'They changed the rules because of me' – Spain star Marc Cucurella reflects on controversial handball against Germany that was 'talked about all over the world'

Marc Cucurella has denied he meant his controversial and decisive handball in Spain's Euro 2024 clash against Germany that sparked a rule change.

Cucurella has reflected on one of the most controversial moments of Euro 2024, his handball against Germany in the quarter-final. The Chelsea left-back was at the centre of worldwide debate after the ball struck his arm inside the box, but no penalty was given. Spain went on to snatch a dramatic 2-1 victory thanks to Mikel Merino’s stoppage-time header before eventually defeating England in the final. The Chelsea full-back says that UEFA later used the incident in referee briefings, explaining that it became a case study for amending the handball rule.

The Spaniard's incident was one of the defining moments of Euro 2024. The decision not to award a penalty sparked outrage in Germany but highlighted the subjectivity of handball calls under the laws at the time. UEFA’s subsequent change reflects football’s ongoing struggle to balance fairness and clarity in officiating. For Cucurella, the episode is now part of his legacy, but it also comes during one of the best spells of his career, with a Club World Cup, UEFA Conference League triumph, and a new Chelsea contract under his belt.

WHAT CUCURELLA SAID

Looking back on the incident, Cucurella told : “Yes, that handball has been talked about all over the world. In fact, UEFA recently came to give us a talk and used my handball against Germany as an example. And they told me it was because of me that they had to change the rules.”

He also made it clear he never intended to handle the ball: “No, really not! They took a shot at me from close range and the ball hit me, but I didn't mean to hit it with my hand, I didn't do it on purpose. Man, I would have been the most hated guy in Spain…”

Cucurella now turns his attention to Spain’s 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign, with La Roja facing Bulgaria and Turkey in back-to-back away fixtures. After establishing himself as a key figure under Enzo Maresca, the 27-year-old could be set for his first-ever World Cup appearance next summer.

Fenerbahce enter Ederson race! Turkish giants aim to hijack deal for Man City goalkeeper after €10m Galatasaray bid rejected

If Ederson leaves Manchester City before the transfer deadline, it opens up the Premier League giants to pursuing Paris Saint-Germain superstar Gianluigi Donarumma.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

has reported that Fenerbahce are now "working on" a deal to sign Ederson. It comes after fierce Istanbul rivals Galatasaray failed in their own €10 million (£8.7m/$11.7m) approach, raising the possibility that the Brazilian could yet depart City after eight years in Manchester.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Having made 372 City appearances, Ederson has played second fiddle to summer signing James Trafford in the early weeks of 2025-26, even after recovering from the sickness bug that ruled him out of the season opener. While the preference was thought to be going into the campaign with Ederson and Trafford, the club has rarely stood in the way of players who want to leave. In that scenario, City would suddenly have the scope to go after Donnarumma, who is looking for a transfer out of PSG after coach Luis Enrique decided to go in a different direction.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Ederson is into the final 12 months of his City contract and might be considered likely to leave next summer anyway. He has been heavily linked with a move since last year when there was interest from the Saudi Pro League.

    WHAT NEXT?

If Ederson leaves, Romano additionally reported that Donnarumma "will join" City with a degree of certainty. The transfer window for Turkish clubs remains open until September 13, meaning there is no rush for Fenerbahce to complete a deal – or even Galatasaray return with a rival approach. But City would have to have strong indication that he will definitely leave, because their consequential approach for Donnarumma would need to be done much sooner, by 7pm (BST) on Monday night.

Chelsea dealt huge injury blow as Mayra Ramirez is ruled OUT for remainder of 2025 after undergoing surgery on eve of new WSL season

Chelsea’s Women’s Super League title defence has been rocked before a ball has even been kicked as star striker Mayra Ramirez will miss the start of the campaign after undergoing hamstring surgery. The 25-year-old pulled up clutching her right leg in the first half of Chelsea’s pre-season clash with AC Milan on Saturday. Looking visibly distraught, she was forced off and replaced by Chloe Sarwie.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Ramirez arrived from Levante in January 2024 for what was then a world-record transfer fee in women’s football. The deal was triggered after Kerr’s devastating ACL injury left Chelsea scrambling for cover. The Colombian hit the ground running, contributing three goals and two assists during the second half of the 2023-24 campaign. She followed that up last season with four goals and three assists across 17 league appearances as Chelsea powered their way to an unbeaten domestic treble. Now, just as she was expected to spearhead the Blues’ attack once again, Ramirez finds herself sidelined.

