Rangers fans react to Billy Gilmour’s PL debut

Rangers fans have taken to Twitter to react after their former academy starlet Billy Gilmour made his Premier League debut for Chelsea.

The 18-year-old shone for the Blues in their recent 2-0 win over Liverpool in the FA Cup, which earned him a first ever Premier League start as Frank Lampard plunged him in at the deep end against Everton.

Impressively, the teenager emerged from the game with the Man of the Match award tucked safely under his arm following an excellent performance against Carlo Ancelotti’s men.

Gilmour completed more passes than any other player with 80 to his name – registering a completion rate of 91.3%.

Additionally, he made one key pass and completed two out of three long balls against the Toffees, in what was an extremely composed performance from the youngest player on the pitch.

Rangers failed to agree a professional contract with the Scottish youngster, before he left for Chelsea in a deal worth £500k – we presume that the Gers are regretting that fact each and every day.

Let’s see how the Rangers fans on Twitter reacted to his Premier League debut…

To kick off the reaction, two supporters said that Gilmour would probably still be struggling to make it into the Rangers first-team had he stayed, expressing concern over their side’s ability to integrate youngsters.

In fairness to Steven Gerrard’s side, they do seem to have learned from this slip-up by tying Leon King – who was attracting interest from Tottenham, Manchester City and RB Leipzig – down to a professional contract recently.

Elsewhere, two other fans waxed lyrical over the teenager, with one saying that Gilmour reminds them of Barry Ferguson.

A football legend: Can you get over 80% on this Gazza quiz? Find out now…

The former Rangers star – who eventually left for Blackburn in a deal worth £7.5m – went on to captain the club after breaking through the academy, and also earned 46 caps for Scotland.

In other news, this journalist has slammed a Rangers player who’s been “below the standard expected”…

Three English Premier League players vying for a place at Euro 2016

After the 6-0 victory over San Marino at the weekend, England became the first side to gain qualification from the groups for next summer’s European Championships in France.

However, unless there are a number of changes made to the current Three Lions squad, then we have no chance of making any kind of challenge at the finals.

The squad is the most average it has been in years. There is barely any width, no excitement and minimal creativity. Certainly nothing for any of our rivals to fear. It is a true reflection of the tactics and style of manager Roy Hodgson.

So here are three players Hodgson should be looking at in a bid to improve the squad ahead of the tournament next summer…

Nathan Redmond – Norwich – Midfielder

Currently the England side is lacking natural wide men. Raheem Sterling and Alex Oxlade Chamberlain are the only suitable players, and it’s clear England need a plan B.

Redmond is that unknown talent that opponents won’t be able to handle.

Since breaking through into the Birmingham City first team at the age of 17, the midfielder has rapidly progressed to become one of England’s hottest prospects.

He is a rapid attacking midfielder with a big bag of skills that can cause a nightmare for any defender, and has fast become a vital member of the first team at Carrow Road.

Hodgson would be daft not to consider the talented youngster next summer.

Callum Wilson – Bournemouth – Forward

There is no replacing Wayne Rooney as England’s main striker, but there are a number of question marks about his backups.

Daniel Sturridge should be a certainty as long as he can stay fit, but there are some doubts about the form of Jamie Vardy and Harry Kane.

Wilson provides something different. He is the pacy striker that is always looking to play off the shoulder of the last defender. England don’t have that option with Rooney because he prefers to come deep.

The Bournemouth front man has a great eye for goal and last season scored 27 goals when helping Bournemouth reach the Premier League.

The striker seems to have adapted to life in the top flight quickly and has already registered a hat-trick in the Cherries’ 4-3 victory at West Ham.

At 22 the striker is still improving as a player, and has his eyes firmly set on earning a place in Roy Hodgson’s thoughts this season.

Wilfred Zaha – Crystal Palace – Midfielder

The young winger has come on leaps and bounds since he managed to end his Manchester United nightmare.

Alan Pardew has worked wonders at Palace and has got his side playing very well. Zaha is one of the vital members of Pardew’s plans and all the minutes he is getting under his belt will only improve the talented midfielder.

Zaha has all the qualities to be a game changer. The raw pace mixed with his impressive skills make him a nightmare for defenders to handle. They can’t deal with his unpredictable nature.

He would give the England squad an alternative to the likes of Raheem Sterling and Ross Barkley, and is the perfect player to bring off the bench for impact when opponents start to tire.

Zaha is just the excitement that the Three Lions need right now.

