A report by Portuguese newspaper , suggests the summer's longest-running transfer saga shows no sign of resolution. While Arsenal, Sporting and Gyokeres' representatives have agreed an initial fee of €70m (£61m/$82m) plus €10m in add-ons (£8.7m/$11.6m) for the player's services, the terms surrounding the additional fees have yet to be ironed out.

Sporting want those terms to be easily achievable, a request which Arsenal has reportedly resisted. reports that just €3m of those add-ons are considered "easily achieveable" by the selling club. That disconnect is apparently enough to ensure the deal is "at risk of collapse," with Record reporting that Gyokeres and his agent Hasan Cetinkaya may offer a public intervention to keep the deal alive.

DID YOU KNOW?

Gyokeres was considered to be one of Europe's hottest properties heading into the summer transfer window, however it quickly became apparent that Arsenal and Manchester United were the only credible suitors for his signature. As the Gunners pulled ahead in the chase, questions over the Swede's ability to cut it in the Premier League have increased. Despite that, he remains sure of his abilities, saying in a recent interview that he belonged at the top table with the likes of Harry Kane, Robert Lewandowski and Erling Haaland.

The 27-year-old has pushed for this move. On Sunday, he declined to return to Sporting's pre-season training, signalling his desire for the transfer to go ahead. With that in mind, a public statement urging negotiations between his current and prospective employers could well be coming.

Shoaib Bashir 'let emotions fall out' after shock England call-up

Offspinner picked for England tour of India after six first-class matches

Shoaib Bashir admitted he cried after receiving the call informing him of his selection for England men’s Test series against India. The Somerset offspinner was a shock inclusion in the 16-man squad just six months after making his professional debut. Bashir has just six first-class matches to his name, all for Somerset, with 10 wickets at an average of 67.He was selected on a Lions training camp in the UAE as one of seven spinners and impressed throughout on surfaces created to replicate what is likely to await England in India. He capped off the three weeks with 6 for 42 in a two-innings match against Afghanistan A, leaving an impression on Test coach Brendon McCullum and managing director Rob Key who travelled over to run the rule over potential spin options for the Test squad.”You (could) see that there’s something different there, or that looks special,” explained Key on the punt taken to select Bashir. It was McCullum who phoned the 20-year-old with the good news. While Bashir sensed he had performed well on the Lions tour in front of the right people, he was overcome with emotion when told he had made the cut for the five-match series in the New Year.”When I got the call, I let my emotions fall out,” Bashir told BBC Radio Somerset. “I was very numb inside – I cried. It’s just so special and I’m so grateful and thankful for the opportunity I’ve been given.”I’m very grateful. It’s something that I’ve wanted to do since I started playing cricket, since I started holding a bat, since I started bowling a ball – I wanted to represent my country. For this to happen at such an early part in my career is very special.Related

“I think they were keeping a close eye on me since I made my debut. In Abu Dhabi they saw what I could do on a different surface to England, more for India. I felt like I showed a good representation of what I can do as well. I think that’s what caught the eye.”Bashir’s route to international recognition has not been straightforward or guaranteed. He had been part of the Surrey pathway since Under-9 level before being released almost a decade later, trialling briefly at Middlesex before stabilising himself at Berkshire. It was for Berkshire’s Under-18s that he first came up on Somerset’s radar, taking 5 for 26 in a 50-over semi-final against them. He was subsequently offered a two-match trial in their second team – the first locally against Surrey at Guildford, where he lives, taking 3 for 51 in a rain-affected game. He then took 4 for 44 against Warwickshire which led to his first professional contract. He came to prominence on his first-class debut against Essex this summer when his maiden over featured two deliveries that beat Sir Alastair Cook. Though he would only end up averaging a wicket an innings in Division One of the County Championship, there was clear promise. Watching on from afar, selectors were enticed by traits they sought for Indian pitches – specifically, Bashir’s high release-point from a 6’4″ frame, driving the ball into the surface without compromising on turn or flight.”My journey has been very special,” Bashir said. “Everyone has their own journeys but I feel like my journey is for me. My journey started from when I was in the Surrey pathway from U9s to U17s when I got released. It was probably the rock bottom of my career. I didn’t think I’d be playing at any kind of level at that point.”Thankfully I joined Berkshire, minor counties team, and actually really enjoyed my time there. I met some of my closest mates, to this day, and I think when you enjoy playing cricket, you put in performances.”Looking back now, it’s just so special. For any young kids out there, just work hard, and if you really want something, you put in the time, things will happen.”