    WHAT CHELSEA SAID

Chelsea put out a statement which read: "Chelsea can confirm Mayra Ramirez has undergone surgery on a hamstring injury sustained during our friendly against AC Milan last weekend. The striker returned to Chelsea this summer after reaching the Women's Copa America final with Colombia, and she was selected to start in last weekend's friendly against the Italian side. Unfortunately, Mayra had to be replaced in the 34th minute after sustaining an injury during the match that has required surgery. She will now begin a period of rehabilitation with the support of our medical team and be sidelined for a period of time."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

In response, Chelsea have accelerated their pursuit of USWNT winger Alyssa Thompson, as revealed by . The 19-year-old, currently at Angel City, has been on Chelsea’s radar for months. But with Ramirez unavailable, the urgency to seal the deal has increased.

Ele entrou no último jogo.

'I should have scored more!' – Denzel Dumfries gets self-critical about new-found eye for goal as Netherlands scorer admits he hurt himself celebrating against Poland

Denzel Dumfries joked that he "should have scored more" for Netherlands after netting his 11th international goal in Thursday's draw against Poland.

Netherlands draw against Poland in Qualifying roundDumfries not satisfied with his performanceSays he sustained a minor injury during goal celebrationFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

Netherlands and Poland kicked off their World Cup qualifying campaign with a hard-fought 1-1 draw in Rotterdam. The match saw Dutch dominance in terms of possession and opportunities, with Dumfries giving the home side the lead with a powerful header from a corner in the 28th minute. However, the Inter full-back wasn't completely satisfied with his goal as he claimed he could've scored more given his recent goal scoring spells.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Dumfries has recently scored several important goals, especially in the 2024-25 season. He scored multiple goals in January 2025 against Bologna, Empoli, and Lecce, including a brace against Atalanta in the Supercoppa semifinals. He further extended his goal scoring run scoring two goals against Barcelona in the Champions League Semifinals and later also provided two assists in the second leg.

That improvement has been reflected with the national team, too. Dumfries has 66 caps to his name, but his first goal did not come until three years after his debut. Of his 11 strikes for the national team, five have come in the last 12 months. Rather than celebrate the improvement, though, Dumfries opted to chastise himself for not scoring more earlier in his career.

WHAT DUMFRIES SAID

Asked about his goal in the first half, Dumfries told : "That ball came, and then you just have to nod. My 11th goal in 66 international matches. Yes, I've scored a lot in recent matches, especially. What does that say? That I should have scored more in my first international matches."

The defender also admitted to a humorous detail about his powerful celebration. He confirmed that while celebrating his goal, he "hit the advertising board, which hurt a bit, but it's no problem."

On the game overall, he added: "We had chances and plenty of opportunities to create danger. But you know that things can always go wrong when it's 1-0. We should have made it 2-0. Poland has players who play at the top level; they can always strike, you know that. So the feeling is mixed. I think our play on the pitch was good."

'We've got the fast bowlers to exploit the conditions' – Angelo Mathews

He backs Sri Lanka to make a serious push for victory at the Hagley Oval on Monday