The brilliantly simple solution to all of Chelsea and Arsenal’s woes

It can hardly be said that Arsenal are a club in crisis. Presently joint top of the Premier League and finding a consistency to their patented brand of wonderful attacking fare that has seen them wipe the floor with Leicester away and demolish Manchester United in recent weeks things are relatively upbeat at the Emirates this season.

Yet with Arsene Wenger’s disastrous tinkering in Europe and Tuesday’s 3-0 collapse to Sheffield Wednesday in the Capital One Cup there remains audible voices of discontent among Gooners who firmly believe Le Prof’s best days lie behind him.

Chelsea meanwhile are in crisis. They are so firmly entrenched in crisis they’ve met crisis’ mother-in-law. Languishing in 15th, their title defence in ruins, and putting in performances that are not even a poor imitation of what we witnessed last term it has been a collapse of identity and belief that nobody could have foresaw.

From the opening whistle parp of the 2015/16 campaign Jose the Special One has gone from cock-sure to brooding to spraying blame anywhere but on his own shiny Guccis to being outright miserable while his players have looked leggy and all played out. Changes are certainly afoot.

So without namechecking Pep or Simeone – neither of whom are coming to either club anytime soon – what is the solution? Well, it’s staring us all right in the face, but prepare to mega-lolz because though the answer is brilliantly simple and entirely logical it is equally ludicrous and, well, just never going to happen.

The best possible future for Arsenal and Chelsea requires Wenger and Mourinho to exchange hot-seats in a good old-fashioned straight swap.

There, I said it. Would you like me to play some Madness for you until the laughing subsides?

Yet if you think about it the switch makes perfect sense.

Mourinho’s martinet rule at the Bridge may have driven his side to a title but at what cost? By refusing to rotate he has horsewhipped them into mental and physical exhaustion and this has evidently affected his relationship with Hazard and co in recent months with some even suggesting they are sabotaging results to see their taskmaster gone.

These players would welcome the arrival of Wenger with tired open arms and relish their newly-given licence to express themselves and enjoy their football once more. And a team that includes Hazard, Willian and Oscar enjoying their football equates to a team that rapidly climbs the table. We can also assume Fabregas would be employed in the most effective manner and delight in playing under his former mentor. In Costa, meanwhile, Arsene would finally have the uber number 9 he has always craved but shied away from committing to.

Over at the Emirates it’s been said since time memorial that the Gunners are an extravagantly gifted side that lacks a backbone. Mourinho would certainly give them that and at a stroke provide answers to the most intriguing hypothetical of English football in eons – just how good would Arsenal be if they had a steely spine?

Sure the exuberant stylish football would be curtailed somewhat – regimented into Mourinho’s athletic modus operandi – but most Gooners would take the sacrifice if it meant them lifting aloft the Premier League crown for the first time in twelve years.

As for Chelsea we can safely presume Roman Abramovich would be stroking his beard with Bond-villain satisfaction at the Barca-lite stuff Wenger would introduce. He might even give him two seasons without silverware.

It doesn’t end there. As Maude Flanders used to advocate; shouldn’t we also think of the children? Arsene uncharacteristically criticised his new crop of kids this week, claiming they’re nowhere good enough for the first team yet. Whereas Chelsea is jam-packed with promising youth all primed and ready to explode onto the big stage. The sole reason the likes of Da Silva, Baker, Loftus-Cheek, Brown and Solanke haven’t yet announced their arrival is directly due to one man’s distrust of unproven talent – Jose.

Wenger, however, would be in his element; bringing through a batch of future internationals and maximising what they have to offer.

Mourinho at Arsenal would have no such concerns – the Arsenal pups aren’t good enough anyway. A swapping of offices across London would additionally bring all kinds of juicy headlines, particularly after Jose discovers the telescope aimed at the Bridge proving his theory of voyeurism entirely correct.

Wenger, meanwhile, would immediately have to take his own image from the dartboard hanging from the door that recently boasted Jose’s name.

But now we’re entering the realms of the silly. In purely footballing terms, right now Arsenal could benefit from a coach such as Mourinho and Chelsea would prosper most under a Wenger figure.

So why won’t this happen? Because, as stated, the notion is ludicrous. And yet it makes so much sense.

Fantasy Premier League captain choices ahead of Gameweek 17

16 games have been played in the English top flight, and we are coming down to the half-way point of the campaign and this means a flurry of Premier League games during the festive December period.