Dunkley, Capsey and Day help Stars deny Scorchers

Amy Jones kept Scorchers’ hopes alive in the chase but did not get enough support from the other end

Tristan Lavalette22-Nov-2023Sophia Dunkley smashed a half-century before Melbourne Stars’ disciplined attack bowled superbly at the WACA ground to dent Perth Scorchers’ hopes of a top two finish in the WBBL.Chasing what seemed to be a modest total of 158, Scorchers’ strong top-order crashed to 19 for 3 with openers Beth Mooney and Sophie Devine both uncharacteristically failing.Stars seamers Kim Garth and Annabel Sutherland conjured swing with the new ball on a surface that appeared juicier under the lights.Scorchers were left to rely on England star allrounder Nat Sciver-Brunt to haul them back into the contest. There was extra spice after Sciver-Brunt’s controversial signing with Scorchers having not made herself available in the overseas draft where she would have been a retention pick for Stars.Sciver-Brunt, who had only scored 64 runs in her last four innings, played several expansive strokes to raise the spirits of Scorchers’ faithful. But she couldn’t kick on after she was stumped on 24 after failing to connect a flighted delivery from offspinner Alice Capsey. They were always up against it from there despite the efforts from Amy Jones, who made 42 but it was not enough as Scorchers lost their second straight match.Left-arm spinner Sophie Day rolled through Scorchers’ lower-order to finish with 4 for 26 and complete Stars’ 33-run upset victory.Sophie Day led Stars’ bowling charge with a four-for•Getty ImagesA game behind league leaders Adelaide Strikers, Scorchers are clinging tenuously to second spot as jockeying for finals positioning heats up.Still without skipper Meg Lanning, who remained on personal leave, Stars’ finals hopes were already over but they produced a formidable effort.Stand-in skipper Sutherland elected to bat in oppressive conditions with temperatures hovering at 36 degrees when the game started.Stars had to initially fend off probing new ball bowling from quick Chloe Ainsworth, who knocked over opener Maia Bouchier in the second over. But apart from Ainsworth’s menacing swing, Stars were at ease with Dunkley and Capsey taking control.Dunkley, particularly, decided to go the aerial route especially against Scorchers’ slew of spinners who weren’t getting assistance from the benign surface.Scorchers skipper Devine turned to Sciver-Brunt, who bowled for the first time this season in Scorchers’ previous game against Sydney Thunder. She bowled a tight line and length, but Dunkley was in an aggressive mood as Stars eyed a big total at the midway mark of the innings.Even Ainsworth couldn’t limit Dunkley when she returned to the attack and was smashed for a six over long-on as Scorchers appeared to be going through the emotions.Dunkley sped past her half-century leaving Capsey in her wake. Capsey struggled to regain her earlier rhythm and she holed out to long-on to gift Sciver-Brunt her first wicket of the season. It triggered a collapse with Dunkley falling in the 15th over before Tess Flintoff was bowled first ball by seamer Piepa Cleary. The smattering of fans braving the famous grass banks were finally up and about although Cleary was unable to claim a hat-trick. Stars fell away at the backend, but their attack brilliantly defended the total to inflict a costly loss for Scorchers.

