In an interview with , the Napoli boss stated that there was "no agreement whatsoever" with Juventus and that he refused to speak with any club before holding talks with Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis at the end of the season. Conte reaffirmed his dedication to Napoli and has two years left on his contract.

Conte's future had come under scrutiny toward the end of the 2024-25 season when reports surfaced regarding a potential reunion with the Old Lady while his team mounted a successful challenge for the Serie A title. However, he dismissed such claims and displayed his respect for Juventus while underlining his loyalty to Napoli.

WHAT ANTONIO CONTE SAID

Conte said: "What upsets me is that, just a month before the end of the season, there were talks of me going to Juventus, suggesting I could leave Napoli. I had no agreement whatsoever with Juventus. To anyone who tried to approach me, I said: ‘I won’t speak to anyone until I’ve talked with President De Laurentiis'."

When asked whether his Napoli stay would further upset Juventus fans, Conte replied: "Only the stupid ones can follow these things. For me, Juventus was and will always be Juventus, just like Lecce. No one will ever be able to undermine the feelings I have for my own story and where I grew up. It bothers me because many people take advantage of my public image; I realise my name carries a certain weight."

He also talked about how Napoli handled transfers last season, touching on the late arrivals of Scott McTominay, Billy Gilmour, David Neres and Romelu Lukaku, as well as the sale of Khvicha Kvaratskhelia to Paris Saint-Germain in the middle of the season.

“I think everyone is aware of what happened in January," he added. During the season, some things didn’t really make me happy. New players arrived only in the last week [of the summer window]. McTominay, Gilmour, Neres and Lukaku. Honestly, I didn’t like that. I believe I was good at accepting and not giving excuses to my players and myself. When you sign, there are honours and duties. When we spoke, they admitted there had been mistakes; it happens in the first year of marriage. As long as I was reassured on this aspect, we continued. We must defend the Scudetto and protect our work."

Prithvi Shaw signs with Northamptonshire

India batter to play the remainder of the County Championship and also the Royal London One-Day Cup

ESPNcricinfo staff01-Jul-2023

Prithvi Shaw has played 12 times for India since his debut in October 2018•BCCI

India batter Prithvi Shaw has secured a deal with Northamptonshire to play the remainder of the County Cricket season in England and also be a part of the Royal London One-Day Cup which starts in August. The 23-year-old is expected to join them at the end of the Duleep Trophy.Shaw is part of a strong West Zone side which is tipped to make it all the way to the final of the Duleep Trophy scheduled between July 12 and 16. He may have fallen down the pecking order for India but remains a prolific run-scorer for his state side, Mumbai, in all formats of the game. Shaw hasn’t played any first-class cricket for six months but he did make a career-best 379 off just 383 balls in a Ranji Trophy game against Assam in January 2023.The ability to score runs quickly is a big reason for Shaw’s rise through the ranks since winning the Under-19 World Cup for India in 2018. He had a stunning introduction to Test cricket, scoring a century on debut, but has since then struggled to deal with the quality of bowling on offer in international red-ball cricket. He played his last game as a first-choice pick for India in 2020 and only managed to get back when they had to send a second-string side to Sri Lanka in 2021.Most recently, Shaw was part of the Delhi Capitals in IPL 2023. He went through a six-game stretch where he was unable to score more than 15 runs which led to his being dropped there as well. He did return later in the tournament and immediately struck a half-century.Northamptonshire play in Division One of the English County Championship. They have won just one out of seven games so far and have seven more until the end of the season. This will be Shaw’s first time playing domestic cricket in the UK. He will become the fifth Indian to be part of the 2022-23 season following Cheteshwar Pujara (Sussex), Ajinkya Rahane (Leicestershire), Arshdeep Singh (Kent) and Navdeep Saini (Worcestershire).Shaw is a very attractive package in white-ball cricket, where hitting through the line of the ball is much easier. He is approaching 3000 List A runs at an average of 52.54 and a strike-rate of 123.27 with eight centuries, one of which is a double. Former India opener Gautam Gambhir, in 2022, had even tipped him to lead the country at some point in the future.