While the other leagues around Europe are having their usual winter break, for some reason the FA love to play their games during the holidays. The players may be disappointed, but the fans certainly aren’t.

And with this comes the usual panicking of Fantasy Premier League decisions one has to make before each gameweek, so a good start to the festive December schedule will be extremely vital in your rise or fall in your respective mini leagues.

But probably the biggest decision of all is the player captaincy, as doubling your points on one player could be a big difference between you finishing the first half of the season well, or fighting for relegation like Chelsea.

Here are FIVE Fantasy Premier League Captain Choices ahead of Gameweek 17.

Romelu Lukaku

Last week Romelu Lukaku (9.2) was our first pick for the captaincy role, and he didn’t disappoint scoring the only goal and collecting all three bonus points in Everton’s 1-1 draw against Norwich last weekend.

And we are backing the Belgium international to add to his six-game goalscoring streak when they host league leaders Leicester City this weekend, as although the Foxes are in red-hot form, they’ve only kept three clean sheets the entire campaign and star Leicester centre-back Robert Huth is also suspended for the fixture.

Riyad Mahrez

Meanwhile, Leicester City’s Riyad Mahrez (6.9) has been arguably been the best player in the English top flight this season, scoring an incredible 11 goals and supplying seven assists thus far.

And last week against Chelsea, the Algerian scored and assisted another in a 2-1 victory, rewarding those brave enough to captain him against the champions.

Everton are up next, but like the Foxes themselves, the Toffees have found it difficult to keep it tight at the back, with only one clean sheet in their last ten games.

Jamie Vardy

Jamie Vardy (7.6) is the other Leicester City player that can be considered the Premier League’s best this term, with the Englishman already scoring 15 goals in just 17 league games thus far.

Even when he didn’t score, he supplied an assist in the Foxes’ 3-0 win over Swansea City, making him the most consistent performer in the side.

And as mentioned earlier, Everton don’t keep many clean sheets, meaning Vardy will have amble opportunity to find the back of the net this weekend.

Olivier Giroud

Another striker that is in red-hot form is Arsenal star Olivier Giroud (9.0), as the Frenchman not only scored a hattrick to take Arsenal into the next stages of the Champions League, but has been extremely consistent in the English top flight with nine goals despite his limited playing time earlier in the season.

Manchester City are up next at the Emirates, but you wouldn’t back against Giroud scoring past the Citizens after he did so at the Etihad last season as well as in the Community Shield in the summer of 2014.

A bit of a punt, but could very well pay-off against a City side that have conceded eight goals in their last four games.

Georginio Wijnaldum

A Newcastle United player as captain? Why not.

Georginio Wijnaldum (7.0) has undoubtedly been one of the best players for Newcastle this term, scoring seven goals and supplying three assists in his maiden season.

And the Magpies seemed to have turned the corner lately, beating Liverpool and Tottenham in their last two games with Wijnaldum playing a major part against the Reds with a goal and an assist.

Bottom side Aston Villa are up next at St. James’ Park and if the Magpies can continue their great form, Wijnaldum is expected to be amongst the points.

Aston Villa fans appear to have lost all hope of a revival this season

Aston Villa fans haven’t had anything to shout about since August, when they kicked off the new Premier League season with a win over newly promoted Bournemouth.

Since then it’s been a complete and utter shambles at Villa Park. They haven’t won a league game since and they’re now rock bottom with just six points on the board and a huge eight points from safety.

Tim Sherwood got the axe and was replaced by Remi Garde, but the Frenchman is yet to have found a way to stop the rot at the midlands club.

As I write this Villa are already 1-0 down to Arsenal, courtesy of an Olivier Giroud penalty, but it was before the game that Villa fans appeared to have lost all hope of a revival this season. And I suppose you can’t blame them – a club has never stayed up after having just six points at this stage of a season.

And Villa fans on Twitter appeared to have given up on Twitter before the game had even started…

Twitter reacts as Liverpool & Norwich produce Game of the Season… and one guy called it!

Over the last few weeks, fans of English football have been treated to some rather incredible matches.

The third round of the FA Cup lived up to it’s typically dramatic billing, whilst the last two Premier League matchdays have produced four six-goal thrillers.

But today’s affair at Carrow Road, featuring Norwich City and Liverpool, eclipsed all those aforementioned games and any match we’ve seen so far this season as the ball hit the back of the onion bag a whopping nine times.

Yet, the contest was even more special than the 5-4 scoreline in the Reds’ favour might initially suggest, as the lead and momentum relentlessly swung throughout the 90 minutes.