'They are our players' – Ruben Amorim opens door for return of 'bomb squad' trio of Antony, Jadon Sancho & Alejandro Garnacho despite banishment from Man Utd's pre-season tour

Ruben Amorim has opened the door for banished trio Antony, Jadon Sancho, and Alejandro Garnacho to return if Manchester United can't sell them.

  • Antony, Sancho & Garnacho in 'bomb squad'

  • Club still looking to sell banished trio

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The United trio have not been included in the club's pre-season tour to the United States and were training separately away from the first-team group as part of the 'bomb squad'. While the club are looking to sell all three of them for the right price, head coach Amorim has not ruled out reintegrating them back into the squad when the transfer window shuts on September 1.

    WHAT AMORIM SAID

He said: "Some players have to find a new place to have more space in the team, and other players clearly show they want a new challenge and want new teams. We are just allowing these players to have time to think and to decide. If we reach a point where they have to join the team, they will join the team, because they are our players. I know for a fact, these people, Omar, Jason, and the club, have a number for these players. If they don’t reach that, they will be Manchester United players, no doubt about that. I understand that clubs are waiting for the last minute, but they can have a surprise. I’m ready to receive the players; they have more competition, more competition. If you want to play in the World Cup next year, you need to play. So I'm really happy with that because I have more options. If they have to fight each other to play, for me, it’s perfect. In any team, if you see the best teams in the world, you feel the bond between all the players, and that is really important. Then I think we need to remind ourselves how special it is to be at Manchester United. That is my feeling, it’s the best club in the world, and it should be for everyone on the pitch and everyone at the club, and I really like that feeling. I really like to be in a group that is healthy."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

United are desperately trying to raise funds from the sales of Antony, Sancho, and Garnacho – along with Tyrell Malacia – but for now, they remain Red Devils players. If they do stay, Amorim has stressed the importance of having a "healthy" squad that want to play for the club. That may be a tall order with this group, however.

Bancroft: Opening the batting is a specialist position

He is hopeful of being the player chosen to replace David Warner in the Test side

Clarke: Warner seemed ‘bothered’ by the criticism

Cameron Bancroft insists a specialist opener would be best placed to take over from the retiring David Warner, believing experience at the top is crucial in the difficult role.Australia have named an unchanged 13-man squad for this week’s third Test against Pakistan at the SCG, but crunch time is coming in the quest to replace Warner as he bids farewell to the Test arena.Bancroft remains one of the leading contenders, with selectors set to make a decision ahead of the Adelaide Test against West Indies on January 17.Related

Marcus Harris and Matt Renshaw can also make a fair claim for the job, but coach Andrew McDonald has refused to rule out going with a non-specialist opener instead.McDonald on Saturday left the door ajar for Cameron Green to replace Warner, while another batter could theoretically shift to the top to accommodate Green’s return. But when asked whether it would be an easier job for a specialist opener, Bancroft was adamant that was the case.”Yeah, absolutely,” he told AAP. “I’ve opened the batting in Shield cricket for over 10 years. It’s not an easy place to bat.  It comes with challenges, and my whole career I’ve problem-solved trying to find ways to flourish in those sort of circumstances.”Some players have switched and gone and opened the batting and done really well. But not everyone puts their hand up to go and open the batting.”I feel like it probably is a specialist position and it’s certainly a really challenging one. But a very rewarding one as well.”Cameron Bancroft has had two very productive Sheffield Shield seasons•Getty Images