He's an "outstanding" talent: Aston Villa are brewing a homegrown Asensio

Aston Villa’s transfer business during the winter window could be the difference between them securing Champions League football next season or missing out.

The likes of Andres Garcia, Axel Disasi and Donyell Malen made the move to the Midlands in January, but it was the loan signings of Marcus Rashford and Marco Asensio which really turned heads.

Marco Asensio & Marcus Rashford for Aston Villa

The Englishman has provided four assists for the club since joining, yet the Spaniard has been even better…

Marco Asensio's Aston Villa career in numbers so far

A few years ago, Villa signing a player like Asensio would have been unheard of. Now, due to Unai Emery’s influence, these types of players are lining up to join the club.

He made just 16 appearances for Paris Saint-Germain before joining Villa on a six-month loan deal. It hasn’t taken him long to showcase his talents.

Across eight matches under Emery, the former Real Madrid sensation has already notched seven goals for the club.

The attacking midfielder has also averaged one key pass per game in the Premier League while succeeding with 75% of his dribble attempts. Having a game-changer like this at his disposal will only aid Emery in his quest to secure either a trophy or a spot in the Champions League next term.

Marco Asensio celebrates for Aston Villa

Why not both? Well, if Asensio continues to play like he has done over the previous few weeks, anything is possible, no doubt about that.

Might Villa have their homegrown version of the PSG star, however? Someone who could step up to the player in the near future to prove his worth.

Aston Villa's homegrown Asensio

The Villans certainly have a rich history of bringing through young talents in recent years, notably seeing Jack Grealish depart for mega money. Jacob Ramsey is another to have showcased his skills having learnt his trade in the youth ranks of Bodymoor Heath.

So, who’s the next cab off the rank? Well, Louie Barry is certainly one to watch out. He’s already made his debut for Villa, scoring against Liverpool in their FA Cup defeat way back in January 2021.

In The Pipeline

Football FanCast’s In the Pipeline series aims to uncover the very best youth players in world football.

Since then, he has spent periods out on loan, most notably at Stockport County. From August 2023 to January 2025, Barry scored 25 goals and registered seven assists in just 46 matches for the club, taking his chance well.

A centre-forward by trade, the youngster can also play out wide, hence similarities to Asensio can be made.

He was recalled by Villa during the winter transfer window, before being sent out to Hull City, who are currently playing in the Championship, for yet another temporary move.

Former Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor dubbed the striker as “outstanding” following his decision to extend his contract at the club until 2026 four years ago and as a result, next season will be massive for the 21-year-old.

Asensio will return to Paris, while Rashford may or may not still be at the club. He needs to impress significantly during pre-season to prove to Emery that he deserves a chance in the first team.

If he does, there is no reason why Barry cannot go on to become a solid squad player for Villa next season, gaining vital experience along the way.

That said, they will have to remain patient with his development. The young attacker’s time with Hull had to be cut short last month due to a knee-cartilage injury and he’s now undergoing rehab back at Villa.

Here’s hoping he can make a positive impact under Emery next term…

£20m star really failed at Leeds, now he's outperforming Gray after leaving

Since dropping into the Championship ahead of the 2023/24 season, Leeds United have had countless players who have benefitted from the relegation – gaining valuable game time as a result.

Crysencio Summerville is undoubtedly one of the biggest success stories, becoming a regular starter under Daniel Farke after the club dropped into the second tier.

The Dutchman registered 20 goals and nine assists in his 46 Championship appearances, winning the PFA Player of the Year award given the nature of his displays.

Leeds winger Crysencio Summerville

After failing to secure promotion last campaign, he would depart in a £25m deal to join West Ham United, netting the club a huge profit after his transfer to Elland Road back in 2021.

Summerville isn’t the only player who impressed in Yorkshire last season, with another first-team member thriving beyond all imagination in his debut year as a professional.

Archie Gray’s stats for Leeds in 2023/24

Academy graduate Archie Gray made his breakthrough into the senior ranks last year, managing to become a key member of Farke’s side as they lost in the play-off final.