Liverpool took the lead early on, only to find themselves 2-1 down at half time and 3-1 down soon after the restart, courtesy of a Dieumerci Mbokani backheel, a Steven Naismith debut goal and a Wes Hoolahan penalty.

But the Reds hit back and drew level at 3-3 just twenty minutes later, only for James Milner to go one step further and reclaim the lead after latching onto a terrible backpass from Russell Martin.

Following a rather quiet next 15 minutes, centre-back Sebastian Bassong popped up on the edge of the box in stoppage time to squeeze a slow swerver past Simon Mignolet. with the scores now at 4-4, it seemed both sides would call a truce and walk away with a well-deserved point-a-piece.

With the scores now at 4-4, it seemed both sides would call a truce and walk away with a well-deserved point-a-piece. But substitute Adam Lallana clearly had other ideas and with literally the last kick of the game, unleashed a volley into the ground that looped over Norwich’s Declan Rudd.

As the Liverpool players went to celebrate their fifth goal of the afternoon with manager Jurgen Klopp, referee Lee Mason blew the final whistle.

Needless to say, the incredible match has whipped Twitter into an absolute frenzy. Here are some of the best reactions:

Perhaps most incredibly of all, one fan actually called it BEFORE the game! Hero…

Forget the praise, Spurs’ boss really let himself down at West Ham

One wanted to slap him really.

After the defeat against West Ham last Wednesday, the manager that actually deserves some admiration went down in some people’s estimations. Although passionate about football and his team he certainly is, pathetic in defeat he is as well.

So, you could have gone top of the Premier League, you could have kicked on while your deadliest rivals lost at home on the other side of London, but you didn’t win, you didn’t go top, so show some magnanimous spirit and tell the world that your team weren’t very good that night.

What did we actually get? We got the easy way out – it was everyone else’s fault.

Talking to Sky Sports, Mauricio Pochettino said: “Always it is difficult, it was a game that was more physical than others, in the way that they play, always this long ball, and they try to fight in every action, and they are very strong. For us it was difficult for the way that we want to play, and the pitch doesn’t help us. But I think in the second half we had more freedom, played better and created chances.”

What a shame, poor old Tottenham. The other team, that are meant to roll over and let them play their game didn’t do that, so they’re in the wrong. What else was there? West Ham were more physical. Urm… it’s a football match. The thinking there would be that that is the point of the game. Get stuck in, win the ball and win your aerial battles. Maybe he was expecting a tea party?

Next from the whinging Spurs boss came the long ball. There may have been the odd direct ball, but the Sam Allardyce days are long gone, and so to that style of play. Is Pochettino admitting that his over-payed and possibly over-rated players can’t deal with a ball being played in a different way now and again?

West Ham apparently tried to fight in every action. It’s a London derby and both teams want the points. Gentlemanly conduct and ‘after you please’ doesn’t enter into this. You have to admit that it comes to something when an Argentine says it was too rough. Then there was the pitch. Narrowed a bit maybe, but it’s not there to help you, it’s there to help the home team – deal with it.

Funnily enough Pochettino ended the interview by saying: “Now it’s impossible to blame or complain about this game, we must find a solution and be ready to play again.”

But you did complain and blame. That’s all you did. Why not give the opposition some credit and take the responsibility as your team lost. Blame yourself and blame your team – it’s no one else’s fault.

Appointed as head coach in May, 2014, Pochettino built his coaching reputation in Spain with Espanyol before making his mark in the Premier League during an 18-month spell with Southampton. He is highly admired within the game and his name has been associated with some big, big clubs of late.

With Dortmund this week in Europa League action, let’s hope the Germans aren’t too rough and let Spurs play just how they want. Also we’d better make sure that the pitch isn’t too soft, it isn’t too hard, but that it’s just right.

Win humbly, lose graciously and stop moaning and whinging, Mauricio!

Liverpool rock under investigation – Twitter hits top mocking form

With a Europa League semi-final approaching – and a slim chance of a top four finish – the last thing Liverpool needed was any investigations, controversy or general bad press. Unfortunately, Sakho clearly didn’t get that memo and the Liverpool defensive rock is now under investigation for a failed drugs test – as reported here.

Apparently it was a fat-burning pill – similar to those that saw Kolo Toure banned – that concerned the drugs testing folks and this was naturally absolute gold for the social media teams across the football twittersphere.

Of course, Paddy Power didn’t take long to get in on the act.

