli – got off the blocks quicker, Suryakumar Yadav cemented his place further in the middle, Venkatesh Iyer provided the finishing touches India expected from him, Harshal Patel showed his death-bowling expertise, Bhuvneshwar Kumar proved he still had it in him, and Ravi Bishnoi bagged wickets with an economy under six in both games combined. With Kohli and Rishabh Pant skipping the dead-rubber on Sunday, India can now also give a chance to Ruturaj Gaikwad, who last played a T20I in July 2021, and Shreyas Iyer, on his new IPL home ground.West Indies, still winless on the tour, looked like they had narrowed the gap between the two teams on Friday night but they still need to smoothen some edges. In the opening game, they lost their footing after a good powerplay and could post only 157. In the second, they were chasing in dewy conditions but left too much for the end by posting just 41 runs in the powerplay and 73 in the first ten. They have also not found much support from their sixth bowler, possibly because they have played only two frontline bowlers and the rest of the job rests with their numerous allrounders. It made India’s chasing job easier when they needed 65 from eight overs in the opening game; in the second, they hammered 98 off the last eight.Form guideIndia WWWWW (last five completed T20Is, most recent first)

He got a chance in the XI in the first place only because Jason Holder wasn’t fit but retained his place with 2 for 14 from four overs, dismissing Rohit Sharma and Kishan, following it with 3 for 25 with the wickets of Rohit, Suryakumar and Kohli. With five wickets and an economy rate of just 4.87 in the series, West Indies have got a solid quota of four overs in the middle overs, against both right- and left-hand batters.Team newsWith Kohli and Pant not available for the third game, India can now pick Shreyas and Gaikwad and even try Deepak Hooda in place of Venkatesh. Babar's 90* in vain as Malik, Umar hand Kings fourth straight defeat

It is perhaps fitting in a season that hasn’t quite been Karachi Kings’ that they batted first when the chasing sides were winning, and now that the sides have begun defending scores, they found themselves pursuing one. However, there must come a time when they stop viewing these things as events that merely happen to them rather than events they actively partake in. Chasing or defending, Kings have been comfortably outplayed in each game. Peshawar Zalmi became the fourth side on Friday to leave the home team with a bloody nose, inflicting upon them a nine-run defeat. It came despite a valiant effort from Kings’ captain Babar Azam, who scored an unbeaten 63-ball 90 but sees his team on the brink of elimination all the same.Zalmi, batting first, never quite managed to cut loose, though Hazratullah Zazai did help them get off to a brisk start. Support from the other end was lacking amid some tidy new-ball bowling from Kings. But once Aamer Yamin was thumped for 21 in the fourth over, Zalmi cut away. By the time Umaid Asif dismissed Zazai off the final ball of the powerplay, Kings had reached 53.Once more, Kings pulled the game back in the middle overs, with Haider Ali and Kamran Akmal struggling for fluency, but an unbeaten 28-ball 52 from Shoaib Malik propelled Zalmi forward. Asif’s three wickets kept one end quiet, but Malik, and a little spurt at the death from Sherfane Rutherford, saw 47 come off the last four overs to set Kings 174 for victory. Those are the sorts of chases right in Babar’s wheelhouse, but he wasn’t helped much by the fall of two early wickets. Malik got rid of Sharjeel Khan with a beautiful offbreak before Mohammad Umar removed Sahibzada Farhan in the second over of the chase. An eye-catching 74-run stand between Ian Cockbain and Babar appeared to be setting the platform for a clinical Kings chase. But the home side was never quite able to rein the asking rate in, and Babar was struggling to find the dazzling array of strokes he usually unleashes at the death. It came down to Aamer Yamin to reduce the chasm between balls and runs, and a couple of clobbered sixes off Usman Qadir helped somewhat. But a tight 17th over from Salman Irshad was followed up by a destructive one from Umar, who removed Yamin and Imad Wasim in three balls to turn the game decisively in Zalmi’s favour. With the game effectively over as a contest, Babar finally found his range, finishing the game with three successive fours. That return of personal form, however, is unlikely to provide much succour to the Pakistan captain, who leads the franchise that props up the PSL table with four successive defeats.