The teenager would make 52 appearances across all competitions despite his tender age, featuring in various positions, but not looking out of place regardless of the role.

Despite originally being a central-midfielder, he would operate in a right-back position, but managed to nail it down as his own, with no one able to dislodge him from the side.

However, like Summerville, he would depart after the play-off final, leaving to join Tottenham Hotspur in a £40m deal, banking a mammoth profit on the teenage sensation.

He’s continued in such a vein this year, often featuring in an unnatural role under Ange Postecoglou, ultimately being outperformed by another former Whites player this campaign.

The former Leeds dud who’s managed to outperform Gray in 2024/25

During his time at Spurs, Postecoglou’s side have endured somewhat of an injury crisis, with the teenager having to operate a centre-back to gain first-team minutes.

Ange Postecoglou and Archie Gray look dejected

He’s still managed to produce some admirable figures despite his unfamiliar role, but he’s been outperformed by Weston McKennie, who failed to impress during his temporary stint at Elland Road.

The American would make 20 appearances after joining on loan from Juventus in January 2023, but was unable to prevent the club from relegation, leaving the Whites at the end of the season and moving back to Serie A.

McKennie, who’s valued at £20m by Transfermarkt, has featured 35 times across all competitions this campaign, notching five goals and three assists to date – starring in the Champions League along the way.

It’s safe to say the 26-year-old has revived his career at the top level after his failed stint in Yorkshire, massively outperforming Gray in the process, highlighting his excellent turnaround in form this year.

The Juve star has won more tackles per 90 despite Gray’s defensive role, whilst also making more interceptions – highlighting the defensive qualities he’s developed after moving away from Yorkshire.

He’s also registered more progressive carries and progressive passes, liking to get the ball into forward areas, whilst also winning more aerial battles per 90 – being the perfect box-to-box midfielder for the modern game.

Whilst there’s no denying that his temporary spell at Elland Road was a disappointment, he evidently just needed more time to succeed, with the former Schalke man arguably having one of his best-ever seasons in 2024/25.

It’s great to see him starring on a consistent basis in Italy, but he could’ve been a permanent addition for the Whites had they survived a couple of years ago, hoping to return to the promised land under Farke in the next few months.

The 32 teams in the competition have been divided into eight groups of four, within which each team will play the others in a single round-robin format: in the group stage, each participant will play three matches.

The top two teams in each group will advance to the round of 16, while the third-placed teams will be eliminated. In the event of a tie, the main criterion for determining the ranking will be goal difference.

The round of 16 will be played in a single match, as will the quarter-finals, the two semi-finals and the final that will decide the winner of the trophy. There will be no third-place play-off.

  • Group A

Group A consists of Porto from Portugal, Palmeiras from Brazil, Al-Ahly from Egypt and Inter Miami from the United States. All eyes will be on Leo Messi and Luis Suarez, who earned a place in the competition thanks to their victory in the 2024 MLS Supporters' Shield, the trophy awarded to the team with the most points in the MLS regular season.

On paper, Inter Miami will battle it out for top spot in the group with Porto, who are looking to bounce back after a very difficult season both at home and in the Europa League, where they were eliminated by Roma. The Portuguese side qualified thanks to their position in the UEFA rankings. Starting in the third row are Palmeiras, one of the strongest teams in South America for years and Libertadores champions in 2021, and Al-Ahly, who qualified for the World Cup thanks to their triumphs in the African Champions League in 2020-21, 2022-23 and 2023-24.

    Porto

A team in search of an identity. Andre Villas-Boas' stewardship has so far failed to produce results: the first year after Sergio Conceicao's departure brought only a Super Cup trophy, a mere consolation prize in a season that saw the finish the league in third place, 11 points behind champions Sporting. Things did not go much better in the Europa League, with elimination in the play-offs at the hands of Roma. In between, there was also a change of coach, reflecting the chaotic state the club has found itself in in recent months: Vitor Bruno, Conceicao's former assistant, who had taken over from him amid controversy, was replaced by Argentine Martin Anselmi, in his first experience in Europe. The Club World Cup, in which Porto hopes to at least make a good impression, could be an opportunity for redemption.