Liverpool fans – with no evidence at all – have decided that he has done nothing wrong… Mmm.

He’s notoriously scary and big Sakho will surely have some words for his ‘team’.

Think a fair few of Liverpool’s centre-halves would be in trouble if that was an official UEFA test.

There’s definitely something not quite right about those eyes. Almost a bit Pierluigi Collina!

Man United edging closer to ground breaking deal, talks set for Tuesday

Fresh from their FA Cup success, the Manchester United fans in the Transfer Tavern have been handed another major boost. Delight has erupted in our famous four walls.

That’s because, according to Duncan Castles at ONE World Sports, Jose Mourinho will discuss a three-year deal to takeover at the club on Tuesday,

The Portuguese has been strongly linked with a move to Old Trafford for a number of months, though speculation has ramped up recently after the FA Cup final win over Crystal Palace.

It is claimed the 53-year old will meet with Ed Woodward early next week to run through a contract to replace Louis van Gaal, who will reportedly be relieved of his duties.

Though the Dutchman secured the first major piece of silverware since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson, he has largely proved unpopular during his two year reign in charge of the Red Devils.

Mourinho has also been linked with jobs at Paris Saint-Germain, Everton and Real Madrid, though is thoughtto have been holding out for the post at the Theatre of Dreams.

Long-term assistant Rui Faria is understood to be on the verge of joining him, as well as goalkeeping coach Silvino Louro, meaning there will be more changes to the backroom staff.

Will Mourinho win a title with Manchester United?

Five targets Liverpool should keep an eye on at EURO 2016

Time to move on from the Europa League heartbreak, Liverpool fans.

Life does go on and so does football. EURO 2016 is approaching faster than many would hope and the management teams are clubs around the world will be using it as an opportunity to do a fair bit of summer scouting. So, you fans should too!

Jurgen Klopp will, you’d expect, be given a significant budget to try and ‘Klopp-ify’ their squad and this European Championship might be the opportunity for some players to lure in a bid or ten from Liverpool. Big things are expected from Anfield next summer and this window is a good chance to turn things around, having failed to compete regularly in the top four for several years.

Obviously the club might fancy buying some non-European players, or some from nations who didn’t qualify for the EUROs, but we reckon its a good place to keep an eye on potential signings.

With that in mind, here are FIVE…

Julian Weigl

Dortmund’s midfielder, Julian Weigl, was a slight surprise when he was included in Germany’s preliminary squad for the EUROs.

Weigl is a deep-lying midfield controller and would be the ideal player to function alongside Emre Can or Jordan Henderson. This season he surpassed the record for number of touches in a Bundesliga game and has been averaging over 78 passes per league game.

He is certainly one to watch and could be subject to some hefty bids from around Europe.

Axel Witsel

Another midfielder, Axel Witsel is more of a left-field selection.

A member of the immensely talented Belgium squad, Witsel will probably play a slightly deeper role in the midfield and shield the defence. Touted as a star from his time at Benfica, Witsel has been a dominant force for Zenit St Petersburg, but it must be time for him to make the next step in his career.

Marc Bartra

Barcelona are that good that signing their ‘rejects’ are still a decent ploy for Premier League sides.

With Pique and Ramos fully fit, Bartra is unlikely to feature much at the EUROs, but the Spanish centre-half would be a sound addition for the Reds. An adept passer, Bartra could spring counter-attacks from deep in Klopp’s side and would reinforce their terribly weak centre-back spot.

[ad_pod id=’euro-2016′ align=’center’]

Lassana Diarra

The former Arsenal and Chelsea defensive midfielder made it into the France squad ahead of Manchester United’s Morgan Schneiderlin and his recent form has suggested that he could be set for another go at the big time.

Less of a passing machine than Weigl, Diarra is a shielding player in midfield and can also fill in at right-back if required. A terrier, more than a composed controller, he would aid the pressing game in Liverpool’s midfield.

[ad_pod id=’euro-2016′ align=’center’]

Lorenzo Insigne

It was a ‘so close, yet so far’ season for Napoli, as they fell just short of the Scudetto they have craved for years.

Lorenzo Insigne was pivotal in the side from Naples even getting that close as his partnership with Gonzalo Higuain terrorised defences. The Italian will likely be a starter at this summer’s EUROs, so expect to see a mix of sharp feet and trickery from the wings.

12 goals and 10 assists in Serie A this season show that Insigne is developing an end product to his game and he could be a real force in this Liverpool attack.