Bancroft’s comments come after Ricky Ponting, Justin Langer and Mike Hussey each made similar arguments this week.If Australia do go with a specialist opener, Bancroft has made the strongest case of any contender in recent years. He was the leading run-scorer in last summer’s Sheffield Shield with 945 runs at an average of 59.06, and again tops this season’s charts with 512 at 56.88.Harris and Renshaw have both been part of Australian squads in that time, while Bancroft has not featured since being dropped during a poor 2019 Ashes.”I’ve had some conversations [with selectors] over the last 12 months or so and asked some questions about what I can do to improve,” Bancroft said.  “I’m always looking to improve and get better. I wanted that feedback from them.”But I guess it always comes down to scoring runs, so I’ve just tried to go out and do the best I can no matter what format of the game that I’ve been playing.”Bancroft is also hopeful runs in the BBL will help his cause, with Sydney Thunder to play games against Hobart and Perth before the Adelaide Test. The opener is the competition’s second leading run-scorer, with 181 from his opening five games.”Runs are runs,” Bancroft said.  “There’s no red-ball cricket, obviously. So coming out and playing in the Big Bash is the format of the game that I can play in right now.”Selectors have always talked about players scoring runs and things like that, and that runs count. And I’d agree with that.”Anyone that’s in a position to go to the next level, you want them to be scoring runs. I’ve just tried to tried to do that no matter what format of the game.  Hopefully that puts me in a position to be selected.”

Trott sees 'promising signs' in Ibrahim's 114 and Afghanistan's third-day domination

If Afghanistan got to play more Test cricket, you’d see them rise as quickly in that format as they have in the others. This was the line of thinking their coach Jonathan Trott presented after their first Test against Sri Lanka, which Afghanistan lost by ten wickets but dominated portions of.In any case, Afghanistan have won three of their first eight Tests, which, going by how other sides have performed in their first few years of Test cricket, is an outstanding start to their journey. In the Test at the SSC, Afghanistan had dominated day three almost entirely, with Ibrahim Zadran hitting a maiden Test century while forging big partnerships with Noor Ali Zadran and Rahmat Shah. They fell away rapidly on day four, but had had nine wickets in hand overnight, and were only 43 runs from establishing a lead.Related

  • Jayasuriya, Asitha and batters lead Sri Lanka to comfortable win

“This is our eighth Test as a nation, and this year Sri Lanka play ten Tests,” Trott said after the match. “At the moment, you see in the T20 and ODI formats, the more we get to play the better, and the bigger pool of talent we can select from. But for us to come here and go neck and neck with Sri Lanka, and yesterday dominate the day, shows promising signs for the future.”But, as Trott pointed out, Afghanistan didn’t have their full complement of players to choose from for Tests, with the likes of Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Fazalhaq Farooqi and Rahmanullah Gurbaz currently playing the ILT20 in the UAE. They were also without Rashid Khan, their star spinner, as he recovers from a back surgery.”There are a lot of other players we can call upon to play Test cricket, but they’re all still playing the leagues,” Trott said. “I think Sri Lanka faces the same issues. So do all cricketing the nations. It’s about when those Tests are played and the availability of players, and if the players feel like the balance between leagues and playing for the national side is.”It’s a double-edged sword, but I would like to have a full batch of players to be able to select from. Hopefully for Ireland [whom Afghanistan play in a one-off Test beginning February 28], we can get that right.”Cricketers have a short window in their careers, and they’re trying to set themselves up and trying to find the right balance in terms of nation and league. The more money there is in Test cricket the more attractive it’s going to be for younger players. That’s my one fear, that younger players aren’t going to see it as a route to playing. Test cricket is so unique. It’s such a shame if that isn’t protected and nurtured as much as possible.”On the Test itself, Trott poured substantial praise on Ibrahim, whose 114 was the centrepiece of an Afghanistan second innings that prevented them from being completely blown away in this match. This was the fourth Test hundred from an Afghanistan batter, and the first from one of their younger batters – Ibrahim is 22.”Yesterday, he spent the whole day in the field,” Trott said of Ibrahim. “He fielded in the morning on the third day of a Test with humidity and the temperature close to 40 degrees. But then also the mental strength it takes as well – getting nought in the first innings, and then being able to field for 100-plus overs, and then being able to spend the amount of time he did at the crease is credit to him as a youngster.”It’s a good example for the rest of the players of Afghanistan – the standards of Test cricket, and the fitness you need to call upon. The way that he trains is second to none, and he’s a great ambassador for the game, and the country.”