    THE COACH – Martin Anselmi

The 40-year-old Argentine was born in Rosario, the hometown of Lionel Messi, but also of Marcelo Bielsa and Tata Martino. He had never coached a European team before joining the . His masterpiece occurred at Independiente Del Valle, which he led to victory in the Copa Sudamericana and Recopa Sudamericana between 2022 and 2023. Porto won a legal battle with Mexican side Cruz Azul to secure his services.

    THE STAR – Samu Aghehowa

Samuel Omorodion Aghehowa: this is the full name of the 21-year-old Spanish centre forward, who is of Nigerian origin. Last summer, he was linked with half of Europe, including Inter, Roma, Napoli and Chelsea. In the end, Atletico Madrid, who had already loaned him to Alaves, sold him to Porto. He was one of the most positive notes of the season: he struck 25 goals in total, 19 of which were scored in the league.

THE PLAYER TO WATCH – Rodrigo Mora

Born in 2007, Rodrigo Mora came of age at the beginning of May, but last season he amply demonstrated that he could become one of the most sought-after young players on the market, as well as a potential star. In his first year as a professional, he scored 10 goals in the league. He is a quick attacking midfielder or winger, just under five foot six inches tall. Decisive in tight spaces and not shy about dribbling, he has no shortage of personality.

TYPICAL FORMATION (3-4-2-1): Diogo Costa; Perez, Ze Pedro, Marcano; Joao Mario, Varela, Eustaquio, Francisco Moura; Rodrigo Mora, Pepe; Aghehowa. Coach: Anselmi

Misbah-ul-Haq set to work with the PCB again

Former Pakistan captain, coach and selector in line to head new cricket committee in the board

ESPNcricinfo staff24-Jul-2023Former Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq is set to return to the PCB nearly two years after he resigned as head coach of the national side.ESPNcricinfo understands Misbah is likely to be appointed the head of a cricket committee that will soon be formed. He will also be the advisor on cricketing affairs to the current head of the PCB, Zaka Ashraf. The impending appointment is the first major move the new administration will make in the running of Pakistan cricket. Ashraf was appointed head of the PCB’s new management committee earlier this month, after a brief legal tangle following the end of Najam Sethi’s stint as caretaker chairman in late June.Misbah’s role is expected to be an honorary one, which means he will not be paid a salary. The decision was finalised after he met with Ashraf on Monday. It means a return for Misbah nearly two years after he resigned in September 2021, shortly after Ramiz Raja was appointed PCB chairman. Since then, he has worked as an expert and analyst on various TV channels, commitments that he is likely to continue to pursue.Misbah also served as Pakistan coach and chief selector in September 2019, replacing Mickey Arthur as head coach. He had played under Arthur when he was captain of the Test side for a year, with Pakistan becoming the top-ranked side in the world during that time. After his retirement, Misbah was part of a committee that played a role in Arthur’s removal as head coach and he subsequently took over the role, as well as the responsibility of being the chief selector. When Arthur was appointed team director earlier this year, Misbah said the move was a “slap on Pakistan cricket,” not so much that it was Arthur but for the nature of his role and appointment. Arthur has remained in his job as Derbyshire coach, while overseeing the Pakistan side with Grant Bradburn as head coach. “It’s a slap on our cricket system that we are not able to find a high-profile full-time coach,” Misbah told ESPNcricinfo in February. “It’s a shame that the best ones do not want to come and we insist on having someone who is looking at Pakistan as a second option.”I blame our own system, which is vulnerable enough with so many weak lines for anyone to exploit it. We are to be blamed ourselves that we have disrespected and discredited our own people to make a bad image. The present and former lot don’t respect each other, with media and former players using their own YouTube channels for ratings, damaging the credibility and value of our cricket which, as a result, gives an impression that we are not capable.”