Sri Lanka has the seam-bowling weaponry to make a serious push for victory on Monday. So believes Angelo Mathews, their centurion from day four, who was most responsible for setting New Zealand a target of 285.In the 17 overs Sri Lanka bowled at New Zealand before stumps, the seamers were probing and disciplined. Kasun Rajitha claimed the wicket of Devon Conway, and New Zealand could not score at more than 1.64 an over, finishing at 28 for 1, with Tom Latham and Kane Williamson the overnight batters. In the first innings, Sri Lanka’s seamers had had New Zealand at 188 for 6, before an outstanding Daryl Mitchell hundred, and lower-order hitting from Matt Henry pushed the hosts into a narrow lead.”We’ve got the fast bowlers to exploit the conditions,” Mathews said after play. “We’ve got some fantastic fast bowlers in the group, and we have the belief that if the batters get the runs on the board, the fast bowlers will definitely come into play, with the conditions. They’ve done exactly that.”We’ve given ourselves a great chance to win the Test match. We have to turn up tomorrow and just go for it. The game is evenly poised. Latham and Williamson – we all know they are world class. We need to strike early to get into the game. If we can open one end, we can put a lot of pressure on the Kiwis.”Related

Mathews says SL not getting enough Tests, especially this year

Mathews' 115 helps SL set NZ a stiff target

The surface did not appear especially treacherous on day four – though there was still some movement off the seam for the quicks. The Hagley Oval surface has in the past tended to get lower and slower as a match goes on, though spinners have been effective at this venue late in the game as well.”You can’t predict a wicket 100%, but there was variable bounce today,” Mathews said. “But hoping he [Prabath Jayasuriya] can hit the rough spots. Especially to the left-hander there’s a big rough on either side. The spinner also might come into play – you never know.”His own 115 off 235 balls, which was his 14th Test ton and his second in successive tours of New Zealand, Mathews put down to experience. It was a vital innings, during which he forged a 105-run partnership with Dinesh Chandimal, then put on 60 alongside Dhananjaya de Silva.Kasun Rajitha and Lahiru Kumara shared five wickets between them in the first innings•AFP/Getty Images

Although in the first innings Sri Lanka rattled along at almost four an over, they were prevented from scoring freely for much of day four, by some disciplined New Zealand bowling.”The more you play the more you learn, and I’ve played a lot of cricket in New Zealand, and in Christchurch as well,” Mathews said. “I know what kinds of conditions we are getting here. Credit should go to the New Zealand bowlers as well. After Neil Wagner got injured, the other three fast bowlers gave nothing away. It was hard work out there, but they kept pegging away, and we had to work extremely hard to get those runs. We had to keep grinding all day, which we did, I thought.”Scoring was especially difficult before lunch, when New Zealand sent down 28 overs and conceded just 67 (a run rate of 2.39).”You come set to play certain shots because they aren’t giving anything away,” Mathews said. “You kind of know what you get from each bowler, so you kind of mentally plan it out. The first session they gave nothing away at all. We had to keep fighting for sngles and twos – forget about the fours. We all know [Tim] Southee is a world-class bowler, and no matter how tired he is he lands it on the spot. Matt Henry bowled extremely well, as well as [Blair] Tickner though he’s young and new to the Test arena, he bowled with a lot of gas. We knew what’s coming with each and every bowler, and we had to plan accordingly.”Sri Lanka must win this match, and the next one, to stand any chance of making the World Test Championship (WTC) final at The Oval later this year. Mathews lauded the work of coach Chris Silverwood and captain Dimuth Karunaratne for creating a vibe through which a side that is not particularly studded with standout players, has been able to come close to making a major final.”The captain and the coach play a major part in the team’s environment. And us seniors will back it up with them. Chris Silverwood and his support staff and the captain has done a fantastic job in creating a great environment, to play cricket with a lot of freedom. That’s what you want – to put everything aside, and go out there and enjoy yourselves, which we’re absolutely doing.”

Melbourne Stars' Zampa requests trade to crosstown rivals Renegades

Legspinner Adam Zampa is on the verge of being traded from Melbourne Stars, the franchise he captained this Big Bash League season, to crosstown rivals Renegades.Renegades, on Thursday, confirmed that Zampa had requested a trade to the club. Still seeking an elusive title, with Hobart Hurricanes the only other franchise who have never lifted a BBL trophy, Stars are set for a major revamp with Zampa poised to be traded for Renegades wicketkeeper-batter Sam Harper.”This trade would allow us to target several other quality players, and we look forward to making a number of announcements regarding new signings once the contracting window re-opens,” Stars general manager Blair Crouch said.No trade can be processed, and binding agreements between clubs cannot be made, during Cricket Australia’s contracting embargo period. According to a Renegades statement, the clubs have exchanged a non-binding correspondence for the trade to go ahead once the window opens for next season.Zampa, Australia’s frontline white ball spinner, took the leadership reins after regular captain Glenn Maxwell missed the entire season due to a serious knee injury. The Zampa-led Stars endured another disappointing campaign to finish last on the BBL ladder.Having initially played with Sydney Thunder and Adelaide Strikers, Zampa joined Stars in 2015 and the move elevated his career leading to being a regular in Australia’s white ball teams. The 30-year-old Zampa ended a three-year first-class drought in December when he appeared for New South Wales against Victoria, but was subsequently overlooked for Australia’s tour of India.Renegades are hoping the recruitment of Zampa can help build on a bounce-back season, where they qualified for the finals series after three consecutive bottom-placed finishes. While their attack is set to regenerate, Stars’ batting will be strengthened by the inclusion of hard-hitting Harper who will return to his initial BBL franchise.Harper was part of Renegades’ title-winning team in 2018-19, where they thrillingly defeated Stars in an epic final. The 26-year-old Harper endured patchy form this past season although he did reel off three consecutive half-centuries to underline his destructive capabilities.

Rodri salary: How much does Ballon d'Or winner earn per week and annually at Manchester City?

Everything you need to know about Rodri's salary at Manchester City

Having joined from La Liga side Atletico Madrid, Rodri made his Premier League debut with Manchester City in 2019. The Spanish midfielder quickly proved to be the perfect fit for Pep Guardiola’s demanding footballing system, seamlessly taking on the defensive midfield role.

Now an indispensable member of the squad, Rodri helped lead City to four consecutive Premier League titles between 2021 and 2024, including a historic treble in the 2022-23 season. He famously scored the only goal in the Champions League final against Inter Milan, securing the club’s first-ever Champions League title.

In 2024, Rodri also won the prestigious Ballon d’Or, following a standout year in which he played a key role in City’s league success and Spain’s triumph at the 2024 Euros.

Sidelined with an unfortunate ACL injury for most of the 2024-25 season, Rodri’s absence has been deeply felt, with City crashing out of the Champions League and losing the Premier League title to Liverpool by a wide margin.

Rodri’s current contract with City runs until 2027, and while he is not among the top earners, he still receives a significant salary.
Exactly how much does he earn?

Earlier this season, Tottenham boss Postecoglou claimed that he always wins trophies in his second season, and the Australian proved himself right as the Lilywhites won their first trophy since 2008. Spurs were able to beat Manchester United 1-0 in the Europa League final at San Mames on Wednesday night via a scruffy first-half goal from Brennan Johnson.

Despite winning the Europa League, Spurs' 2024-25 season will go down as one of their worst in recent history as Postecoglou's side are set to finish 15th in the Premier League, at best. They are currently only one spot off the relegation zone with just 38 points in 37 games. Throughout the season, questions have been raised about whether Postecoglou should be sacked by Tottenham, however, it is now unlikely to happen. Additionally, the Australian has opened up that he wants to stay with the Lilywhites past this summer.

AFPWHAT POSTECOGLOU SAID

Speaking to the media, Postecoglou said: "I’ve had such a laser focus on winning this. Whatever happens, happens. We are still building this team, it is still very young, we need to add experience.

"My thought process has been trying to build a team that can be successful for a long time, but I am manager, it is not in my hands but it doesn’t affect me, if it did you would have seen it.

"I want to stay, I haven’t completed a job yet, but the moment I accepted the role I had one thing in my head and that was to win something, I want to build on it."

WHAT NEXT FOR POSTECOGLOU?

Tottenham could still avoid the disappointing label of the last-placed non-relegated side this season in the Premier League if they manage to beat Brighton in their last game of the campaign on May 25. However, it will also depend on Manchester United, West Ham or Wolves not winning their final games.