Jemimah Rodrigues bosses Bangladesh, India draw level

Jemimah Rodrigues slammed a rapid 86 and followed up with four wickets in 3.1 overs – both career-bests for her, with bat and ball – to propel India to a 108-run win against Bangladesh in sunny Mirpur on Wednesday. India thus levelled the three-match series 1-1, the series decider to be played on Saturday.Playing in contrasting conditions to the rain-hit opening game, Rodrigues, along with Devika Vaidya spun a web to trigger a dramatic collapse from Bangladesh – they went from 106 for 3 to 120 all out in the span of 38 balls. Vaidya finished with figures of 3 for 30 in her eight overs.Earlier, Harmanpreet Kaur’s calculative fifty worked alongside Rodrigues’ breezy knock to help India to a competitive 228 for 8 after they were put in. Harmanpreet had to retire hurt in the 37th over after she was hit on the left wrist at the non-striker’s end while completing a single. She walked off the field having faced 80 balls for 48 runs, before coming back in the 47th over and finishing on 52. With Harmanpreet not taking the field at the beginning of Bangladesh’s innings, Smriti Mandhana stood in as captain.

Seven wickets for 14 runs – Bangladesh’s big collapse

At the end of 28 overs, Bangladesh needed 126 runs from 132 balls with seven wickets in hand, and they had two set-batters keeping the scorecard ticking. Fargana Hoque had played 79 deliveries for 46 runs by then, and Ritu Moni was on 25 off 38 balls. The pair had already done a repair job after Bangladesh were left reeling at 14 for 2, Meghna Singh and Deepti Sharma taking a wicket apiece early in the chase.Mandhana then threw the ball to Vaidya. The change in bowling worked as the legspinner removed Fargana with turn and bounce last ball of the 29th over. That was with the help of Yastika Bhatia, who was quick to remove the bails when Fargana had stepped out to a delivery that spun away. Mandhana then made it a double-change in the bowling by handing the ball to Rodrigues, the part-time offspinner (with a grand total of one wicket in ODIs at that point). She had her second ODI wicket in her very first over of the day, when Bhatia dislodged the bails once again to dismiss a charging Moni.Vaidya picked up her second wicket in the following over, Bhatia in action once again stumping legspinner Rabeya Khan, and now the slide had well and truly begun. Two overs later, Rodrigues, who kept pitching the ball full, got two to turn in sharply to send Bangladesh captain Nigar Sultana and Nahida Akter back in the same over. At 114 for 8, Bangladesh were all but done.

Rodrigues, Harmanpreet lift India

The surface for the second ODI was spin-friendly with some awkward bounce on offer, as compared to the first match which was played in overcast conditions in which India were bowled out for 113.India still had to toil for runs, but Rodrigues and Harmanpreet showcased temperament to negate Bangladesh’s spinners. They had lost Priya Punia in the fifth over, undone by a swinging delivery from Marufa Akter, and Bhatia – run out for 15 in the 11th over. Mandhana worked her way to 36 off 58 before deceived by Rabeya’s length in the 22nd over.It was a long grind for Rodrigues and Harmanpreet from there, and the duo concentrated on rotating the strike – the Indian captain had said they needed to do more of this after their defeat in the first game. They had put on 73 runs for the third wicket before Harmanpreet retired hurt. With Harleen Deol – who replaced allrounder Pooja Vastrakar and was one of the two changes that India made from their XI from the first ODI – at the other end, Rodrigues kept the scorecard moving and found boundaries by making good use of sweep and cut shots. These two stitched together a 58-run partnership at a brisk pace.Once Deol was dismissed for a 36-ball 25, Harmanpreet walked back in to complete her 18th ODI fifty. Rodrigues increased the tempo after reaching her fifty, hitting six fours from overs 44 to 49 before being dismissed by Nahida Akter in the penultimate over.Sultana Khatun bowled an outstanding final over to dismiss Harmanpreet and Deepti, and Sneh Rana was run out. While India lost five wickets for 29 runs, they also scored 67 runs in the final ten overs and that proved to be more than enough.
